  1. I think it's more like over a 1000lbs for the world record.......I saw a photo of some guys who had caught a rod caught sturgeon but I don't think it was from CALI?

Not according to this source who states on the page "Records provided courtesy of the International Game Fish Association, the record sanctioning and registering authority"

  2. Keith,

Do you fish for them much? I never did when I lived in CA. I hear they a tough to catch.

Generally have a few trips in January - March time frame up in San Pablo Bay (north end of THE Bay to non locals). Only had two trips this year as I was busy over in KS but did have one keeper size white (48-72 inches is the slot limit) that was released, two small greens and a golden. Where we fish is on the flats in 20-25 feet of water, usually after some good rains have pushed fresh water into the bay and moved out the bait robbers (crabs, kingfish, small stripers etc.). We then go out and drift around or motor real slow until we start spotting logs on the bottom on the fishfinder (the logs are sturgeon :D ). After that drop the anchor chuck the baits in and wait. Bites are very buffalo like - litttle tweaks and pulls and the rod tip vibrating - hard to spot in a boat moving on the drift, tide and winds. When we hook up though then you are talking - these things go vertical in all the shallow water and fight like crazy. Mostly we just bring them alonside the boat, measure them and remove the hooks before letting them swim off. Smaller ones we net sometimes.

    Pretty interesting rigs too...

My biggest is from down on the South Bay flats near Dumbarton - 107 inches played for nigh on 100 minutes in a 18 foot aluminium jon boat. great fun with two people and impressive seing 9 feet of sturgeon hauling itself almost completely out of the water.

Oh and one more thing - World Record - 468 lbs. Benicia, California (that's where all the big rivers - the San Joachim, and Sacramento - enter the Bay proper)

Then of course is the big one (over 60lb) Jules caught on carp gear from a lake we used to fish.

  3. Jeff

You making it down to Seal Beach this Sunday??

    Karl :D

Karl - If you go make sure you have the heavy gear - those bat rays will kill your arms. I had three on the 4th from Limantour beach up here, all three bottomed the 120lb Salters and all three took aver 45 minutes to land in low surf, low tide conditions (so not a lot of current for them to use). One was a big old warrior, half the tail missing and a shark bite as big as a basketball out of the wing.

    My arm still aches now!!!

  4. Funny you mention car, Matt...

No headlights for Steve or me, so he was taking "guess" pics, and none quite had me and the fish in the frame. Pulled the car up, and used the headlights...hence the wierd glow off my head!

Yeah, yeah, yeah - those in the know are aware of your talents with photoshop - nice glow effect to put us off looking at the actual fish.

  5. That's something I've noticed when watching video's from those small private fisheries..those pot bellied fish appear to have no fight at all, compared to the wild common's I'm used to.

Perhaps they just don't translate well to film, but if that's the case, the videographers really need to edit better!  As it is, they look like you say..fat sacks, with not much fight at all.

I've caught 30's and larger that would make those fights look ridiculous in comparison(a 30's class fish from Lake Michigan, or one of our rivers, is an amazing fighting machine...and would literaly tow one of those pot bellied things around all day, I bet.).

NOT a knock on the fish themselves, as they don't have much say in it..but am I off base?

As someone with over 25 of those fat Eurocarp over 40lb and 3 over 50lb I think I can say "Yep both you and Sask are offbase."

Like all large carp the fight is not a tear about the lake and wear myself out one. Much more of a huge weight slugging around on the end of the line.

  6. Rule # 882:

Never leave the lid to your bait buckets off at night.. or the racoons will feast on your mix.......

Hey the racoons round here take the lids of the buckets even if the are sealed down. I have to hang my buckets up to keep them safe.

  7. Lesson #1 - Carp fishing is nearly always best shared with friends..........

Lesson #2 - Be happy to catch, but be even happier for someone else to catch

Lesson #3 - Enjoy being there - that way if you blank you will still have enjoyed yourself, if you catch it's a big bonus

Lesson #666 - Never, ever let someone who has never been out of the country drive your 3 week old vehicle (or for that matter any vehicle) on any of the roads between Calais and Cassien (or for that matter any of the roads in Europe) :D:D:D

  8. Keith,

Have you ever fished out in Folsom Lake in Sacramento? I lived right by there a few years ago. Never fished it though.

    Kent

Kent - I have been and checked it out a few times, definitely carpy areas, but unfortunately full of yahoos with jet-ski's, boats, wakeboards, windsurtfers and every other form of boat traffic known to man. Couple that with the fact that the carpy areas are really only accessible by boat and the lack of decent spots to do overnight sessions means that I have never been motivated enough to go over and try fishing for them.

  9. Yep now I can and thanks, Better than trying to organise My junk on a sloppy greasy muddy notepad. I think I might put it in a plastic folder and use those eraseable markers so I can transfer info when I get home. My other idea was a micro recorder, but it may appear a bit like star trek on the bankside and they already think I'm nuts fishing for carp lol.

Most cellphones now have the ability to record 30 second chunks of voice. Use that and people just think you are on the phone after each fish.

  10. When I got deep into offshore fishing, I found that the palomar knot will not work in long fights at full drag pressure.  We started calling it the catch and release knot.  The knot continues to tighten under this kind of pressure and will cause failure.

Palomar is a strangulation knot - thats why it breaks the more pressure put on it.
