  1. the problem with a term crucian carp in England is that they only have carrasius carrasius in their waters, they are relatively unique in appearance and not known to mix with carp and produce hybrids

in the rest of the Europe not that long ago they introduced Carassius Giebelio which totally devastated the old golden crucians and actually started mixing with carp to produce hybrids and I think thats what we have here in US/Canada

when I was little we used to catch a lot of golden crucians but in late 80 early 90 you could only catch silver cruicans

you had to find small isolated waters which never got stocked or flooded from local rivers to find a golden one

it became very rare species and now silver crucians are like a bluegills here in US, very hard to find a place without a million of them around

Excellent and informative post. I've caught a few hybrids, mostly back in Illinois, but I did get this bigger one in Texas.

This one did have barbels but they were extremely stunted. It's the only "mutt" I know of out of this extremely popular little pond.

I always assumed they were just goldfish hybrids but perhaps not.

  2. Good job guys, congrats on the ghostie and the big un.

I'm probably gonna head out there sometime this week and see if I can coax out a gold bar or two. Last time there the turtles made it impossible but that's been 3 or 4 weeks ago now.

EDIT: Joe's ghostie is a recapture. Here it is almost three years ago when it was caught by Crago at exactly one pound less. Hooray for CPR!

  3. "Two things anyone can use - Effort, Energy & Eyes..." Ha, ha Good old Nashy!

Just wish he had a more interesting voice... half the audience were nodding off.

Heh, that's what I've always thought about him judging from the DVD's. The man obviously knows his stuff and has a lot of good info to share but he sounds like Prince Valium after a few minutes.

  4. That's the place.

The city bought the property and now it's called Connor Nature Park, with a trail that goes around and by the river as well as Smallies pond.

Saw some big grassies in there too, but haven't caught one yet.

That is great to hear. I always thought it was a shame that that place was just sitting unused for so long. My grandfather used to take me fishing there a lot when I was a kid, I have some good memories of Smallies. It was such a different kind of place...you will never find water that clear anywhere else in the Whitewater Valley area and it seemed so ancient and mysterious to me as a child, like there had to be some monsters hiding in those depths.

Looks like next time I'm in town I will be buying a temp fishing license!

  5. Some great fish there, congrats on that 30!

A couple of weeks ago when you guys posted that video from Lake Lemon I mentioned that Indiana is my home state. Imagine my surprise when I saw this thread as Connersville is my home town!

Can you tell me where you all were fishing? I can't figure out where it was from the video. There is an old lake on the south edge of town that was called Smallie's that it kind of looks like but as far as I know, that place has been closed for 20 years. But the bank behind you guys doesn't look like it though it has been 25 years since I've been there.

Very curious here! PM me if you'd rather not broadcast the location.

  6. Yeah that pond has a reputation of being a very difficult swim at times, it was quite a surprise for me to get a run literally 30 seconds after my method ball hitting the water. It was a great sign and the action continued on pretty strong through the evening.

A lot of people in DFW HATE this pond as they've fished it 6 or 8 or 10 times without a single run. Chris used to be one of those guys. His 30 here is the very first carp he's ever caught here!

Congrats Chris on the very rare DFW 30!!

  7. Thoroughly awesome story Andy! Yes that whole stretch of bank is mayhem when the weather is nice on a weekend. I had a dog pee on my Walmart bag with my oats etc. in it. Also heard something beside me and looked down to see a big dog tearing an entire loaf of bread apart (i.e. my bait). AND I also had the pleasure of almost getting spooled by a dog too. And Steve got spooled by the rowing team. All of this was in ONE day...never a dull moment at the dog park. lol

But I was waiting for a picture of Skiff Girl. :toot: That area is known for having some of the best carping "scenery" in all of Texas. :D

And congrats to you and your brother on your big fishes!
