  1. Neil says that last years champs are at last going to get crappy pegs both days and finish in the bottom 10%.

He also said that the team bringing their fiancée (one team member) and wife (the other team member) are dead certain to catch more than anyone as the ladies will be preparing all the baits, thus imbuing the baits with all the female pheromones that carp are attracted to.

Lastly any team without a Brit from California has no chance of winning; as Californian Brits have been given special dispensation due to the amount of BS thrown their way the rest of the year.

  2. I agree with this.

I would like to think that if someone needed assistance in getting to a peg ( specifically the disabled) that one or more of our fellow anglers who are in close vicinity will help them tote their gear to their swim .

do we have any stewards attending the event ? perhaps at the peg draw if someone gets a peg that will cause difficulty due to a physical condition ( phone mental feebleness doesnt count :D ) they can ask for assistance from a steward before th event starts. just a thought .

Mark and Neil - Kristina (my fiancee) has said that she would help out weighing fish in the area that we (Karl & I) are pegged (proviso that it is not raining).

  3. there are several swims that are easy to get to, :D ,,that have produced but for some reason not at the ATC,,,thus the area is called the "DEAD ZONE", it has very little features in it,,,,,,,I will have a map of all the pegs like I did last year, and if you should draw a difficult one, and want to switch it with another team that is in the so called dead Zone, I guess that might work ????not sure need to really weigh all the options....that might not work, on second thought it will not,, :D cause if I allowed that, I'd have to allow other peg switches, and that would be deadly :D

The other option is this...... so far we have 46 teams, I have 50 pegs,,,,I could take those easy to get to pegs but "SO CALLED" non producers out of the draw, and if someone wanted to change for one of those, because of a reason of difficulties in walking, bad knees, etc ,etc have them in reserve....got to think about it > :D

I Want to be totally fair to everyone attending,,,,,worked real hard on giving the ATC a sterling reputation, and I don't want to do anything that might be construed or misconstrued, in a way that it was not intended !

Just when I thought I had all the bases covered !!! :D:D:D

I believe that if you move swims to an empty one you should not be able to do so until at least three hours after the event has started. Or maybe if you move then your results for that day are not counted - that way no one can move to the better swims that don't get drawn and take a big advantage.

Bottom line is I think if you get a swim then you should fish it unless there are serious problems in the swim itself (kayak polo, 400 canoes etc.), then the organisers (Neil etc.) can make a decision to move your team. I don't think the swim being to far from where you can park, or I have too much gear to carry that far is a viable excuse for moving swims.

As far as the so called "dead zone" - maybe that's where teams with walking too far should be put!!!!

Absolutely no way should teams be able to switch pegs wit other teams at will - it could and will lead to all sorts of issues

  4. My name is Dave and I live in San Francisco Bay Area.. Have been very involved in fishing my whole life but it seems like I have been overlooking the Carp the whole time!! I have lots of water around me with some exceptional carp in most lakes and creeks. I have caught a few by accident but I'm really interested in targeting them.

Not many folks around my area target Carp and finding specific tackle for them in any of the local bait shops is impossible. Can you guys reccomend a good set up to get started with. Any video's that are worth getting? thanks for any info. Also, if there are any experienced Carpers in the south bay (San Jose, Ca) that want to show a rookie the ins and outs I would be more than Happy to share my boat with them on the Ocean for other specie's. thanks!

    Dave

Dave - I am up in the North Bay and would be more tan happy to get together with you to carp fish a few spots. Would also love to go out for ocean species when the Salmon season starts :D

PM me with your numbers and we can chat.

    Cheers mate.

  5. It don't happen often but I'm with Paul on this one.

It's all well and good if you want to let the fish go but attacking the man who set up the ATC is shameful.

Me three - Neil's work for the CAG is superb, exemplary, excellent, non-stop, great and wonderful. To attack him is shameful and unecessary.

Remeber opinions are like assholes everyone has one

  6. This thread is a very good example of the diversity of our CAG members. Some good points and opinions have been shared by all who have responded to this post. The point that I'm trying to make is everyone believes their point is the best solution to deal with the offer that the TPWD has made to this organization. However well founded these opinions were, They are only self fulfilling and not in line with the Goals of CAG. in general. I had to sit and think for a while :D What are our goals really were. Are we a group that only promotes C&R, Or are we a group of specimen hunters that only give recognition to those who catch big fish. I wasn't sure were to find these answers so I looked under {about Cag} Being some what Illiterate and not the sharpest tack in the pack, The best understanding that I could come up with was, CAG was formed to promote carp fishing as a sport, Plain and simple. If this is our goal then why would you fight someone who was trying to put this sport in the for front? :D Would the loss of one fish hurt our sport? Or would it promote it? This is the question we all will have to ask ourselves at Austin this spring. Is it good for me, or is it good for CAG? THINK ABOUT IT <_< Herkel

Ray - I know it's not good for me, and I know it's not good for the carp.

If the the aim of the CAG is to promote carp fishing as a sport then show me how putting a fish in a tank does that more than showing people pictures of the recapture of the same fish several times at greater weights.

It's just plain wrong and I will say no more.

