  1. yeah i gave that a quick try a couple days ago, probably not at the greatest spot in the world, and with a pole that someone had left just laying there, I had trouble gauging the depth. Great idea practicing somewhere where the bottom contour, and makeup is known.

  2. well, we started at the spot in the picture above and fished for about 3 hours. We threw out plenty of free ground bait, not too much and not too little. The only evidence we saw was a good size fish breach to clear its gills multiple times. Looked like a big fish, MONSTER TAIL. That was it for the morning. Went back down to the outflow spot, and the fish were STACKED UP. I ordered a marker float so that I can fish the spot in the picture above next season, and can't wait to explore it further.

  3. So I'm heading out tommorow with a couple freinds to the spot that has been producing some GREAT fish. Last week it was a short trip to the spot mainly because of SUPER high water. The area is controlled by dams and the only flow data I can get online is WAYYYYY upstream in the salmon/trout areas so it is useless. Its too far of a drive to scout conditions or even prebait on a regular basis. So..... the plan is to go check the crazy swim first light and see how the flow is, then as a backup plan head to one of many backup spots. All of the backup spots are upriver and I have never fished them. One, which will most likely be plan B, is a boat launch area which has a dam about 400yds downstream. There are a MILLION other spots in the general area that look REALLY fishy but I'm not really sure what I should be looking for this time of year. ITS COLD AS hell up here right now. Should I target outflows, eddys, shallow, deep? Just not sure what to look for and why. In the other spot were mainly fishing in a very shallow river 4-5ft with a little bit deeper of a channel (7/8ft) and were fishing in, and just on the edge of the channel where a substantial amount of bigger fish have been coming from. Any and all input is appreciated.

Best I could do was get a snapshot from google earth. The area just above the roped off section is the boat launch on the right side of the image.

    thanks

  4. B)

AWESOME write up, all the important information and a hell of a fish to boot. I've been going throught the same thing over the past month. ALOT of blanking and then an INCREDIBLE month of fishing. Its funny that you decided to heave that rod out one last time, I was just explaining to my fiance this morning (blank session) as to why I leave at least one rod out till the absolute last minute. Congrats to the fish that will drive you to fish harder and longer to achieve that 50.

    Great 7th post B)

  5. Great job on a great tournament. Seems to be what Ct needed to get the sport of carp fishing into the spotlight. There was ALOT of news coverage on this event, both on tv and in the papers. Congrats to everyone on what seemed like a tough weekend. Great pictures

  6. Okay, so yesterday was a great day of carp fishing, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! Today however was a whole different ballgame. Eric (mudbug) and I headed to the river in search of some falltime cows. I originally got into carp fishing, after seeing some of the fish that he had pulled out of our local lake, so its always cool to fish with him.

Same area, same techniques. Hair rigged boilies with doughbait, and a method feeder with the same doughbait. We fished from about 9am until 2pm and I lost track of the fish smaller than 20lbs, allthough there were quite a few 16s, and 17/18lb fish. Many times I yelled, WE NEED A BIGGER NET!. Two of erics fish I had to get in the water and wrestle/cradle them because they were WAY too big for the net. I landed 3 fish over 20lbs (was going for 4 to beat yesterday) Mudbug now has 3pbs to add to his list.

PB common carp 32lbs (as I walked over he said, I think its about a 10lbr)

    PB mirror carp 20lbs

and numbers wise carping, best day.

The mirror carp was a double up between the two of us, me with a 20lb common and eric with his mirror carp. Another great day of fishing with some honkers on the bank.

  7. Awesome Haulin at its best.

I just gotta say, 10/20 will be a day not forgotten.

