  1. Hey!!

I stuck up for you guys and gals for whom carp fishing is your way of life! Some newspaper in Alaska was trashing on carp fishing. Return the favor and show us some love and vote for Waddington...you will be validating the sport of carp angling. Here's the blurb:

PATHETIC . . . Homer and Seward both made it into the finals of the World Fishing Network's "Ultimate Fishing Town USA" competition mentioned here a few weeks ago. So now they're among 20 towns vying for the title and $25,000 plus lots of tourist-attracting publicity.

But here's the deal: Some godforsaken place in New York called Waddington got more than 30,000 votes to Homer's 5,700 and Seward's 4,900. How sad is that? Waddington bills itself as "Carp Capital of the World." Carp? They must be joking. Are carp even real fish? Grilled carp? Smoked carp? Yeech. Death to carp!

Darlings, we must stop this outrage.

    Here's My response and follow-up:

If you knew anything at all about fishing, Alaska Ear, you'd know that carp are the world's most popular game fish. They aren't fished for food. They are fished for fun and the challenge. The fish are caught, and then released back into the river. Anglers from all over the world come to the St. Lawrence River and our "godforsaken" town of Waddington. And they spend 10s of thousands of dollars in fishing equipment and travel expenses--per angler--to fish our waters. And we aren't all about carp, anyway. We have almost any type of freshwater game fish you'd want, and if you're hungry, we've got the pan fish, too. Broaden your horizons, AE...its amazing what goes on outside of your frozen tundra. And if you want to throw barbs, here's one: America's most popular game fish, the largemouth bass, is found in every state. Except Alaska.

.... and just to clarify..some people do fish carp for food. but for most anglers, carp are revered as the hardest fighting freshwater game fish. don't knock it til you try it. :)

CLICK HERE VOTE FOR WADDINGTON and vote EVERY DAY til MAY 31 :yourock:

you tell em Deanna!!! take no prisoners!!

  2. The 15th annual DC fish in was a fun time and even with a few of glitches thrown in by mother nature a good time was had by all and in the end a good number of fish were caught. The day started off with haines point being closed due to high water so we dispersed with some fishing the river side and others heading over to the basin until the water subsided a bit. we set up at the basin and while we didnt catch we were treated to one of the fun things about fishing in dc...you never know what your gonna see. That mornings treat was a parade of mounted police officers in town for National police week , held in DC every year . We also met Joon a local fisherman who is part of a group of korean pole anglers who now fish the basin using asian style whips. he showed us what and how they do what they do and it was neat to see this style of fishing in person rather than just pictures( some of which were posted on the forum a week or so ago.) the tide started to go down so around 1015 we made our way back to haines point after hearing it had been opened up. The tide was still high and fishing was unfortunately a bit slow. We were however to mingle and talk and meet new member Moon and his cousin ...two local anglers. I want to thank Moon for his very generous provision of Tandoori chicken and hot dogs and all the fixins for lunch . it was both delicious and appreciated by all who were there. as you may have read in some of the other posts laurence started off the fishing with the first capture of "screwface" which was the fist of 4 captures during the event. Most of the day was spent listening to craig bellyacheing :D about me scheduling the fish in on days when the fish dont bite :D . he then was treated to screwface and ended up splitting the big fish pot with laurence first time in dc fish in history that a 12lbr was the big fish( during contest hours 11-5) it wasnt till after 5 that the fish started to bite mike smith caught screwface at about 515 530 had it been a bit earlier it would have been a 3 way split. i caught a little fish and as craig had posted the water started to rise again so i could just slide it under the railing and release it no net necessary. A little later i did manage to catch a new pb ghostie not only a pb but my first ghostie ever at 26.11. I ended up catching three fish on saturday and others also caught a few more towards the end of the afternoon. Matt had gone into baltimore the day before and picked up some delicous fresh made polish sausage from sophias sausage emporium :D and they were dispatched to the grill , paired up with mrs. hoppys (petra) potato salad there were smiles and full stomachs at haines point saturday night.

there were quite a number of other species caught too during the day as some folks were micro jigging catching herring, totally cool looking needle fish(post pics please ) , small stripers, a snakehead, fat blue gills, stewart caught his first needle fish and his first crappie. another burst of rain and thunder sent us packing up at around 10 pm...

  5. Mike, the feeding of carp across the country at public docks, marinas is like apple pie and chevrolet . classic summertime things to do with the family. sure some people will say its gross but if you have ever seen the faces of the kids feeding the fish , you would have another opinion. not to mention the faces of adults. pure glee and often amazement and awe. Some places feed bread, some feed popcorn , most marinas will sell 50 cent bags of dogfood for the fish to eat. and go thru 100's of pounds during a summer. at raystown lake also in PA you can hand feed forty pound commons and 30 plus pound mirrors. when we go camping there it is tradition that before we leave we all go to the marina and feed the fish, i love it each and everytime.
