  1. After some conversations with Rick (one of the TX State Chairs) during the week Kristi and I decided to get together and fish in downtown Fort Worth on Sunday with Rick.

Friday evening Brid called and during our conversation he decided he would come visit over the weekend to get out of Austin for a while.

Saturday Kristi and I spent two hours baiting up the spot we had decided on with Rick (via PM and telephone conversations). We put in a whole 5 gallon bucket of mixed pellets (alfalfa, range cube and small diameter range pellets) and four gallons of maize that had been cooked and soaked in my special flavour mix. The bait was spread evenly about the swim with no heavy concentrations anywhere. By the time we got home Brid had arrived from Austin and we set about getting bait mixed up for the next morning. Rick sent a text saying he would be there around 8:00 which suited us as it meant we would not have to get up early.

Sunday morning came and we made coffee, loaded up the baits, the kid, the dog and us into the Jeep and set off. We arrived at 8:00ish to see Rick set up in the middle of the section. After a coin toss (with Brids wooden nickel) we took the left hand side of the section and Brid took the right. We set about getting the gear out and within a few minutes I had one rod out there fishing, followed by two more in short succession. I set up the net then started on the second pod and rods, by the time I had those set up the Delkim on the first rod I had put out was bleeping away in need of some attention. The fish turned out to be a little carp of maybe 4 or 5 lb with a badly damaged mouth (healed up from a previous capture) but at least it was a start to the day. After this the left most of the rods kept giving short pulls (like small buffalo) but nothing strong enough to hit. While I was standing by this rod the right had one on the same pod took off and another carp came to the net, this one a little bigger at around 8 or 9lb.

The right hand pod now started to get some attention from the same sort of pulls and bounces, one with enough indication that I piccked up the rod and connected with a turtle, ARGHHHH. The wee beastie was unhooked and tipped back in the water with no ceremony LOL :). This prompted me to rebait all the rods starting on the right and working my way left. As I got to the left hand pod the right hand rod tore off like a proper carp this one ended up being 13lb and change. We let her swim off without a picture and I carried on the rebaiting excercise. After putting the same rod back out I, started on the middle rod and got that back out and had just put the hanger back on the line when the left hand rod screamed in my ear. I picked up this one and the fish came out of the water splashing and jumping like a wimp mouth bass. It looked to be a largish fish based on the amount of water it was moving, it also looked buff-like in its colouration. After some crazy runs under and over the other five lines the fish was still thrashing the water to a foam but was in the net at the first try - thank you Kristi - a nice clean 30lb buffalo.

I saw a few more buffs rolling out in front so modified the rigs a little more to see if I could get another one. All this did was get a few more carp picking up the bait as shortly afterwards I picked up yet another carp - this on at 16lb 4oz.

Up to this point Rick had hooked and lost a buffalo and a carp and Brid had had a couple of short runs but nothing to hook into. Chad came to visit and hung out for about 45 minute, before he left he said he would fish the same spot with his buddy the next day.

I kept up the regular rebaiting - because of the turtles and because I was using walnut sized packs around the hook so wanted to keep getting the bait out into the swim, however the bite slowed down with nothing really happening for a couple of hours. I went to chat with Brid and Rick for a little bit and had just decided to go back to rebait when Kristi jumped up and picked up one of her rods. I walked down to give her a hand as the rods were pretty tight and it was easy to get the fish tangled in the other lines. Kristi played the fish carefully having lost the last two she had hooked two weeks ago and I eventually slipped the net under the carp and we weighed it out at 16lb 12oz - biggest carp of the day.

The carp came on the feed for us after this and we landed 3 more high singles and a low double before we ran out of bait for the day. Only one of note was a 10lbish carp with only one eye.

The last one of the day had a huge chunk out of it around the vent like it had been chomped on by a snapping turtle very recently. Rick did not get another bite all day and Brid ended up with a buffalo of 35lb+ which he put back in without pictures.