So anyways I missed the whole entire raffle (at anothers websites piketoberfest tournament) and a bunch of other stuff shooting the chit with a new member to the site, and a couple buddies. Aquadan, Nigel griffin, and Brian (rapid rooster). I'm not sure if anyone saw Brians boat, but it is MY dreamboat. Old alum. army boat, sick as# motor, with mufflers and pipes out the back, and whatya know? Its A JET BOAT! Insert pictures that I wish I took here ----->

Most carp anglers have probably heard the name before, but Nigel is one of the old school guys that helped introduce "european" style carp fishing to the US. Chanelmatt had a lent me a couple videos a while ago and one of them was Nigels, explaining methods, bait etc etc, so it was really funny to actually meet the guy at piketoberfest knowing all that. yeah yeah we'll get to the carp and the pictures, hang on a second. So were shooting the chit and start talking about a nice little spot in NY that produces state records (carp over 50lbs) whatya know, Heather knows all about the place, small world. Got some great intel and hopefully a couple more people to ice/carp fish with, good to meet you guys.

So I got into Monday with some motivation and determination, rethought rigs, changed a couple things around and it paid off. Its a good thing Ctoutfitters started carrying the gear needed, without it, id be like clamslayer, mystified as to why WE never thought of stuff like this ;\)

rigs: 8ft tica, m/h okuma epixor eb40 BR, 12ft black phantom 23/4lb test curve, okuma epixor eb65 BR. Both spooled with 50lbpp

Method feeder weights with oatmeal/corn bait, and boilies, homemade banana corn on hair rigs

I fished by myself from about 9am until 3:30pm just before dave arrived to help. Most of the day I couldn't keep 2 rods in the water, cast a bait, fish on. The fights would last a lil bit, I'd regroup and cast back out, put it down, fish on.

Heres the stats, then check the vid and pictures, pretty crazy.

    Total carps:25+

    Dave: 3 first fish 18lb+ 16+ and a peanut (10ish)

    Me: 24 fish, best 3 20lb5oz 21lb5oz and 22lb4oz,

There were def a couple 15-17lb fish mixed in and a dozen fish smaller, most I put on the unhooking mat, and released them as quick as I could so I could cast another bait back out. Heres a couple pictures to get started, video will be a bit.

  8. So your using a running rig right? How long is hair rig, hook to swivel? How loose or tight is you runner? How heavy is the lead you are using?

Yes, when im using the hair rig there is a 1/4" gap between the top of the doughball and the hook, hook to swivel is about 10" average, and a 2 or 3oz weight when fishing in current, and as small a weight as possible when fishing ponds/lakes. Now when you ask how tight or loose is the runner, we talking the reel? If so, as loose as possible. Im starting to think I should be catching alot more fish and am just getting lucky with the ones I happen to land.

  9. ill put some pics of my rigs up later, shouldnt be the hooks, brand new hooks sharp as hell.

Its a pretty basic rig, 50lb ppro (main line) in line method weight, shock bead, barrell swivel 10" of the same braid and hook. I have rigged the baits straight to the hook and also rigged with hair rigs. This is mainly using doughbaits, havn't been lucky enough to tie into a maize or boilie fish.

  10. This is how I set my rods up for now until I find an affordable pod that suits me. Ive noticed recently that if I'm not sitting right on top of my lines, my bites are short bursts, and if I don't pickup the rod right when its happening I don't catch the fish. I don't think I've ever had a fish take the bait whatever kind of rig it is and run with it for a short period of time (more than 20/30 seconds) I'm wondering if its because of the angle my rod is at. My assumption is that, because carp are resistance/tackle weary the less resistance when they pull the better. I lay my rods with the rod tip as close to the water as possible for that reason, I see tons of pictures though with rods at a 45 degree angle so maybe its not as Important as I thought? Any suggestions/theories as to why I get so many short bites?

  11. well its beautiful weather here today, which is good for the guys, stopped by the peg draw last night. Pretty cool stuff. the gentleman who had contacted acs was there, and at the end, they mentioned that park staff would be on hand to cut steps into the banks and trim trees for pegs that needed it which I thought was pretty awesome. should be some good hauls after today, expecting a bit of rain tonight, as long as its not too much it will DEF help the fishing. Good luck guys, may stop down at some point before/after work.

