  1. If you go into Specialist's tackle shop in upstate NY you'd see they have their own rods equiped with

Shimano Aero Technium 10000XT reels... Shimano's top reel... £390 rrp.. available from the chop-shops for

$460 + tax, tip and gratuities (each)...

Fran, Does Specialist have an actual phisical location in NY? Where in upstate are they??

The Riverview motel (and tackle shop) located in Waddington NY is owned and

operated by the same Specialist Tackle family.

  2. Fran,

It is a very delicate subject about product line and on which soil as a retailer you can sell...without going into detail, Shimano USA can stop a retailer from selling UK stock on USA soil.

    Len:

I'm sure that's true. But most of the guys are just looking for some of the state-of-the-art

products that are available in the UK and not the USA. Many of the US carpers buy from

Specialist Tackle in the UK and have it shipped here. Others swear by Tackle Box, Leslies,

Tackle Shop etc. Others swear at them.

Buying from the UK is no different than buying here in the USA. Matter of fact sometimes I think

Shimano UK is easier to deal with than Shimano USA. They send parts to the USA but Shimano USA

now directs you to a local service center. They don't have the part I need so it's special ordered

from Shimano USA and 2 weeks later I have it.

  3. Well, Now that the 2005 ATC is over. :D ..and the Boards will return to the "NORMAL" chatter... :D

I find myself in need of INPUT. for the ATC 2006 ! :D '(things take time to develop)

    Neil:

I attended the first 3 ATC events. Not this year as I wanted to spend more time up @ Larry, especially @ the WCC.

My own opinion about the prizes is::::

The winners have won enough with the pool money and trophy??? Next year with the expected 50 entries the 1st place monies will be outta sight.

The donated prizes that go to the winners is missplaced. The first year (2 years ago) Alex donated 2 Amauid Pech

pods (the SS model and the green beast) both were soon on the for-sale market..

Last year when Brian took possession of the SS AP pod I immediatly offered him 1/2 the going price (cash). His reply was

"are you serious".. I passed but I got my needed reply. This year I think the guys wouldn't have known the prize was not there.

I assume the event is still a CAG fund raiser as it was in the beginning, although the specific event financial statements aren't

    part of the yearly accounting.

    BLAH-BLAH-BLAH...

My opinion is... Take the top prizes (as Dave did the first year) and have an auction or a raffle (maybe $10 or $20 / ticket) and make some money for the good of the firm...

    My opinion only.

    Fran

PS I'll be there next year (God willing) for 1 or 2 weeks..

  4. Now, Chris, will SPECIALIST TACKLE ever go into Shimano?

  5. Yeah, well, this doesn't help with my 11 feet rods.  :D

    Jerome:

Go to www.usps.com. The US Postal Service web-site.

Then "calculate postage" and follow the route.

    I just did a model parcel for 11 ft rods (69 inches/71" parcel length/ 12" girth ) = 83" which is 1" under

the standard package (84") 18lbs. Priority Mail ------ 2 day delivery.....

    Postage zip code 01085 (w-mass) to Austin (78748 sister-in-laws) $26.25 $200 insurance +$3.20

    Total $29.45......

If your parcel makes the (under84") package this is the best route.....

  6. Yes, I am going to try this avenue tomorrow. I hate to mix up work and personal stuff in such a way, but sounds that there isn't much of a choice. My company uses Fedex, by the way.

    Jerome:

Fedex and UPS are very competitive. Make sure you ask about the return pickup/tag.

    Fran

  7. a 72  inch package  6 inches or so wide will cost about 23 dollars  ground from boston to austin.  and the same on the way back.

this is if you can get someone who has an account to ship them for you and then make a return label for you.

this is what tommy and i did last year  they were waiting for us at the hotel when we arrived and then ups  came and picked em up after the event

Another UPS quirk. The normal prices quoted are for parcels in a corrugated cardboard box.

If you use a paper or plastic tube (plastic bazooka tube also) there is a add-on handling charge of $5

for commercial customers, $7 @ the UPS store.

  8. this is the first time i am bringing my rods on a plane. i don't know how to pack them . what is safest way to get my rods to TX?  one of my friends told me that i should UPS it to someone in TX or the hotel. i am looking ideas. please help me out

    Vinny:

You should take your 3 piece rods (I do have the third one at a nice price) and put them along with your pod or banksticks) in a piece of plastic pipe. The package would only be 52" long and would go on the plane as regular luggage.

    Fran

  9. Brin

So I checked UPS and Fedex. Well, for an item of the size of a rod tube, Fedex seems 30% less expensive than UPS. Seems to cost between $25 and $35 to ship a 7 to 8 feet rod tube. And there is a Fedex location close to the hotel (but not in the airport, this is silly) for sending your stuff back. My wife will go to a Fedex store tomorrow to double-check.

