  1. Nice job! After seeing that pike bait I'm going to have to clean out the bait tank and get it up and running. I need to load it up with suckers and goldens for ice season! Float fishing is a blast, you catch so many different species. I witnessed Attila catch 19 different species in 1 day with the long rod and whip rod.

  2. Congrats on nice carp and the muskie. Yes, it is a fish of 10,000 casts. I have heard of grown men crying when the get a follow up to the boat and then the fish turns away. One trick guides use is to swim the lure in a figure 8 pattern next to the boat. Nothing like getting a hit on three feet of line.

That's how they both hit. The first one swam under the boat and darted out and nailed my lure on the 3rd figure 8, then it jumped completely out of the water. They don't fight as hard as carp but the strike is intense!

  3. I haven't been fishing much this summer because I've been playing a lot of gigs, but I was able to sneak out 3 times this past month and each trip produced some memorable fish. For the first trip I met my buddy Chris at a local spot for a half day. I didn't expect much because we didn't prebait but it ended up being a productive morning. We ended up with around 8 fish in a few hours and I got a 33 and a 23.5. Most of the fish were caught on puffs and oat pack.

In the spirit of shark week I figured I'd include a report with some teeth. Last week I went for the closest thing we have to sharks in freshwater...muskie. I've targeted muskie through the ice a bunch of times but I've never targeted them in open water. I got an invite to fish on my buddy Mark's boat on Thursday and I couldn't pass it up. We hit a lake that has pure strain muskie and tiger muskie, and with the front moving through they were in the mood to feed. We had about 15 fish follow our baits and I ended up getting a tiger and a pure strain in the same day, both around 35". Guess they're not the fish of 10,000 casts! Both fish followed my trout pattern jerk bait right up to the boat and slammed the lure when I did the figure 8 at the side of the boat. What a blast! I might have a new addiction.

I wasn't planning on fishing the day of trip number 3 because I had a gig 2 hours away that night and wouldn't be back until 5am, so I figured I should sleep in and relax all day. Lukasz had invited me out the day before and when I woke up around 11 I saw he was catching some fish. He was only 10 minutes from my house and fishing by himself so I decided to throw the gear in the car and stop by for a few hours. I got there a little after 1pm and I'm glad I showed up when I did. The day before I told him to catch a 50 and when I showed up he had over 50 pounds of fish on the mat, a low 20 and a new PB and first 30 at 32lbs! We shot some quick pics and got the fish back in the water. I only fished for a few hours and caught 3 small ones, Lukasz caught 1 more. Glad I was there to see his PB!

  4. Big males in the 15-30lb range will try to rip your arms off, especially in the spring. Try bigger hooks and keep the pressure on them if you want less hook pulls. I've been fishing 1 or 1/0 hooks and get very few hook pulls. I'll still downsize to strong 4s or even 6s if they are being finicky and smaller baits are working better. I always miss and lose more fish when I do that though, but if they're shying away from the big stuff it's worth it.

  5. Great article Dean, very thorough. I've spent thousands of hours fishing tidal rivers and you covered pretty much everything. Take these tips and spend a lot of time figuring out where they are at different times of year, how they set up around spots at different tides, what flavors and bait they want at specific water temps, and like Dean said...USE HEAVY GEAR! Learn the water, put in the time and you will be rewarded.

  6. Congrats to everyone! Great job on placing 1st Adam, you worked for it! Thanks to all who helped run the tourney too. I had a fun but disappointing month. The first week was good for me and then the rest of the month I had to deal with multiple rain storms turning the rivers to mud, car problems, and then the spawn. The first weekend was the best part of the month for me. It was great hanging out with some good friends, old and new, and seeing Mike land an unexpected near 50 grasser was definitely the highlight. Hopefully the weather and the fish will cooperate next year and I'll get my 60!