  12. there is also a shop RIGHT around the corner from charter oak park id say within 5 minutes. They should have out of state licenses. As far as I know, if youve never had a Ct license you cannot get one online, not positive though. I spoke with the owner monday and they are expecting a decent size order from resistance on friday, for any last minutes forgotten items. I know Cabelas HAS NOTHING.

  13. Thanks to member marktheshark from ctfisherman.com, I know hes a member on here, not sure of the member name he posted this info in 2003 and I use it as my go to. Im just modifying it a bit. Im making a batch of boilies for the upcoming weekend and figured i'd repost the information. Here is his recipe for making your own boilies. For anyone wondering what a boilie is, its pretty much a feed pellet for carp, it can float a couple inches above the bottom (pop up) or lay right on the bottom in the right conditions. Either way it is usually accompanied by a "bed" of free offerings, tossed out in numerous forms pva bag (dissovable plastic bag) or a spod (rocket filled with birdseed, corn, etc) when the spod lands, it rights itself in the water and dumps out whatever you packed into it.

I modified the recipe by added crushed up fish food (shrimp pellets, and flake food) and also microwaved some for the Pop up effect. I then tested the "popups" after cooking and they worked. The difference between cooking the popups and the regular boilies was.... After prep, hand pick some of the good looking boilies (you wont be using these as chum) and put them on a plate making sure not to let them touch and microwave for a minute. After a minute check them to see if they are still soft, bake for 15 more seconds, until they feel baked but soft (usually another minute of 15 second increments, moving them around each time) Pics at the bottom, NOTE, the jager is to prepare yourself for the time it takes to HAND ROLL each single piece HAHAHAHAHA

    Recipe

    Boilies for Carp

"Many anglers know that using sweet corn, bread or and many other baits that they can catch carp, but the problem they have is that other fish like to eat these type of baits too. So when carp anglers like to target just carp, they use boilies. Boilies are very rarely, if not never eaten by other fish.

It is always good to chum the water first with sweet corn or maize and then use a boilie as your hookbait. I found in practise that if you flavor your sweet corn with the same flavor that your boilie is, it will increase bites. I like to use cherry flavored sweet corn with a cherry boilie. Just add a packet of Kool-Aid to your can of corn and let it soak into the corn over night.

In Europe companies make millions a year selling boilies, which come in thousands of flavours and colors. Buying boilies from a manufacturer can be expensive if you fish for carp all year round. So a lot of carp anglers like to make there own. I do the same, it saves me alot of money and also I get to design my own special flavors.

Here is the way I make my boilies...

    Ingredients

    Base Mix (Dry Ingredients)

    1lb. Semolina

    6oz. Soy Flour

    2oz. Cornmeal

    1/2oz. Sugar

2 packets Blastin' Berry Cherry Kool-Aid (or 2 packets of any other Kool-Aid flavor)

    Liquid Mix (Wet Ingredients)

    6 Eggs

2 drops of Red Food Coloring

    Instructions

    1. Mix together your base mix (dry ingredients) in a bowl.

    2. Whisk your liquid mix (wet ingredients) in a larger bowl.

    3. Slowly add your base mix into your liquid mix and stir with a heavy spoon, then get your hands in there and keep adding the base mix until you form a stiff paste. If you run out of base mix and the mixture is not stiff, add more semolina.

    4. Roll the paste into as many small 1/2inch balls as you can. Unless you have a sausage gun and rolling table this has to be done by hand which takes a while.

    5. Bring a large pot of water to the boil, use a strainer and boil a handful of your rolled paste balls for 60 seconds. Remove and place on paper towels. Repeat until there is no paste left.

    6. You now have boilies!! Let these dry overnight on the paper towels and then place them into ziplock bags and put them into the freezer until you need to use them. If you just leave them out and do not freeze them, they will start to mold. Remember to let them defrost a few hours before you go fishing.

When the boilies have dried they will have a hard skin, so the best way to fish with them is to use a hair rig.

For people that do no know about the hair rig, I will explain in my next post.

Any comments, questions or recipes please do not hesitate to reply to this post.
