  1. The Okuma is a great starter reel as well as the Mad Dragon. I have seen them catch plenty of carp and are great rods for the money. I have no experience with the Black Phantom so I cannot comment on it. Strong line (12-15lb test), strong hooks, a couple 1-3 ounce sinkers (egg or no roll), some type of mat, and a decent net that is not made from the knotted nylon (use a fine mesh or rubberized) and you have all the gear you need. No need for alarms or a pod until you figure out exactly what you need. A couple bank sticks and you'll be set. Learning to tie your own rigs is another thing to learn. The hair rig is quick and easy to tie. Check out Brian Wingard's Youtube videos for all sorts of great information. You have a lot of good people in MI that can help you out as well.

Welcome to the forum and the addiction!

  2. Here are a couple photos from a personal CAG archive. The newspaper is dated 1998 we were doing a carp demo at riverfest in Moline Illinois. The set of three photos are from the 2000 CCC, I'm on the rod with Tommy Riley coaching. That led to my first 30+. The other two are from Ping Tom Park in Chicago during some prefishing before the 2000 CCC. Then a classic picture of Bud Yancey netting a fish for a girl.

  3. Crab orchard holds the (bow) state record for common carp 38.2lbs and grass carp 53.13lbs big lake with lots of potential. It's one I've been eyeing for a while but never made the long drive from Chicago when I was living there last. I may stop for a good session on my way back from California next fall.

  4. There's a good group of guys that fish Joliet all the time but you just caught them at the end of their tournament season. Definitely catch up with them when it starts to warm up or even for the FFF, first fish foley, as some fish it in the same part of the river. I'm originally from the Peoria area but have fish all over Illinois and will be back next August from a short stint in California. Welcome to the club and feel free to ask questions or pm me if you need anything

  5. Carp fishing in the US is in its infancy. They have been looked upon as h a horrible species that needs to be taken out of the water and killed. That's the attitude of the general populace. Most of them gave been taught for generations that they serve no purpose and are not a sport fish. That's why there is poor fish care when compared to European standards. I myself have been letting people know about nets and mats since the early 90's and it's a long slow process. The exposure level is not high enough for a normal person to know how we "proper" carp anglers handle them. It starts with education and that's our responsibility to help them learn. I didn't want to imply you were being mean or condescending, just that Americans as a whole don't understand it on the level we do.

  6. Thank you. While I have all the euro gear I don't understand the "proper kit" that people think they have to have. That's one thing that I believe could turn someone off because they will think if they don't have alarms, pods. Long rods, etc... then they can't catch carp. I always stress to new comers to get a safe net and something for a mat or find some soft grass just for safe handling. :)
