  1. due to unforeseen circumstances I am looking for another partner for the TOC. If anyone is interested please contact me via pm, deposit is already taken care of. Free place to stay the night of the peg draw, as well as after the tournament. I don't return to work until the wednesday after the TOC so a couple days of fishing afterwards is also possible.

  2. I forgot about the carp sprint between you guys, I've never seen such an oddly matched pair running FULL speed at a screaming rod. Big bird almost went end over end :D Next year is going to be interesting. I forgot to mention the guy that swam through our spread monday, and the people on their pleasure boats towing tubers, and waterskiers right next to the barges in the INTERNATIONAL SEAWAY :)

  3. I gotta say, this past weekends trip is what CAG is all about, people coming together from all walks of life and locations for the love of carp.

Plans were set last month for a long weekend on the larry. As I often do, I offered a place to stay on Chaumont Bay. Josh was a shoe in and greg aka snagmagnet made his "reservations" well in advance. The "big" surprise was a pm from the one and only BIG BIRD. Information was relayed and the plan was set in motion. Before I could leave, a last minute call confirmed an unknown and soon to be carp conversion. A long time friend Steve (now known as Captain Ahab, the dentist) is an accomplised surf fisherman and no stranger to large fish. We had lost touch over the years, and I was really excited (as was he) to have him along for the trip.

As best made plans often do, Saturday saw some changes with Bigbird and his wife, josh, and kenny aka powder arriving at the house early Saturday morning. My parents welcomed everyone with open arms and people settled in. Because of work I wasn't able to arrive until later that night but was very surprised to arrive at a house where everyone seemed to have known each other for years.

The crew had prebaited a spot I fished last year and done well at. After a serious dinner of multiple pizzas we relaxed in the backyard waiting for someone to hook up with a fish, but it wasn't meant to be. It was a great night of relaxing, and stories were shared keeping the neighbors awake with the hardy laughter coming from the backyard. I honestly can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. Alarms were set for 4:30 the next morning and the 60 mph winds helped everyone fall asleep.

I awoke at 4am after NIGHTMARES that "may" have had something to do with Bigbirds stories and everyone was soon ready to go. We arrived with a few fish showing and it soon looked like a CAG fish in. We took up the whole wall in the park and BB was first up to bat with a mid teener banked. Greg soon showed up and the crew was complete. I'm not really sure who caught what, but as slow as it was everyone managed to see at least a little action. Greg and josh both hit some fish with joshs going 21.06 and gregs hitting 18.03. Now I don't know what qualifies as a "drive by" but as josh fought his fish, his other rod went off and myself and steve both attempted to "help" josh out with a little coaching from BB. We slowly picked away at stragglers throughout the day, and as the rain started to come down packed up to head home for a cookout.

With 7 of us eating, I've never seen or cooked so much food in my life, these guys have some SERIOUS appetites. 15 burgers, 2 packs of nathans dogs, homemade coleslaw, potato salad, and a few melons later it didn't take long for a food coma to set in. Food coma or not, we were here to fish and the larry was on our minds. It didn't take long for josh to convince us all we had to go back and the fish were waiting for us in Cape Vincent. Greg and kenny aka powder had to leave so we made sure to get a group picture before they did.

Arriving in Cape Vincent the rain that was supposed to have stopped POURED down upon us as we set up. Fish crashed here and there and we hoped for some better action than the afternoon. Steve got a phone call and as carp anglers we knew what that meant. Before any of us could say anything he dropped the phone and set into the fish with his custom lamiglass surf rod like it was a record tuna. Within minutes we had respectfully named him Captain Ahab the dentist. He must have been laying on a bed of mussels because his heavy braid was sheared clean off. We all started to talked about the infamous and ever elusive corn muskie and chalked it up to a carp learning experience. A mistake he was for sure not to make again. At this point Captain Ahab was allready converted and he hadn't even caught a fish yet. I picked up a nighttime fish at 22lbs and we packed it in around midnight.

Monday morning brought about a MANDATORY breakfast for BB and josh, while steve and I headed to a new spot that we hadn't yet picked out. I said goodbye to BB and his wife cindy, two of the coolest "strangers" I had ever met. Josh had planned to join us on our exploration, but decided to head home for some bigger fish for the TOKS tourney. With the sessions hes had recently, who could blame him. As I pulled out of the driveway I saw the bucket of corn in my rearview but foolishly left without it.

Steve and I arrived in Clayton and walked around a bit trying to find a good spot to fish. We finally picked an area away from all the tourists where I had seen some BIG FISH in years past while on vacation. The area was interesting to say the least. Similar to the spot from the day before, the water straight from the bank dropped straight down to 25 feet and 20 yards out was a good 35+. As a team, we spent an hour spombing out bait and quickly developed a rythym. It is much easier when 2 people are working the spomb, and when retrieving I would get it right out of the water into the bucket where steve was ready to fill it. We set up and enjoyed the 95 degree heat and horrible humidity. Shoals passed through on and off throughout the day and at some points was COMPLETE anarchy with multiple rods going off. Steve having learned the lesson from the night before picked up on how to fight a carp pretty quickly and I lost count of how many mid and high teeners we caught. Steve landed his best fish at about 1pm just shy of 20lbs a beautiful muddler that showed him just how excited he was to have steve catch him ALL OVER HIS ARMS.......... I picked up my best of the "day" shortly thereafter just a hair over 20lbs. As night progressed we prepared as much as possible and caught numerous mid and upper teeners with a couple fish coming unbuttoned.

As more and more fish began to crash over our bait I had high hopes for a few bigger fish to come through, and I was rewarded before midnight with a 31lbr that fell for some vanilla cukk corn rolled in concepts super slimy cream dream. On the saxon this fish was a PLEASURE to play under the rod tip trying to get down that deep wall right at the net MULTIPLE times, never had I fought a fish like that at the end. We gave it a couple more hours and packed up with big smiles on our faces knowing we had conquered a new spot.

It was a great weekend and I'm sure others will have stuff to add that I forgot..............oh some pictures.

  4. I've caught a few fish from my local lake in the past few years that I had considered to be mirror carp, but in watching some recent videos I'm not really sure. Is there a mix between mirrors and leathers? Is there a reason one mirror looks different than another? Most if not all of these fish have NO scales other than a line down the top, and most of the bodies have "splotches" of skin.
