  1. The criticism came from guys who didn't know why he used the boga-grip. And until they walk in the fly fishier-mans shoes or waders the Euro-style guys can only guess at what would work in every case. Just treat the fish the best way you can,

I actually go fly fishing here in the UK and have never used one of these items on salmon or trout. Could you give me an idea as to why they are used. Over here we even did away with an item called a pike gag, a spring type gadget to keep a pikes mouth open whilst unhooking.

  2. Over here in the UK, the teams draw for a peg and are allowed to fish the area of water in front of them and within a designated area to prevent crossing into othere teams areas. I should imagine that comps over there are run on roughly the same lines.

  3. You can use a variety of different oils such as fish oil, peanut (groundnut) sesame oil....available from chinese food stores, sunflower oil, vegetable oil or you could go foor the spcialist types of ils from an angling supplies but these will cost you more of your hard earned.

This is the way I was describing earlier, cheap, easy and safe.

This set up can be used to give you the "semi fixed" bolt rig effect but with the use of swivel weights, also good antitangle properties due to the "stand off" effect of the tube.

  5. If you are using inline leads, use a short lenght of stiff rig tude through the lead, you may have to open up the hole throught the centre a little. On the end ot the tube slide on a snug fitting piece of rudder tube.

Thread your main line through the tude with the rubber at the bottom, away from the rod, tie on your hook link swiveland then lightly push the rubber tube over the swivel loop that the main line is tied to, dont go too far on.

This will act in the place of the lead clips, and is safer as the rubber pulls off the swivel in the event of a snapoff very easily.

Some of the lead clips need to be altered to allow them to release the lead otherwise they become fixed and the weight cannot be pulled off.

  6. powdered egg will indeed cost more than fresh eggs, but they also contain a higher percentage of protien than fresh ones, don't figure.

Use dried egg at the rate of 0.5 - 2oz per ten oz of dry mix.

Glueten at the rate of 1-3oz per ten oz

The mix that you originally said you were going to use is fairly low in the protien content as semolina, corn flour and rice flour only contain approx 8% protien.

  7. Take care when shrinking the tube as some types of braid are effected by heat and this can cause a weak spot in the hook link. Try to keep the heat at a temp that will just cause the tube to shrink, hot water is useful with some braids.

  8. Paulw,

Ha,ha!! Your suggestion reminds me of a true story. We had been having trouble with ducks, lots of ducks in mid-fall on a well known very large South Missouri lake. They weren't eating our corn, we weren't chumming, just too many darn ducks!! We heard of this remedy, green lazer lights, and one of the fishermen in the party was an avid archer. He had two green lazers. We awoke in the morning after carefully setting two green lazer lights in a stationary beam skimming across the water for the night about midnight. Anyway, when dawn arrived we had no fewer than 2 or 3 hundred commorants carefully harvesting the minnows the lights had appearently stirred up to the surface during the night. But, No ducks!! True story.

Did I forget to mention that the green lasers are attached to this

  9. if you are getting pestered by cats and turtles try using boilies for bait, nothing but carp will generally be interested in them.

Oh! how I wish i lived in a place where this happens, over here in the UK we have been using boilies for so long that virtually every species will havea go at them, imagine how annpying it is to find an 8oz silver fish on the end of your line after winding in, with an 18mm bait on the hair.:yourock:

  10. JDP..

If you want to work out the min/max and optimum line strenght for the test curve of the rods you are wanting to use, use the following calculation

Test Curve (in pounds) x 4 for minimum line bs

Test Curve (in pounds) x 5 for optimum line bs

Test Curve (in pounds) x 6 for maximum line bs

    for example:- 3 pound test x 4 = 12lb min

    3 pound test x 5 = 15lb optimum

    3 pound test x 6 = 18lb max.

  11. Here in the UK there used to be a "North, South" divide regarding the placement of the rods. Up North the trend was to put rod tips down whilst in the South the rods tips were up, this was due to the fact thatmost of the Southern waters were formed from old gravel workings and the higher rod tips meant that the line would be clear of the gravel bars, thus helpingto prevent line rub on the sharp grave.Up North there were less gravel workings and most of the lakes were "soft" bottomed.

The rods up also helps to clear weed beds, so it really does depend upon the situation you find yourself in.

  12. For acouple of the simplest boilie recipies try the following:-

    Dried Cat Food

    Trout feed pelets

Simply grind the cat food or the pellets, add the powder to whisked eggs, roll and boil for up to 2 mins. No need for flavouring.

You could also try adding thetwo different powders together to form a third bait.

  13. No trees around, they were 20 feet off shore. Wow, I saw an orgy!! B)

New question(s): I fish the bottom with corn or boilies, using bobbers between my guides for strike indication. I have two types of "hits". Some, the bobber goes up and right back down and it's over. My understanding is a carp picked it up and dropped it and moved on.

The 2nd kind of "hit" finds my bobber slamming the rod and the fish running with the bait like a torpedo. I am getting way to many hits/fish hooked. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? ...when to set the hook?

Starting with your first question, as your indicator is rising and then falling back again this is most probably caused by a "line bite". This means that ish are rubing against or swimming under your lin etc and causing the indicatoe to move. The fish donot have to be near your bait......highly frustrating.

For the second question there could be a number of reasons for not hooking the fish the main one being that the hair is too long and the carp are pickng up the bait, feeling the weight and making a run for if before dropping the bait. Try shortning the hair to about half an inch from the bend.

  14. Are there any advantages to floss?

For a start it's cheap, anything that hasn't got a fishing companylogo on it is a fraction of the cost.

You generally get a longer length on the spool than with hooklength material.

You can alter the colour yourself to suit the lake/river bed (use permanant markers)

The dispenser has a built in cutter....no need to call to the tackle shop for branded boxes

Plus it's gor a cool minty taste if you need to floss after eating whilst fishing B)

  15. probably one of the best and cheapest ways for hairs is to use dental floss , also makes good hook links it averges around 20lb bs but you need to test your brand first B)

Just be sure to use the unwaxed variety as this will prevent it floating......unless of course you are surface fishing. B)

  16. follow the fish dave ,,, fish where you see them B)

Sound advice, you have to follow the fish, too many people fall into the trap of heading for the "producing" pegs, usually the ones nearest to the carpark, only to sit behind silent alarms due to the fact that these pegs have recieved a lot of angling pressure and the carp have been forced to move. Have a good scout around, especially in the often less used areas and you could be surprised.

  17. Now there is just ONE sign on the lake by the dam that is very small and reads "No fishing for carp allowed".

So who is to know whether or not you're fishing for carp and/or catfish? They both will take the same baits a lot of the time as I have experienced.

You could fish for them quietly B) (sorry couldn't resist)

As you mention that both carp and cats will take the same baits if you are chalenged you could always say that you are fishing for cats and if you "accidently" hook one of those "darned" carp it was a mistake B)

Over here in the UK many people use fish meal boilies with the express intention of catching cats, though ours are a different species than yours i think but the principle is the same.

You can't possibly be held responsible if the "wrong fish picks your bait up now, can you?