  7. Oh, and addressing the issue of reduced size in Town Lake, Is anyone willing to consider that this may be our fault?

When this trophy fishery was discovered, huge fish came out regulary. Of course, once word got out, the lake was fished hard for years after.

Loads of low protien foods like maiz and poor quality boilies have gone into that water. This type of feeding IMHO can be detremental to carp growth. European carp history has shown the effects of HNV boilies on carp size potential.

Are we poor stewards of the trophy fishery? I'm not convinced that this assessment is true but I do believe that it's a possibility.

It is a fact of life that when we first start catching carp from a new water the larger carp follow along almost immediately (this has happened on every lake I have fished in CA). As time goes on the larger carp do not get caught anywhere near as much and the average size of captured carp decreases. This does not mean that those bigger carp are dead or uncatchable they just avaoid anglers baits after a few captures. Some larger fish will continue to be captured but overall the average weight will steadily decrease - especially when fishing shorter sessions without preparation of baited areas.

Low quality/protien foods have no bearing on the weight reduction, what does have a bearing is the feeding/baiting pyramid.

Finally each capture of a carp inhibits its ability to grow as fast as previously - the more they are caught the slower they grow and for larger carp that already grow slowly this can mean coming to a virtual standstill growthwise.

Oh and by the way if I catch a record it's going back the same place as it came from so that another angler has the opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime - I would not even consider allowing it to be removed to some aquarium showcase even to help promote the sport, find other ways to do so. :D:D

  8. I think you may be correct Keith... I, for one, am bringing plenty of books to read with me just in case... :D

    -Marius

No books for me - I will keep trying all day, working the swim, finding alternate spots to put baits, recasting two rods off the baited area (in case I drop one on a hungry 40lbers nose). Second day last year I surrendered to the swim and quit - it made me feel so down to quit I just could not get into the fishing properly until the Tuesday of the TCC - then we got flooded out. The Carp Gods were trying to tell me something I think :D:D

  9. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't draw the peg that's 100 yds West of the First Street bridge in the park with the Stevie Ray Vaughn Statue. I drew this peg three years ago. I never seen so many sticks, rock's, frisbee's and tennis balls thrown in the water and the DOGS following right in to retreve them. They swam into my lines, set off my alarms and totally disrupted fishing most of the day. :D When I complained to their owners, I found out real quick, that the city fathers of Austin had bestowed that area of the park to them, to run their DOGS and I had no business fishing on their turf.

You could save yourself a lot of frustration and grief, by packing up your gear and heading to Emma Long for a good day of fishing. I will say the view of downtown Austin is very nice and the action and traffic that passes you by on the bike path is OUTSTANDING. :D

The peg under the First Street bridge is were Tommy Robinson caught his big carp Three years ago. I know because I weighed it. I believe, it's also where Scottie and his dad fished on the first day last year and caught most of their fish, that won the tournament. :D

I hope whoever set pegs this year, skips this spot, because it's gone to the DOGS.

If you pack up and leave SRV then you are doing the swim an injustice. There are lots of fish to be caught from this swim if you know what to do. There is a deep hole close in and shallower water down and across, giving access to area that fish will feed in, during a variety of conditions. Can be hard to catch them here, but with work it is very satisfying to pull out 3 or 4 thirties and 5 or 6 20's during the day.

Dogs, walkers, rocks, boats etc are a pain but the fish are used to it - it spooks the angler more than the fish. Drop some back leads in close and all can be avoided.

  10. On a pessimistic note I'd add that from 50 pegs this year, I'd estimate we'll have 10-15 blanks so bring entertainment with you :D

    -Marius

With all the noddies fishing this year you think it's only going to be 10-15 blanks. I think more likely 20-25 will blank at least one day. 15 may be more like the number of two day blanks.

  11. Mark, Just so everyone knows, Mark Reese is now a full fledged paid card carrying CAG member as of now :D {with out a voice} :D So I'll have to do all his quacking for him now :D So if anyone wants to start some chit I'll do my best to represent Mark on his behalf :D:D:D Oh and by the way, He is still my friend also :D Herkel

Mark should be back on here pretty soon shouldn't he. The rules, that Brian posted, state that the first ban is one week, second time long and third time complete banning from the forum.

So Mark should be back and I know he can quack all by himself. :0

  12. Just a straw poll for those who have been before:- Would like to know your top three choices of swim.

Personally I would love to fish the Bridge again, want to fish the Bamboo or Chicken swims, and then one of the swims nearer the top of the lake Eilers or similar). So one I have fished, one I know about and have never fished yet and one I have fished once unsuccessfully.

  13. Brewboy,

I guess getting familiar with a new site is one of the hurdles. But, I appreciate you honesty....its all in the feed back. Thats what I am after. Im here to answer any questions that you or anyone might have.

    Ken

Ken - I notice a couple of spelling mistakes - (bolded)

The competing anglers can Add, Update or Delete there profile information before and during the event.
You get SEVERAL WEEKS before the event starts so that all the competing anglers have enough time to add there profile information.

Plus when I uploaded a second picure it seemed to remove the first one.

Otherwise this is a great job. May talk to you about hosting the one for the Fall tournament out this way.
