  1. Thanks for the info.

One problem I had in the past is the txi transmitter hitting the buzzbar when twisting on the alarm. Hopefully that puts a gap big enough where it wont hit the transmitter.

I had old hangers when I first got into carping where it had the same type of connection.

I have used the Fox MK2 Swinger with delkim's and have had difficulty turning the alarm switch on and off. I needed to push the entire unit either side to get to the delk switch.

  2. We went through a frigid spell in our neck of the woods recently. The temps dropped pretty low compared to what we've been used to but the past two days finally warmed up just enough to put a few hours in on the bank. I also had an opportunity to hopefully break in my new Greys Prodigy stalker rod.

I arrived at the swim in the early afternoon to see my buddy Doug already fishing. I didn't intend on meeting him there but It was cool to bump into him and have some company for the afternoon. I had first met Doug when we were kids. We lived across the street from each other but lost contact for years after we moved. I bumped into Doug for the first time since then when fishing a local swim only last summer. Doug was already into fishing and hunting but since last summer has been bitten by the carp bug so it's cool to see him get on with his carp fishing and see him bank some fish.

It took a while but I finally got into my first fish of the session. Caught on some XL honey flavoured corn on method feeder/ Hair combo.

I went on to catch 3 more including the common below. My fave out of the three.

When I had my third fish on the mat Doug finally has a hook up and banks his only catch of session. Doug was using his float rod and centrepin combo with a runrig/ hair. He was pretty stoked to have upped his PB on the float rod @ 13lb. Nice one Doug

It wasent long after 5 PM rolled by and we called it a day. A short, enjoyable winter session and I got to break the rod in.

  3. Caught a catfish earlier in the morning fished for 3hrs with out a bite.

Finally when I was loading my car to leave (I always pack my rods and net last) I got some rod taps I thought it was a turtle so I left it alone. A couple seconds later in bolted off peeled lots of line my longest fight to date. By the time I landed him on my own my arms were gone. Every time I dipped the net in the water it'll run it dis it about 10x. I haven't been this excited in a long time. I'm still in shock. But I'm so happy

    WTG Cristain. Sweet fish. Congrats!

  4. Every lake is frozen over and not fishable for icefishing. Last week I was driving all over the place, even going to lakes over a hour drive. I finally found locations where theres no ice and fishable. Water outlets behind dams.

I prebaited today and cant wait for Wednesday. Hope this helps the people that cant find open water :swimminfish:

    Good luck Rebel!

  5. Thanks for that great report and pics, Mark. Gorgeous shot of the slush carp and a healthy specimen at that!

I thoroughly enjoyed it and read very slowly to make it last! Yes, living vicariously through the fishing reports here is wonderful when you can't make it out yourself.

I've yet to fish a PVA bag but that's my new years resolution to learn and ad to my arsenal for 2014.

Question. What is the strategy behind the semi-fixed bold rig?

And a Merry Christmas to you and yours!

    Hi Mike

Well, my strategy was because I was casting across the water aiming underneath an overhanging tree. If I were fishing in a clear space in close I like to use running rigs but find using one in this situation probably won't work. The leads may slide up the line on the cast and might not sit properly after it sinks. I also found it to be more accurate thus building my confidence I will hook the fish plus It keeps it in a nice tidy package.

Reason two is because it's safer on the fish. If the line were to get snagged up and I needed to cut the line the fish will not be tethered up because the weight would come off with a small amount of pressure because the swivel on my hairrig is only particially inserted into the weight. It would just slide off.

The swivel is inserted partly into the weight:

Here it's pushed in as far as it will go making it considerably much harder to pull out.

There are a variety of in line rigs out there.

    Hope this helps

  6. Awesome. Congrats on your catch and enjoyed your report.

Surprised theres no ice up there. The ice is just coming off here.

    pic taken today

"My swim of choice rarely freezes over as a culvert keeps the water just slightly above the freezing. When It does freeze it's just at one end of the venue."

Thanks rebel. The lakes are freezing up here to. This venue has a culvert from a water treatment plant that pumps out water making the water temps just above freezing.

  7. Man, Southern Ontario sure got wolloped by old man winter this weekend. Freezing rain caused damage to property and trees. Yesterday seemed the worst of it. Glad I stayed home. On the other hand I did make it out on Saturday. Saturday was the first official day of winter and the winter solstice. It also made it the shortest day of the year. It's only up from here! My friends know I'm not easily put off by the weather. I don't mind fishing in the winter. As long as the weather isn't too harsh I like to put a session in. Three important factors are to dress correctly, use a shelter and bring hot drinks. If it gets uncomfortable I can always go home.

The weather was actually mild considering. The snow was melting and the thermometer a few degrees above zero. That made a short window to get a rod in the water before the frigid stuff returns. My swim of choice rarely freezes over as a culvert keeps the water just slightly above the freezing. When It does freeze it's just at one end of the venue. It's a tough place to fish in the winter so any catch is appreciated here especially when it's a carp slipping into my net.

    Well protected from the elements

Who's afraid of the big, bad blank?

My baits and end tackle were: A semi fixed In line bolt rig. My swivel was inserted into the lead just enough so that only a small amount of pressure would release it. A short 20lb coated braid hook link. Size 6 curve shank hook. My baits were a 12mm pineapple pop up on the hair. For freebies I stuck with using PVA sticks. In the sticks were powdery store bought method, rolled oats and chopped pineapple boilie. I also spread on some PVA friendly pineapple particle syrup. I don't like to use much bait in the winter. The pop up's and sticks seem to get a few fish on the mat for me during the cold months.

The syrup sticks to the mix adding more attractors. I kinda 'shake and bake it' in the stick mix bag.

    Canadian style butt cap

The migrant winter birds and sorting out my rigs and tackle box kept me entertained awaiting a fish. It was a couple of hours into the session when I finally hear my buzzer go. I had to be careful playing it as there was a large tree branch in the margins. With it being cold water the fish didn't put up much of a fuss and I bank myself a winter solstice slush carp! My strategic cast under a over hanging tree worked.

It may be small but in the winter it's much appreciated and a lot of effort put into catching it.

It turned out to be the only catch of the day. I'm glad I made it out. I love being outdoors. I try to make the most of winter if I can. I was told to put my rods away after fall by some local carpers when I first started getting serious about carp angling. Glad I didn't take that advice. I have learned a few tricks about winter carping since then and looking forward to learning more.

    Cheers all and Merry Christmas!
