[Different materials for hair]

Just take your piece braid with the loop tied at one end and put an overhand not at the other end. The length is determined by how long you want the hair. Lay the braid along the hook shank with the overhand knot next to the eye. Hold it in place and tie your knotless knot as you would for a hair rig, except you will trim off the mono that would have been the hair. The hair will be held in place by the coils of the knotless knot and wont slip out due to the overhand knot.

Another option I use for the hair rig is similar and provides a stiffer stronger hair. Take your hook length and tie an overhand knot in the end. Pass the other end through the eye of the hook from the back of the eye to the front. Leave enough line on the knotted end for double the hair length. Bend the hair end back along the shaft of the hook so that the overhand knot is next to the eye. Finish the knotless knot as usual. You will have a tag end of line left in front of the overhand knot trim this off. This will give you a hair rig on which the hair is one long loop. This has some good advantages. The hair is stiffer and stonger than the standard one. The loop that is now your hair has no knot at the end which tends to tear through your bait when you slide your bait off the baiting needle and onto the hair. I hope I have been some help.

A great story of angling skill and knowlegde paying off.

Favourite blank. Which one? There have been more than a few.

I went down to Port Colbourne by myself. It's on Lake Erie where the Welland canal starts. I found a good spot by two large old grain elevators. I baited my chosen swim and set up. While sitting there a mink popped it's head out of the water through some floating weeds about 10 ft away. I soon saw there was three of them, probably momma and her two young. They were so intent on hunting that they paid no attention to me at all. One came within 3 ft behind me as it searched through the rocks.

Later I saw a bird flash by closer to the elevators. It was a perigrine falcon. I watched as it made stoops in an attempt to catch a meal. I saw where it perched and I wondered what triggered it to attack as there were lots of prey around. Pidgeons, starlings, swallows and more. As I watched I saw a pattern. The falcon would wait until birds would fly around the corner of the elevator. They would be met by the wind which would slow them down and distact them as they fought to control their flight. Thats when the falcon would swoop down after them. Even with those tactics I didn't see a successful attack. Twice the falcon tried for barn swallows and they simply out manouvered the falcon. Life's tough even at the top of the food chain .

Earlier on when I was clambering down the rocks to my swim I noticed some different coloured rock in the big limestone blocks. When I inspected this I saw something I always wondered about. I have found some stone artifacts while hunting and fishing. One realy nice arrow head and a hide scaper(which I originally thought was a spear head). I had found the type of stone they were made from. I am not arock hound or a geologist so I don't know the proper name for what they used ( it is not true flint as flint is not found in North America). I managed to break off a chunk of it and I struck a flake off of it. You could quite easily have cleaned a fish with it. I only saw one carp roll on the surface and didn't get a touch on the line. It was a good and memorable day.

Those prey consumption figures are averages. Pike will keep eating till they disgorge ( puke ) and then go after more. I have witnessed this in an aqurium. Not natural I know. They attack out of instinct ( strike response) and so will just keep doing it.

I caught a ten inch pike once and a friend took it home and put it in a 20 gallon aquarium. Underneath the 20 he had a 10 gallon which he kept shiners for it to eat. After just restocking the shiner tank with about 6 or 8 dozen he fed the pike a few. He then got distracted by someone and did not put the lids back on either aquarium. The pike jumped out, hit the back wall and ended up in the minnow tank. The result was the pike killed them all in one day.
