  1. Most rivers will likely have some open water somewhere. I don't know where you live Petew, but Brunner's Island near York Haven PA is a warm water discharge. It's fairly shallow and snaggy, but there are lots of carp and other species there. But, the fishing can be hit or miss depending on water level and clarity. I've caught a bunch of fish there before, but mostly small ones. Given that its about 2.5 hours from Philly...I don't really feel its worth the drive.

But, you don't need a WWD to catch carp in the winter, you just have to be strategic in where you chose to fish on a river....patience, clothing and a warm beverage help too!

is this by the PPL power plant? if so, i know where you're talking about. i've fished around there before with a little bit of success. i believe there's always people in boats around that area. my browser wouldn't let me view that link for some reason

  2. my brother and i are looking to leave the harrisburg, pa area and go on a fishing trip for a couple of days. anything within 4-5 hrs. away. maybe meet up with one or a couple cag members to fish for a day or two. we just thought of this, so we haven't really gone into detail. we would prefer river fishing, but if someone knows spots in big lakes we'd like that too. maybe pittsburgh or philly area?

  3. if that fish is 99lbs I will change my name to susan!!! looks like a good forty possibly fifty but no more.. Take it from an englishman living in New York. The Sun paper lies out of its a*s!!!

yea definitely in that pic it looks no where near a 99 lb. fish.

  4. it looks pretty rocky there, if you're having problems with the fish breaking the line you might want to switch to braided line. if you're using 12 lb. mono you're probably losing a lot to the rocks. i had that problem and switched to 50 lb. braid and that ended the problem. don't use a real tight drag though, as something else will break instead of the line.

screw boilies, i've given up on them. too expensive and not enough results, at least for me. use whatever you're catching them on. field corn (maize) is a good idea. very cheap, will stay on the hook or hair better and can be just as good as sweetcorn.

  5. If I can recall correctly, i believe Louis (our beloved President) has a thread out there somewhere about Pinchot. Including a few decent (low 20's - I think) carp.

try the "search' function for "Pinchot"

gifford pinchot state park does have carp over 20 lbs. my friend and i have caught them. it's by lewisberry (about 15 min. south of harrisburg on 83) it is a state park, so fishing reguarly is kind of hard. unless i'm wrong there's no place to fish unless you rent out a campsite. you can fish right from your campsite which is really nice.

i'm from the harrisburg area, if you want big fish look for the river. i've caught several 30's around the middletown area. it's hard to find a place to fish that a lot of people don't already know about. most people that fish where i do tend to fish for catfish. every other place i've found are public access that you can tell a lot of people already fish it.

as far as speedwell forge...you're right about the size. most are 10 lbs and under.

  6. Saw him pitch in Syracuse in his minor league debut. Simply amazing. :D

    The excitement never ends. :)

i watched his mlb debut...the movement on his fastball was ridiculous. once he's scouted he won't look at good, but the pirates looked like they wanted no part of him. they had no idea what was coming up.

  7. Look's like he's off to a good start! :)

one of these times i'll have to get a video of him with a fish. when he gets the fish close to the bank he starts yelling "FISH!" i love watching him, it's so fun to watch the excitement over a little bluegill.

we'll be behind home plate. so nothing this game. some time we'll sit by the outfield and hopefully get a foul ball. i wish i coulda seen strausburg pitch. he was phenomenal in his debut; even if it was the pirates.

  8. and these were from another time we went fishing. hes almost able to hold the rod and reel in the fish by himself. he's 2 1/2 now. after he wakes up from his nap we're going to go out for a little before a minor league baseball game.

  9. just figured i'd share the pictures of my son's first fish. he was very excited and loves to go fishing now. i've yet to catch a carp while he was with (he only last an hour though.) i did happen to catch a channel catfish at the pond with a boilie. sorry for the poor handling of the catfish, but i was alone with no sling and my son had to have the fish out of the water.

  10. i wouldn't mind fly fishing, but i got enough money tied up into regular fishing. i don't need another thing to spend money on haha.

anytime i go out you're more than welcome to join. like i said, i'm hoping to get out one more time this year, but the river is very high so i'm not sure if it'll happen.

  11. went to walker today and it sucked. only one carp in 5 hrs. o well, at least i got out to fish. i've never fly fished, so have no idea about that stuff haha. i'll give you a heads up next time i head out round harrisburg. the river has to come down a lot and don't know if it'll be too cold for me by then.

  12. Thanks guys. I am stoked indeed. I feel a carp binge coming on. All a great mystery at the moment, gear, places, technique. Familiar territory. Taught myself to fly fish and straight razor shave, the latter with the benifit of a forum like this. I cant wait.

Is there a PA chapter? Anyone in central PA going out soon?

    Best to all!!!!

hey, i'm from Harrisburg. where are you from? i'm going to walker lake tomorrow in snyder county i think it is. it's near penns creek (the town) just off of route 104. i get out as often as i can in the rivers around harrisburg. let me know where you're from and maybe we could fish sometime. i'm still relatively new, but have learned A LOT from this site, as i'm sure you will too. if you're near harrisburg i know of several places to go for carp. around TMI in middletown is good. i've caught them in the 30's around there.

louis mentioned gifford pinchot. that's another good place. it's a state park and you can camp right on the lake and fish all day and night. i've been there once and caught several nice carp there.

i've done a lot of carp fishing on the susquehanna too. very good place for carp.

  13. So today went to the local pet store to pick up some food for my 75 gallon fish tank. I have three yellow perch one channel cat and a koi *cough* carp. biggest fish is the cat whick is 6 inches with the perch ranging from 4-6 and the koi 5-6 inches maybe. So go to the koi section and look into the pond where the 9-10 inch butterfly koi are and i see these smaller dark almost brown fish i look up at the sign and doesnt it say carp on it. they had about 5 ranging from 3-6 inches. Before i could look back down at the fish i had one in a bag in my hand ready to go. got one thats about 4 inches really unique color to him but boy did that make my day. I will probably post a picture tomorrow after i go carpin at my favorite pond

thats awesome! i have 3 koi and an albino channel catfish in my 75 gal. tank. i'd love to add a carp in there.
