  1. If you do a Google image search, you'll run across a website dedicated to getting overseas soldiers into fly fishing that has some pics of mangar. So I assume they can be caught on some sort of fly.

They are a really cool looking fish, kind of a cross between a barbel and a bowfin. I bet they fight hard.

  2. Yep then that's it. It bothered me all summer long that people at the lake were constantly calling them "buffalo" as I knew better. I eventually got tired of arguing (gently) with them. It must be a colloquial thing--I just moved here from upstate last year.

Do you know if these are some kind of hybrid?

  3. I caught several of those last year at a local (pay) lake and had no idea what they were. They looked exactly like the one in the first post and were all around the same size. This lake definitely has goldfish in it, so it makes sense now that I know.

Also, I caught tons of very very dark brown carp (almost black), all around 3-4 pounds. They look exactly like bigger carp, but much darker. The locals around here call them "buffalos", but they are obviously not since they have the full barbels and the stiff serrated spine on the dorsal and anal fins. Anyone have any insight into these? Maybe the carp in this lake just tend to go through a very dark phase in that size range as all the bigger carp were quite pale as you can see in my avatar. I wish I had pics of them...

  4. Great poem! If the posts on this forum are of any indication to the general quality of the people of the CAG, then I will be joining very soon. Heck, one day I wish I live in MI, the next I wish I live in TX, then Tennessee, etc. Today I wish I lived in Georgia, and looking at your profile only sealed the deal. Thanks for today's laugh! :D

  5. Nice cats! I fish for carp in a lake that has some big flatties and blues in it, but I've never tried catching them. I saw so many big ones caught this year that I have set a goal for next year to try to tie into one of these behemoths. I think I'll keep one pole for cats and fish carp with the other pole. Congrats on your catches. :D

Hometown: grew up in Connersville, IN, but now reside in Springfield, IL

    Favorite Waters: Leisure Lakes

Favorite Fishing Moment(s): an overnight fishing trip with my cousin when I was a teen; we lost two big carp, one of which stole his pole! The seeds were planted that night. :D

Rod Of Choice: 7ft. medium-heavy Bass Pro Bionic Blades (1 spinning and 1 casting)

Reel of Choice: Quantum baitcaster and Okuma Avenger baitfeeder (my one and only piece of "Euro" gear...so far)

Line Of Choice: 14lb Trilene XL

    Favorite Hook: Gamakatsu #4 baitholder

Favorite bait: Doughballs and sweet corn

Favorite pack: Haven't gotten that far yet

    Biggest Carp: 14lb.7oz.;

Dream fishing trip: Any of the Michigan gems (Ford, Kent, Saline, etc.) and Lake Austin & Town Lake in Texas. As far as closer to home, I want to hit up Lake Storey and Miller Park (Bloomington, IL)...basically anywhere with BIG carp (to me, that means 20 lbs and up). I would also love to take a pay lake tour of the South, since paylakes are where I feel most comfortable right now...

Favorite Food?: Anything good and Italian

  7. Thanks for the tips Paul! I am a beginner who just moved here (S'field) from northern IL this past winter, so I have been wondering if Sangchris and Lake Springfield had any good carp fishing. I will definitely give it a try in the near future.

  8. I've actually caught more of those things in my life than carp! Used to fish the backwaters of the Mississippi River for bass and we would quite frequently get those. They break your line a lot because of their teeth. Also caught a bunch in Florida on the St. John's River bass fishing. They love live shiners! Unfortunately, while I was in Florida, I fished with a guide who would bludgeon to death every "mudfish" that he caught. :D

    Fun fish and nice catch!

  9. Central IL also here. I believe they are spawning in my usual venue (Leisure Lakes). The bite seems to have just about completely died out other than a few short periods throughout the day. Throughout April and early May, I was getting action just about as soon as my bait hit the water, all day long. Not so now...

I was out today and saw a lot of "tailing" fish, which might be a sign of the spawn from what I'm told.
