  2. My tips for keeping carp happy, healty and ensuring fast growth!

1.Provide the fish with biggest tank possible.

    2.The more filtration the better.

3.50% water change weekly.Twice a week would be better.

4.Feed heavy!Mixed diet of quality flakes and pellets, live, freeze dried plankton/krill.Three times a day!

    5.Another 50% water change!

6.Take it easy with the lighting!Fish are not fond of bright light!

7.No live plants, they will likely become food or die as a result of becoming up rooted by the fishes digging and

will surely not fair well with tip 5.

8.Get a weather loach or three.Carp like weather loach friends and make a great addition to any temperate species

tank. They will also act as a clean up crew!

9.Please,do not use your tank as a testing ground for your baits!People have a real imagination to think that

their captive raised carp in their tiny home aquarium will provide any real feedback as to how a wild fish will

react to their baits. The fact is,almost anything you put to a carp will receive attention in the small confines of

the home aquarium. Its not worth compromising your fishes health and your water quality on account of some

BS pack bait, etc.Test your baits were it matters!

    10.Another 50% water change!

    .

thanks for the tips every one.

    cheers.

    Joel.

  3. have located some nice small carp and decided to start a small tank.

any one that knows there stuff willing to give me any pointers.

hears is the setup so far. It is currently running its cycle. from what i have read on this i am to let the tank cycle for up to 6 weeks but 2 to 3 weeks is good to introduce small numbers of fish like 2 or 3 at a time. im not looking to to make any thing fancy but just want to have a few small carp.

i have treated water and added a few water supplements to help with the nitrogen cycle.

again any help with this is very grateful.

    cheers.

  4. joel,

From the vegetation both on the banks and in the water I'd say right off hand that video is from at least June. That is, if it is in NY. Does it say when and where?

    Phone

i actually shot it when my brother was out last year. i managed to recover this file along with a few more after my hd crashed again awhile back.

it was in August. we had some 5 to 8 spawns last year on just one water. was the nuts to watch.

    Lee,

sorry for the salt in the wound..... not long to go now tho matey.

    cheers.

    Joel.

  5. I thought I'd post a few more pics of the float and a couple fish caught off the technique last summer in NYC. =)

    Resting float:

After the carp takes the bait the float sinks, then we wait for it to go back up (as in this photo) before setting the hook:

    Perfect-sized carp for this technique:

    Pleasant surprise, a goldfish!

    I can't wait for Spring!

A quick question - are there any professional guide services for carp fishing (European-style) near NYC?

I would not say professional guide services , but other anglers im sure would be willing to help you out.

any time your looking to find a few fish shoot me a PM.

tight lines and welcome to the forum.

  6. Guys,

Here in NY, you cannot stock ANY fish in ANY water without a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation permit. However, if you own private water with no outlet, those permits are not hard to get. In public water or waters with an outlet that is connected to a public water, Good luck. They will allow native species (bass, bullhead, minnows, and the trouts) but almost anything else will be denied.

If you want to stock your own pond without getting the permit, that is up to you but you cannot go to a fish retailer and buy the fish without them asking and checking your permit. They are not allowed to sell to you if you don't have a permit.

    Thanks

    Niels

PS. I did the permitting process for a small 2 acre pond with a creek through it. We stocked minnows and 50 small mouth bass. That was pretty easy.

PPS. Joel, if you want those small carp, I can help you. In NY, you can get them at almost any aquarium store. I have seen them in the gold fish tanks here in Rome. Pet's mart has them. And my local stores too. They are really fun to have, but outgrow your tanks so fast. Start with a 55 gallon at least, otherwise you will be switching tanks every year. BTW, locally, there is a guy selling a 450 gallon tank (8x3x3 ft) I would LOVE to have that, but how do you move it? or worse, what if the tank ever fails?? I don't want to see 6 inches of water in the entire livingroom.

    Neils thanks.

i will take a look about.

i have a huge viv from when i had a red tail boa, (snake) so a few agustments, pump gravle, im all set! 95gal tank!!!! with rack stand.

shold work perfect for my lil exsperiment!!mmmwaaaahhahahahah!

  7. you will have to check your local bait stores... i got mine in july and he was about 2 inches long. they sell them around here as catfish bait. the funny thing is eventually they will be in all waters because as i do when crappie fishing when im done i dump the rest in the water im fishing in....lol so you know someday most waters here will have them.

    good job!

i see thousands of them during the summer months after the spawn.

    but not at that size.

    i will look about.

    thanks for the info.

    joel.

  8. Cortland has a line with interchangeable tips. Called Precision Change-a-Tip Fly LIne. A bit pricey at around $99 but comes with line and a floating tip and two sinking tips.

i had seen that but i didn't think it was made to sink quickly more so to drift to the bottom?

i like that it offers changing tips on the main line!

if the fish move up in the water swap them over , of vise-verse

  9. Dave congrats.

    i miss chum mixer fishing.

for the life of me cant find the nice square ones you can get in the UK, i would bung a hand full in a Tupperware box, scald them, and let the moisture do the work. once all the water is soaked up in to the mixers you can put like 3 or 4 on there the perfect casting weight, and soft enough to hook and soft enough to come off on the take to get a perfect hook hold.

just cat find them any where in NY.

first time i ever tried carping on a fly rod was at the Tommy... needless to say it was a bit of a dooo!!! 31lb 6oz what a bloody night mare!

i had only really been to Pulaski on the salmon river and never knew how to cast correctly. but as u know the warden swim is 8ft + at only 6 ft out off the bank!

i now use a 4ft piece of Gardner plummet lead core! the brown one works best for that swim. on to that a 2 foot sea-gar fluro carbon leader of 12lb test to a D rig and a piece of immo corn!

i will post up photos of how i made up the leader and D rig later.

for bite indication i use a commonly used in-line poly floater that a lot of the fly guys use, i painted it black as fluro yellow in gin clear water is not the bestyou can mark the depth then just sli it up till its sitting nicely.

and wait for it to pop under and not come back up you soon know when your connected!

i set my drag almost as loos as it will go and then work it tighter as i palm the spool while playing the fish! would love to get more off the top up there tho! just so hard!

    but it is fun tho!

    grate job,

    Joel.

  10. there is a lake not to far from me where the fish are milling about on the top like that for hours. only had one off the top tho. they are not like the UK top feeders over hear.

takes some time and as soon as you hook up with one the reset just spook out like a bomb had gone off!

see this video before on hear i think.

such a nice fish to have off the top!

    thanks for reposing!

    Joel.
