  1. Welcome to the forum Grayson. A snowman rig might catch a larger carp if you had small and large carp together in an area. If you are just getting started catching carp you will have much better luck using sweet corn or boiled field corn(maize) on a hair rig. Chumming the area you fish and using some type of packbait or method mix will really help also.

I have never fished Old Hickory but I think I can give you a couple of spots to try. The Old Hickory Beach Recreation Area which is near the dam, would be a place that I would try. If you do not see any carp along the bank while you are fishing there you may have to fish a deeper water area. I have had some good catches fishing below dams in east TN. During the summer you can reach some deep water by fishing the lockside below Old Hickory Dam. The channel where barges travel to move through the locks should be about 20 feet deep. Good luck!

  2. Brad, I ordered the book Carp on the Fly from BPS about a month ago. I have not received it yet. When it gets here... I can let you borrow it for a couple of weeks. When I first ordered the book it was out of stock, but it is supposed to be available now and I should get my copy any day now. I will be learning how to catch carp on the fly this spring. I have only caught panfish on my flyrod so far.

  3. [i met up with Brad and Mike at beautiful Chilhowee lake to do some daytime carping this morning. This spot is only accessible during the daytime. We may have gotten some bites here but no runs. We checked the water temperature and it was in the 50's. the air temperatures was already in the upper 80's. The water temperature here varies with the amount of water released from the upstream dam. Today it was just too cold.attachment=26602:[Aug_9__Small_.JPG]

We decided to move to another place that is mostly limited to daytime fishing. We moved to a city park lake where I have had some luck recently. I hoped the pond experts(Brad and Mike) could help me find out whether there were any large carp there. It is a fair sized pond of at least 6 arces but the maximum depth is only about 12 feet. The water temperature today is in the 90's. We started fishing the pond about 3 pm when the air temp had reached the high for the day of 96. At least we had a bit of shade from a tree.

I knew there were several carp below 10 pounds here. With 6 rods in the water how much could we learn? Well, in about 4 hours we learned 2 things: 1) There is at least 1 common carp over 10lbs in the pond.(I caught a new pond record :D of 12lbs 7oz on juicy tutti fruity maize)attachment=26603:aug_9_a__Small_.JPG]

    2) There is at least one grass carp in the pond. Brad caught his new PB grass carp of 23lb 2oz. We got it back in the water quickly and I believe it will be fine.post-1716-1186719314.jpg

We landed 3 commons and would have had some more but for Brad's bad luck with a hook pull at the bank and a mysterious break in his line.

Mike landed a common and a channel cat.post-1716-1186719581.jpg

Overall we had a hot but successful and fun day.post-1716-1186719795.jpg

  4. It's great to see you doing so well Bri. Hope your luck continues. I would like to come down and fishing with you when the temps drop a bit in the fall.

I have started fishing with Brad up here in our area. Hope the Alcoa gang and I can post some pictures in a few days.

  5. Good job Bri. Thanks for sharing your success. I am having the same problems here. Some spots I wanted to try here have been screwed up by new construction(no longer have access). I have ordered a smart cast to help me and can't wait for it to arrive. Great job with the self timer :D Hope that spot continues to pay off for you.

  6. If you know of any restaurants or snack bars on the water you can probably find some freeloading carp. There is a floating snack bar at a local marina that attracts carp and sunfish looking for a handout. This snack bar is only open about 6 months of the year and the carp show up every summer. Today I fed them some corn pops and some teenagers threw them some popcorn chicken. They will eat that too! I could not get them to take a corn pop out of my hand though. The largest carp among these today may have been 19 or 20 pounds. There is no fishing from this dock at the snack bar. The best way to catch some of these is probably from a boat when the marina is not too busy. Enjoy these pictures.