All in all a good day of fishing in downtown Fort Worth - we will definitely be back for more when we get another chance....... Still trying to find somewhere with bigger carp locally.

  2. Kristi and I fished again this Sunday - same lake, but a different spot. The weather was horrible - cold, damp, windy - not at all like last week. Water temperature was OK though.

We went armed with a different mix this week, in an attempt to keep the turtles off the bait.

Within minutes of the fourth rod being set on it bankstick the first one went tearing off - ended up being a low teen fatty (about two weeks away from spawning) for me. The next fish came to the same rod about an hour later and this one was Kristi's, again another low teener but this time a male, Kristi's first carp this year – mainly due to her breast cancer surgery . Within 15 minutes of putting the rod back out off it went again this time with a high single for me.

With it being cold Kristi had decided that she would not get another one until we got to 5 altogether. I had been using my light (1.25lb TC) barbel rod as a rover casting at bubble patches and hoping they weren’t turtles LOL. Eventually this rod went tearing off and on picking it up I knew it was not a small fish. After a protracted fight Kristi slide the net under a great looking carp that I guessed was a low twenty – I was wrong it went 25lb 4oz on the button – a new PB on that rod upping it from the 21lber on the river at the end of last year; we took some pictures with the iPhones as the cold was affecting the Canon’s batteries and slipped her back to fight another day. This one was another female that was getting fat but not ready to spawn yet……

Now we had a wait as the weather started to turn a little worse, with drizzle blowing across the lake and the water steaming from the cold air. I started to feel some spots of rain so packed up some of the stuff to put in the car and keep out of the rain. As the rain started to come a little heavier I picked up the chairs and walked them over to the car, right as I arrived there one of the Delkims started singing out and I ran back across the grass picked up the rod and leant into a fast moving fish. I thought at first it was another low double as it turned immediately and ran towards me, however once it got close it acted a little larger, powering off with some weight. We did see it swirl a couple of times and I noticed it was a ghostie, well the rain continued and the carp did not give up so we started to get a little damp, but eventually Kristi slipped the net under the beauty and we did the deed with the weight sling, iPhones and slipped him back – not a PB ghostie for me but still a great fish at 21lb 12oz.

After this I fished on until about 4:00, with Kristi warming and drying in the car, but no more bites were forthcoming – I guess five fish in six hours is OK, if the rain had not come or the weather had warmed a few more degrees who knows what we might have caught.

I wish there were some spots closer to me that had this stamp of carp in although the drive is not too bad.

  3. Kristi, Adam and I had a go at one of the Fort Worth lakes we have been told about on Sunday (last official day of winter).

Even though the weather looked good the fish did not co-operate very much we had three fish on and only two landed - an 11lb 8oz for Adam, Kristi's fish dropped off for no apparent reason and mine was this 27lb even.

Background blanked out to protect the water.

  4. Thank you Jerome for organizing this FFF - I am most surprised to win with a 19lb 12oz carp, I thought at least one 20lber might come out but given the countrywide conditions I suppose it was going to be a stretch.

Just a very small selection from over 4500 photographs Kristi and I have taken this year.

I originally avoided the fishing pictures as there were just too many to choose from but then decided that the following two needed inclusion as Adam and Kristi both had new PB's this year......

    Adam's PB 21lb 12oz

    post-42-1231349125.jpg

    Kristi's PB 24lb 10oz

  6. Huh? B)

Well, judging by the length of the 4+lber, I'd guess the net to be 24" across (since a 4+lber is generally 21-22"). Considering the other fish is about 7-8" longer on each side, I'd guess it to be in the 39" range.

Though the fish is lean in shape, it does appear to have a wide back and some weight to it. I doubt 30lbs, but 27-29lbs is reasonable for such a length. Hence my guess....

    Who won?

So you are saying that you think 14-16 inches of the bigger fish is outside the net?

  8. There are a few pictures of these butterfly commons on the forum - Karl caught one last year I think, and one of the lakes out west here has about one in every eight like that. They are hybrids between butterfly koi, fantails, goldfish and common carp.