    Jerome:

What's really interesting is if you send your rods etc. from a location that has a UPS account (where UPS picks up the parcels once a day) the price paid is from 1/3 to 1/2 of what you pay at a UPS store. Get real friendly with someone in the shipping

    dept. where you work.

I tend to think many mail order companies make more on shipping charges than they do on their product. ( i.e. Cabelas)

  10. Whered you see it? I was told by him it was legit, is he pulling my leg?

    Scott:

I think it was on a Ct site last week. I did see it before. I do belive it is ligit.

I'm trying to get a similar pic of some of the local animals that frequent our

back yard. Moose, deer, coyotes, etc.

Sunday afternoon as I unloaded my ice-stuff I watched a gobbler try to proposition

any of the three hen-decoys I have under a apple tree out back. About the time I had the

camera in position he lost interest and moved off. Got some decent pics of a bob-cat

thinking he had a sure meal but was fluxmomed at the texture of the birds.

    Winter is still here.

    See you girls next Sunday.

  11. IS THERE ARE A GOOD STEAK JOINT around Town Lake? :D

    Rippin' :D

    Rippin:

Yes. Texas Land and Cattle, a decent steak house. Just up the road a piece. Right out of the motel,

left onto the highway, right to the eatery. There's another beef place there also but the name escapes me.

Texas kinda place. Meadow muffins on the floor, hay everywhere, scantily clad (with huge breathing apparatus)

cowgirl waitresses etc. Good red meat available.

  12. We went family fishing today (very rare event!), and my son Valentin caught a... "thing"... which will not help at all to convince other anglers that carp is indeed a beautiful fish... I mean, look at this face!  :D

    Jerome:

By the background it looks like the ice is gone from the Charles.

    Is it so?

    Fran

  13. Fran ....

    Great stuff!!!

    VERY cool...

Is that a tree branch and canned corn I see??? I guess that would be considered AMERI style ????

    Rob:

Actually that fish was caught from the bridge using my own Potatoe Bread Boilie.

The carp everywhere seem to like them. I keep a jug of them in my tackle bag and

I go-to them when I want to be different (which is most all the time). Last week I

tried my favorite EO but the carp were not avin- um. Scott and everyone else were

doin the business free-lining bread but that's not my bag. I did catch using pescaviva

and pips but I had to try my PB boilies. The carp liked um.

I think this is a picture of Gate with a carp he landed from the bridge on my 32" jig-rod

that I cast out with corn on the hook.

  14. Scott and Guys:

FYI Sunday I had (on a tip-up) a carp that I would say was in the 15 - 20lb range.

When I arrived at daylight the joggers path was glare ice and not a person in sight.

I cleaned out all the holes we cut Saturday, there was about 1" of ice in them. The first

hole "Vinney's hot spot" I set a tip-up. While rigging a jig-rod in Scott's hot spot the first

tip-up went off. As usual a 2' run and nothing.. Back to rigging #2 and off #1 goes again.

Same story. Got #2 rigged up and of to #3 (my Saturday hole that had 5 runs without a fish)

#1 is off again and when I get there the reel is buzzing. Needless to say I land my first carp

thru the ice on a tip-up. All went quit so I got to rig up the 2 jig rods and 1 more tip-up.

When the sun came over the skyline (8am) the far tip-up went off. When I got there it was

screaming. I was into a serious big fish. About five minutes into the see-saw battle the line went limp.

I was gobsmacked to say the least. I looked over and one of the jig-rods was dumping line.

Another carp and a much nicer battle on the jig-rod. When he was running I could stick the (3ft)

rod under the ice. Shortly landed and a few pics taken. Still no lovelys on the path.

Another run on the other rod. Another ice-carp landed. Runners and walkers now but nobody would

come down on the ice. About 9am another run and another carp (the smallest of the group)..

A BC girl was watching and I finally talked her down onto the ice to take a picture. She was

amazed I released the fish back into the hole and more amazed she was standing on the river..

For another hour there were numerous takes but no hook-ups.

I'm convinced the poor hook-up ratio is because there is no bolt-rig type set up to drive the hook

home. We're free-lining without the instant hook-set with a hand held rod. When we had 1 oz

leads there were no takes. Scott thinks the carp can sense the weight and they drop the bait.

I feel with no weight they pick up the bait and run but can sense the hook and drop the rig. This

happened 10 times to me Saturday and more Sunday.

The under-ice technique needs more work. We'll try again to perfect the presentation and hook-up.

In my opinion using a 3ft rod allows a much better chance of landing a carp thru the ice. You have

the ability to put the rod tip under the ice to protect the line from damage at the ice edge. When the

fish is ready the rod can be arched up and you can gill the fish thru the hole onto the ice.

It seems they do bleed a bit more easily (probably because of their thinned blood due to the extreme

cold water) but they do swim off with great vigor.

Hopefully we can add more info next week.
