  1. I use what you guys call the Trilene knot (tucked half bloodknot) for nylon and the Clinch knot for braid. Trilene knots will cut into themselves with braided lines.

I use a 4 turn water knot for tying shock/snag leaders at home or a double clinch know for tying them on the bank. The only other knot I use is the knotless knot for tying hooks when I use that method.

  2. Doc,

You keep as good a set of records as anyone in CAG.  In fact, aren't you official or something?

Do you believe the 49 (fortynine) inch part of the 54 (fiftyfour) pound carp story?

Man, that's a long fish, even for Phone.

    Phone

Phone - it was a grassie, considerably longer that commons for their weight

  3. You know, it's probably a good idea to expand a bit on this question.  Remember we are talking the entire United States!

Some notable exceptions, individual ponds, that would be worth talking about.  Let me start the list.

The Washington DC CAG event (odd swim)

Idaho  (couple lakes with only mirrors all over 30)

Mississippi River (the thrill of a run is that you have no idea for at least a few seconds)

Toledo Bend LA/TX  (home to the largest carp in North America)

    and, of course, my home water;

The Missouri River  (no longer the muddy Mo)

    Phone

You forgot the Colorado and the Columbia rivers Phone.

  4. Ok guys, now that one is new for me. I've fished carp for more than 20 years, but in Europe I just never heard that term I guess. I've heard about Israeli carp here in Mexico, but I somehow never really linked them to mirrors. What is the difference between a 'Israeli' mirror and a 'normal' mirror?  :D

Generally very high backed and darker colouration to the fins - normally mirror scaling (never seen a common scaling on one) and very rarely fully scaled.

  5. Dale, great fish, congrats!

Same story here, for me and my dad (both our common PB's from the lake). Mine was after a 2,100 mile drive there back in 2002, and was just under 45lbs. Also managed a couple other low 40's from the lake (which has been very, very good to me to say the least!)...

Dad's was 41-8 from last year, he also got a 40+ this year.

Scott - I always forget your PB is from Towne too.

And don't forget that Vaughn's 41lb 8oz fish from last year was Karl's 41lb 4oz new PB this year.

  6. didn't need much to get a PB at Town during the TCC. Previous PB was a teen back in NC. Anyway, not only did I establish a new PB while on Town with a 34/11, I broke that 10 minutes later with a 36/1. I know this will not stay my PB, but I have a feeling it may be hard to beat. Possibly next year on Town. BullCarp

Hey Dennis - good to see you here.

  7. Add me to that short list  Keith....    :D

I'm jinxed when outside the Mid Atlantic.. :D

Phil - if I break my PB at Towne I owe several people bottles of vodka. :D:D

In fact if I break my PB I in the US I will buy the vodka/beer/wine for anyone who wants to come over and celebrate with me.

Karl - I want that bad boy down your way :D:D:D

  8. I don't know Jerome, could be!

I agree Pat - the colouration is the same, and the convex curve of the lower lobe of the tail is a very big give away. I overlaid the tails using Adobe and they are as close as possible given the angles are slightly different. Definitely not the same fish as my 58 from last year either as that was a monster fattie rather than a big framed fish.

Anyone else have pictures of this fish or other large buffs from Towne please post them up.

  9. Does anyone have pictures of Mirek's 62lber buff from the first day of the ATC? i ould like to compare it to some of the other biggies (Bait Boat Charlie's from a few years back, Donnie's from last year and mine from last year too) and see if is one I recognize.

  10. just cought me in a odd handeling pose no abuse to that beauty

marcus, didn't you read what he posted!! He said he knew that wasn't the way to handle the fish, He knew he would catch flack, I think he was converted before he posted that photo. So you are preaching to the saved.

    Mickey and Jim :D

    Definitely a mirror carp

  11. Lou / Phil ..

Is this swim the stretch I read about elsewhere (oz's post I think) where the organizers paid Austin for swims free of canoers / swim ropes / etc or was this an additional problem???  :D

What a rough situation. Nobodys fault but yet a pity because I can really feel for you guys knowing how PISSED you musta been. At least some of em were good looking but still, you guys musta been steaming.

Seems no matter how organized an event, things still go way wrong. Murphys Law.  :D

But glad to see you guys managed some nice fish.

So were all the outfits recovered????????

PS - What was the attraction to your particlar swim???? never been to Towne but the lake looks large. Was the canoe / boat rental / launch right there???? Musta been because it couldnt have been your good looks.  :D  :D

    i think someone is a wee bit jealous.  :D  :D  :D  :D

Rob - this was one of three areas badly affected by boating. Louis and Phil's spot was at the mouth of Barton Creek, up the creek is the largest boat rental place on the whole lake. Scot and his Dad had a swim in the notorious 'Dead Zone' that was affected by the lines of bouys set up for a regatta. Finally one other area (where Brian and Zach fished the second day) had a Kayak Water Polo event happening on the Saturday (along with the associated kayak spectators). Take these issues and the fact that some regularly good pegs did not produce and a lot of teams either blanked or went home with the odd one or two fish.

None of the above would put me off fishing the event again and I believe the same to be true for the vast majority of teams/anglers.

  12. despite this swim's shortcomings, we had a great time. before any of the events started i told scott, marius and some others not to get too caught up if things dont go right. i meant it. i always say things like that, but no one takes me seriously because i have done well at some tournaments lately. finally i am getting some street cred. :D  I always try to make sure i enjoy myself no matter what. that is why i go to these things.

Ditto this Louis - Phil and I pulled a duff one the first day and an even worse one the second day - for 3 hours I had no more than one rod in the water and for no more than 10 minutes - fast as I got a second one in a boat of some description would trash one of the lines, at one point I had to respool two rods (thank goodness for spare spools aleady loaded). In the end we quit trying to fish and went and blanked elsewhere. So in the last 3 years I have had one good swim out of six - that's why it's called the luck of the draw

besides, I truely don't think neil jackie, jason, and everyone else could  have done a better job. not possible.  there is only so many variables a person can juggle.

Ditto this as well Louis - since Neil took the reins on this event it has become better and better. Some suggestions were made post event to try and alleviate the issues and I know Neil and Co will be discussing them for next years event

austin is a cross between a californian grass eating hippy community and a liberal commy northeastern one.  they have the biggest whole foods store in the world.  :D

Now you know why I like the place so much

  13. Not much to report so far today other than Mirek catching a certified new lake record smallmouth buffalo of 62lb 8oz.

Phil and I hauled at the 360 yesterday with twelve 20s fron 22 to 29 and a 33 along with about 20 smaller ones between 10 and 18

Just heard that someone up near the 1st street bridge has had a 40
