  1. You know what would be cool? If the top UK match anglers had a tournament with top USA paylakers. If the tournament was held in a UK match lake, I think the UK match anglers would win but if held in a USA paylake, I think the Americans would win.

But who'd win in a virgin water? That would be a good competition because UK match angling and American paylaking are so similar in that they both try to "catch them all."

  2. While fishing a local lake & waiting for some action, I saw two mink pups feeding along the shoreline in front of me. I had just landed a few carp & their slime was heavy on my landing net that was laying near the water. One of the pups got into the net & I guess the odor of the carp attracted him. I guess he thought he was going to get a meal or maybe just having fun. He bit & tugged on the netting & I thought he would tear it up but after much effort no damage was done. I asked him what he was doing but he looked at me like I was the intruder. He stayed for a while & I had a good laugh watching him.

Lol that's funny and great footage.

    Duck, Duck, Buffalo?

Because there's a first time for everything

It was the day after ATC2013 and I woke up extra early to take advantage of....

Wow that's really odd how the duck got hooked. I've seen ducks diving in before but never thought that could actually happen lol. And great looking buffalo!

  3. First, the "embarassing" story. My first, and all-time best fishing buddy (we began fishing together nearly 60 years ago when we were just 9 years old) missed several days of school early one spring. It seems he had been fishing with his dad on opening day of trout season, when suddenly "nature called". Despite the fairly large crowds of other fishermen, he found that he just couldn't put it off, so he made his way deep into some thick bushes to take care of the situation. Unfortunately for him -- as he discovered the next day -- the leaves he used for cleaning up were from the poison ivy vines that covered the bushes of the only secluded spot he could find. OOPS!!! Needless to say, he put up with quite a bit of good-natured ribbing for some time afterwards.

Geez that's crazy lol. Can't imagine how that felt....couldn't be good though lol.

  4. 3 years ago I was flathead fishing with my buddy paul. The area we were fishing was a small river near Philadelphia. We got to our spot near a train tressel and anchored around 7pm. We fished until 2am and had some luck. Then I heard something near me by the bridge. I shined my light over and this guy appeared next to the water. I thought maybe hes fishing from 2am to light. So I just continued to watch my rods. Then the guy starts blowing up something?! All we hear is woosh woooosssh woooosshhhh. My friend said to me he must be blowing up something inappropriate. Me and him start laughing hysterically. We couldnt stop and only kept getting louder as we heard each blow. I finally grabbed the flashlight and shined it on the guy and he had no fishing poles and had his back facing us. We still dont know what he was blowing up so we called it a night before this guy killed us.

Note: this river is no more than 35 yards wide. This was not a huge river and that guy was really close.

Good thing you guys left. Gotta be careful out there, especially very late at night...some real lunatics out there.

  5. If no one has a funny story then go fish with dean brookes (Brookesy) to get one. Everytime i fish with him something unbelievably weird happens. We are going to try and do a joint article on our adventures for NACA. The first time we fished together over night we had a woman in a bikini and a chiseled man in speedo's bathing in our margins, a homeless man bivvied up next to us one night while we were sleeping, a couple in a car making whoopie behind our swim and then there was the incident with a naked chinese man on a bicycle....and that was just one session. We also had the bootcamp fitness freaks in the margins at the ATC and the man who decided to spray paint his car next to mine in a local park. I will have to think of some others as i have had some right laughs on the bank over the years waking up with deer in my bivvy, a mate who cast out and hooked his chair throwing it into the lake and my buddys reel breaking so he landed a forty in france by pulling the line in by hand and keeping it tight with his TEETH!

Geez, those stories are crazy lol. I think I need to fish with Brookesy so I can get a funny story because nothing funny ever happens when I go fishing lol.

  6. This is one of those stories that may read funny, but i can assure you that when it happened, I wasn't laughing--- It was the spring of 2012 and ....

    Todd Richer

    Todd,

I enjoyed your story and it was very well written. And you're right, it does read funny but I can imagine that it wasn't funny when it was happening. And man that guy Jim is really bad luck. Hope you don't meet him and his dog again lol.

  7. I am sorry to bring this back up again, but I am not one for the peg draw system where the anglers pick their peg the second day. I like the peg draw system used in 2013 with all the peg draws random. So with the system where you pick your peg the second day, then basically it becomes a one day tournament, say on the first day of the tournament you draw a good peg be random, and you fish it well too, then you are hurt the second day because the other anglers who didn't do so well, pick the good pegs from the results of day one and you are left with a peg that doesn't produce well the second day. also when you are putting fish in to count for your totals you are hurting yourself because that moves you up on the list for 1st place, and so now that allows other anglers to pick better spots than you and you are left with not such a good peg. also you could get a peg that isn't so great but you still produce from it, then on the second day you are left with a bad peg again because you fished the first day well and then both days you have a bad pegs are that could affect your totals . also with the flood and so supposedly how spots that were good aren't producing like they used to, now that gives the people who are traveling to texas a disadvantage because now we don't know what spots are good. I can see why you want the anglers to pick a good peg the second because it gives a chance to catch day but there is no need because you guys said all the pegs are capable of producing big fish. so whatever peg you get you could do well. but if we must change it and decide not to use the peg draw system used in 2013, I would rather have the big 4 or 5 then the system where the angler picks their peg the second day. I don't mean to offend anyone by this I am saying what I think. one more thing, with the random peg draw its the fairest way, it give an advantage to no one because it is all luck, then it becomes a challenge to see how good of anglers people are, and that's what a tournament means to me, is showing your skills.

