I also use short rigs, maybe 2" so the puff is barely sticking out of the pack. The puff doesn't float off the bottom like a popup.
-
If they are swimming toward that rig they can easily see the bend I'm the hook. Imagine what it would look like if that boilie was on the hook, how much of the hook would it cover? I'll have to shoot a video or take some pics this spring so you can see what I'm talking about.
-
How is a fully exposed hook more invisible than a covered hook? If you put a big puff in the bend of the hook the eye and the point face down. The carp sees the rig from above and doesn't see the hook at all.
-
Pack around the oatball is better A lot of times the rigs get moved around before they get picked up so the hook would become exposed. I've spent a lot of time watching Jerome's videos and it's amazing how much the rigs get moved around and ejected.
-
I'll have to give that a try this spring. The puff will hide the hook better, not sure if that will matter.
-
Blowback rigs are good but I still think I get better hookups with the puff rigs. This past spring I was using 2s and 4s with oat balls next to my puff rigs with 1/0s and lost more than twice as many fish on the oat ball rigs. Glugs are good too but the flavor soaks into the puff and lasts a lot longer especially in heavy current. I haven't had a problem with the puffs coming off the hook because of nuciance fish. I've had baits in the water for 1-3 hours getting bumped by cats and crabs before I get a run.

Difference between popup boilies and puffs: puffs are softer, you can use any kind of flavoring on a puff making it much easier and quicker when you want to experiment with different flavors, puffs are fished on the hook which hides the hook, boilies are fished on a hair making them eisier to eject because the boilie pulls the hook out shaft first, in most cases boilies are fished on smaller hooks which also makes them easier to eject, and you get more hook pulls and bent hooks with the smaller sized hooks, puffs are a lot cheaper and you don't have to waste time making them, and puffs catch more carp than boilies.

Oops, can't say #### on this site, sorry guys. These videos are much better than the poop that's on WFN.
-
These videos are much more entertaining than most of the ####ty fishing shows on TV.

Can't wait for the spring trip!

Man, Robert Downey Jr is getting old Thanks Mark!

I could prebait the spot the "US Record" came from, though I'll warn you she hasn't taken a boilie yet
-
How about a Rebel, Mario, Saxmatt fishin this May? I'll bring the Yuengling.
-
I caught a longer fish this winter, but it took a 10" dead fallfish off the bottom
-
Dude, that fish in your avatar eats anything. Even Eurocrap.
I must admit, I caught that fish live lining a tench with a 5/0 circle hook through its dorsal.

invite team packbait to the cag big 4.
I fished for Team Packbait 2 years ago at balwinsville. I was a Packbait newbie back then but learned a lot in 1 week from Tom, and have continued learning these past few years. I still have a lot to learn but I'm happy with my results these past few years in the CAG Big 4

Method feeders have their place.
now master packer I have a question for yea. Now you always pack your pack around your pickup. But if you use a 3oz lead or more the pack will fall apart on the cast.
now your fishing a river that needs at least 3oz. What do you do?
Hey wait a minute I think a method feeder would work FANTASTIC.
basically anything you could buy from any carp tackle website is junk to you right master packer?
so if its not barrel sinkers, swivels or 1/0 hooks, they are not paylake proper. So you dont think any euro product is convenient or useful? Euro gear is the best quality stuff I ever used in my life. I seriously laugh at tackle in US fishing stores(cabelas, bass pro, gander mountain). You know why? Its low quality stuff.(kid stuff)
question what kind of scales and carp care products do you own? What kind of netting do you use?
I fish a big tidal river with 3oz+ leads and don't have a problem with my bait coming off the puff on a cast, even at 50-100 yards. You also don't need good gear to catch big carp and numbers of carp, you need good bait, a good spot, and free time. As far as carp care, I use a big metal frame net that one of my Brit friends gave me (don't like those expensive flimsy euro nets especially when I'm by myself), with a resistance tackle mesh that my Portuguese friend gave me, and an air mattress meant for humans because I've caught carp with waistlines bigger than some of the people commenting on this thread.

They wouldn't tear apart a grits ball anyway because a proper grits pack breaks down in a matter of seconds before they can even get to it

Now here's the deal:
- Most flavors do absolutely nothing that could be even closely described as to "trigger a strike". Again, wait for the next NACA.
- Many of the substances used on a pick up fail to do what the angler hopes it will do. Only very few really make a difference. Lots of fairy tails going on here. Key is to figure out which attractors really work.
- But when using a packbait around the hook, the fish are just sucking up particles. The puff just happens to be in the middle of it. Trigger a strike eh?
Mario, I've experimented with hundereds of different flavors and the flavor of the pickup definitely makes a difference. I fish 3 rods with the same pack and different flavored pickups and often you'll only get runs on 1 flavor, even if you switch it from left rod to right, middle etc...you said it yourself, "Only very few really make a difference." The best carp anglers, and I would include you and Tom in that category, are the ones who figured out which flavors really make a difference. To say fish just happen to suck up a puff because it's in the middle of a pile of particles is just wrong. A bad flavor can send the fish out of your swim, but the right flavor is like the cherry on top of the sundae. The difference between anglers like Tom and the less experienced ones is Tom has put in more time than most figuring out what flavors really make a difference in specific conditions. He doesn't "just happen" to be luckier than the other anglers he fishes next to.

I suggest you start ice fishing!

This isn't a carp report but I thought it would be cool to post. Back in August I posted a carp report and included a couple pictures from a muskie trip. http://www.carpanglersgroup.com/forum/index.php?/topic/51971-3-trips-2-30s-1-pb-and-toothy-critters/ I went ice fishing at the spot twice in the past week and yesterday I recaptured the tiger muskie from my post in August! This time she hit a 14" live sucker. In the original pic you can see there was some bad fin damage from a previous capture, and when I caught her yesterday the fins looked much better. I had no idea the fins could regenerate that well or that quickly. Pretty cool!

For all the doubters. Just got off the phone with matt(the one who caught the 53) and he said his and mine are the same fish
Don sent me a pic of the other side of his 50. I won't post the whole pic because Donald didn't give me permission but I'll post a cropped photo comparing the scale pattern of his to mine by the gill plate. Not 100% sure but it looks pretty close.
Don's fish

The cool thing is it's a different fish from the ones posted on this site so far.
