  1. I know Mac, the snagging thing seems barbaric, but they claim that is the only way to catch them since they are filter feeders, and only eat plankton. They heavily regulate them in SD too, and you have to apply for a tag to snag 1 per year, like an Elk tag or something. I hear that the meat is quite tasty. :D

It's worse than barbaric. They snag these fish during their spawning season and use the roe for caviar. I don't get it. Seems like a very foolish, greedy and thoughtless thing to do to a fish facing extinction. :D

Sorry for the rant and getting off topic but when I saw this on TV, I could not believe it. :D

  2. Hi Mike,

if I get a ticket for a flight on my next birthday its okay. Otherwise I must wait still for 2 years. Maybe in 2009 we like to make a trip to Canada and then we will go for 10 days to the U.S. too.

But maybe its expensive if I get my tackle with me :D

If you do come for a visit look us up and we'll help .

  3. It seems that there is such a variation in body types in carp that there is no way to get the weight other than the scale. I saw many carp caught this season from the same waters and there was a lot difference in body shapes.

I used to think that carp grew in stages. They seemed to grow in one dimension at a time. Starting out with a pretty general fish shape then growing more in height than length, then more in length than height etc. Then once they got around the high teens they bulked up.

With the mish mash of genetics we have in our carp including golfish crosses and different waters ie lakes , rivers etc. IMHU There isn't a practical rule or method that will work other than the scale.

  4. Mate, I would prefer both of those to living amongst a bunch of Canadians!!! :D:D:D

Oh and not to mention your very own natural disasters too......Hurricanes, Tornados, Devastating Floods, Tsunamis, Tidal Waves, Rockslides, Approximately 10,100 Forest Fires (annually), Avalanches, Ice Storms.........NEED I GO ON???? :D

In fact I would hazard a guess (Well not a guess, because I know it to be fact!!) that their have been more people killed in Canadian natural disasters than in Californian ones. :D

And having experienced both places I know where I would (And do) prefer to live.

    K :D

LOL Of course since there is nothing natural about California .

And I guess that this diproves that old axiom that experience is a good teacher. :D:D:D

  5. Yeah ...............I used to think like that too!!! :D:D

Not now though, much rather spend a few hours flogging a bit of kit to some facilities director at a hospital than sit freezing my nuts off on the bank..............Been there, done that, fished the Winter Leagues in the North of England for 20+ years............ :D ,

Used to have fun doing it too........You know trudge down a frozen snow covered river bank with all my gear sweating my nuts off, get to the bit of river designated as my peg, spend the best part of an hour throwing out a 24" pipe wrench fixed to a length of heavy chain, attached to a long rope, to break the ice, spend another half an hour clearing out all of the broken ice so I could fish. Sit down for 5 hours fishing, then pack up and trudge down the river bank again....................No thanks mate!! Not on my watch!!

The only thing worth looking forward to sometimes in those days was the thought of a few pints in the boozer after the match. :D

You are welcome to that white stuff, I will get to experience my annual bit of snow by driving an hour upto the mountains this winter for a drop of skiing, good thing is that it is usually in the 70's even up there!!!!! And if it isn't then it will be down to the beach for a bit of body boarding instead!!!

Say what you want about California, but there are only a few places in the world where you can ski in the morning and be surfing in the ocean by lunchtime, or playing on dirt bikes in the desert, fortunately I live in one of them...............1 hour to the slopes , 45 mins to the beach, or 45 minutes to the desert...............luverly!!!!!!! :D:D Throw in the year around, pretty good carp fishing within a few miles and[b] it isn't such a bad place to live..............Honestly!!!!! :D:D

    K :D

Yeah between the earthquakes and the brush fires.

  6. You can modify the hair to use your favourite dough. Instead of a loop at the end of the hair you can tie on a buttton , bead or a cork. This will hold your dough and allow you to fish with a single barbless hook. This makes catch and release a lot easier on the fish and you. If you want I can send you a picture of the rigs I use. I used to fish with dough on a treble hook too. The hair rig is better.

Once again - great looking fish.