I like your reasoning Brrendan! And I hope you guys kick butt again this year! :yourock:

  8. This is an interesting thread. One of my goals before I die is to fish Town Lake (or LBL as it's called now) and capture and hold one of those beautiful big carp. But as far as peg draw is concerned (not that my opinion matters since I'm not going this year) I favor just leaving it to luck both days. As someone already said, luck is fair to all.

But for those completely against this new proposed idea, you guys seem to be making assumptions, namely:

    1) A peg's production of fish will stay the same day 1 and day 2...meaning a bad peg will stay bad and a good peg will stay good. Is this true? Maybe it is in Town Lake but in big lakes I fish, the healthy nomadic carp move a lot and there's no guarantee they'll be there the next day....especially in the spring.

    2) A peg's result is completely dependent on the swim. Angler's skill and strategy has very little to no effect so a bad swim in day one will stay bad and a good swim in day one will stay good, regardless who's fishing there. Maybe this is true in Town Lake? Could be. Every water is different so I can't say for sure.

But like I said I fancy the idea of leaving the peg draw to luck both days because like someone said, luck is indeed fair to all.

Regardless, I hope everyone has a good time and catches monsters!

  9. I sat here looking at that little flashing bar in the upper left corner of the box for a long time before tapping on the keys. We can argue all day about Mario's post but the fact is on this forum discussions on pack baits have really caused the users of the method to really think about what they were doing. I never saw a discussion on break time for method until challenged by pack bait. I never saw discussions on seasonal changes on method until challenged by pack bait . I never saw discussions on the benefits of having air bubble from your method until pack baits challenged them . I am sure there are other examples as well . So it seems to me that the first difference is that pack baits lead and the method follows.

To a certain extent u are correct because on a personal level packbaits did make me think twice about breakdown times and I'm sure that's true for many American angler as well. But the truth of the matter is that despite what novices are doing like putting flour in their mixes and calling them packbait or method mix doesn't change the fact that both pack and method have always considered breakdown times to be an important variable. Speak to or read any serious UK match angler who uses method and they'll tell u.

I learned the method mix from the old 2005 ACS DVD and even then David Moore and Wayne boon talks about breakdown time and shows footage of it breaking down.

I have heard it often where people say they've seen method users being completely ignorant about breakdown times but to be fair that's not a representation of method mixes. Its just a representation of either a novice or an angler that just doesn't care or ignorant.

Both pack and method mixes arrived at the need for groundmixes to breakdown independently. Believe me the British know about attractants needing to be soluble and groundmixes to disperse in the water column.

  10. Pack is American and method is a British invention. And in Asia there is also a similar concept although I don't know what they call theirs. A method mix is probably more versatile in break down times (can be long or short) and generally can include more ingredients because it can include chopped boilies and all kinds of particles etc. I'm not sure if an American paylaker would even like having chopped boilies or chunks of bait in their packbait. But both can also actually overlap and be almost identical by coincidence.

For example I know that one packbait is fish chow with cream corn. The uk method mix has a similar fish meal mix with comparable breakdown times as the American fishchow packbait. But like dale said, some method mixes though can have infinite breakdown times lol.

But When I'm fishing for bigger fish I actually prefer a longer breakdown time because my rig can be sitting there for many many hours

  11. Congrats to all the winners and I'm glad to see Christian winning in more than one category with that awesome New Year's Day catch!

And frank u have gone way over what was required to keep the FFF event alive...I mean with all the advertising, money, time, and even including 13 really cool collectible medals. I think u should be given some reward for the effort and money u put in. Cag is lucky to have a volunteer like u.

  12. But as far as carp gear goes, my opinion is that I don't think you can go too wrong with rods and pods (unless you get a defective batch) and it's just a matter of preference in terms of specs like test curve, action, tripod vs 4 legged pod, etc.

But in reels and alarms, one can easily go wrong because these really break so I'd look at spending a little more if possible on these 2 items...just my opinion.

  13. For pods I like the goal post set up because it's really stable, especially on flat ground. And I prefer the x or cross shaped base goal posts over a single bar. I can't comment on this particular one because I've never used it but it seems it'll do the job at under $100.

My only complaint though is I don't think this particular model's base extends. Might not be a problem depending on how long you like your rods to rest on the pod.

  14. chumming- caterpult or spod ..? Did lot of search for spod rods but those were heavy for my pocket ..a caterpult should do for my need..?? I found cheap surf rods 12 to 15ft with 2 to 6 oz lure.. i think if it work..? Be best for me these, rods i found were around 30$.... Any pod you can recommend in range of 100 to 150...im not looking for fancy or brand ..but it should be reliable and last for a year atleast... Got few more questions but that be later ....

Thanks in advance Sent from Samsung Galaxy Note

A $30 surf rod will work for spodding but consider how much you'll be using it and what distance because fatigue could become an issue because cheaper surf rods are typically thicker and heavier. If the $30 surf rods are what I'm thinking they are (the thick white ones), then I'd go with a 12 footer because of it's weight. A few ounces on it's own is nothing (like a feather) but add those ounces to a spod rod and cast 100 yards 20-50 times in a row and you'll start to feel it lol. When I first started carp fishing, I was against investing in a dedicated spod rod but now I actually fish with them lol. $100-200 spod rods are actually pretty nice for fishing and spodding because they're relatively light and powerful.

I only use spod rods to handle both fishing and spodding because of the car I currently have....it's really small.

By the way, how do you like your galaxy note? I'm debating on whether I should get an ipad mini or a galaxy note 8?
