  1. It was a Pretty Common Monday

When Max, Tim “Cool Dad” Gill, Jim “Hatman” Hatter, Randy “Cowboy” Crofts and I left Georgia early this morning we all had grass in our eyes. We were heading west to a very popular source of large Grass Carp in hopes of catching a few and possibly upping our PB’s (Personal Bests). As it turned out it was a pretty Common Monday. Why? I thought you’d never ask!

Rather than catch Grass Carp (White Amur) today we caught four pretty Common Carp instead! After proudly displaying his patented Lash LaRue Rod Holder, “Cowboy” Crofts soon roped some Gold and tied him to the mat!!

Jim “Hatman” Hatter soon countered the Cowboy by bringing in not only one Common but two including a pretty dark fish caught toward the end of the day.

In between the second and fourth fish of the day the Ol Captain himself struck gold and soon struck this classic pose.

It was a great day beginning with the Shoney’s Breakfast Bar in downtown Oxford, Alabama. We were joined by several guests including Ralph and Richard Haywood who stopped by to break bread and stayed to find out why this Carpin’ thang is so contagious! It is so hard to believe that these two twins are 140 years old! Not only are they a joy to be around, they are two of the finest men to ever walk in Alabama shoe leather!

Steve Glisan also came to see us today. Steve wanted to find out more about baits and was particularly interested in the concept of Lick & Release!!! As always, the Ultimate Carp Hound put on an L&R clinic that was second to none!

Folks, it was a wonderful day! We talked baits, politics and fishing techniques. Max even showed our guests that there is indeed more than one use for a chair’s cupholder.

  2. A Few Photos from Morgan Falls Dam

I didn’t have time last night to do a story but several “Firsts” occurred yesterday below the Morgan Falls Dam in Sandy Springs, Georgia:

It was a beautiful day. Stay tuned as the Crew and I head west to Alabama in the morning in hot pursuit of some Monster Grass Carp!! Spring seems to have sprung here in Georgia and for me & the Ultimate Carp Hound, it is Game On!!

    Come see us!!

  3. Thanks for the story and the pix. Allatoona Lake isn't too far from mi casa. Keep me informed of your trips and I'll help storm the beachhead.

Just checked the map and it's about 90 miles. Piece of cake!

Edit: I'll be sure to bring some treats for you-know-who (it's not Big Bird or Cool Dad Tim).

FYI: Check out Tanyard Creek Road, Acworth, Georgia. There is a day use area and boat ramp on one side of the road. On the other side is the ol beach area where we fish. It is on the Interstate Side. The beach hasn't been used for 8-10 years.

  4. Our plan was to follow up on a couple of water level tips that were shared with us recently concerning the old beach area on Tanyard Creek Road. The Carp Hound and I decided to go a step further this morning and to do a little Re-Con mission of our very own. We had done one once before but after noticing the fire in his eyes this morning I knew Maximus Relaximus (The Ultimate Carp Hound) was more than ready to storm the beach at Tanyard! In fact, he wasn’t going to be denied!

    TanyardMarch6003_zpsb58d1a1e.jpg

We had checked our suggested site for Allatoona water levels http://allatoona.uslakes.info/Level.asp and knowing that we were still 8 ½ feet or so from full pool we knew in our hearts that we wouldn’t be seeing a whole lot of water off the beach today. But (change of direction) we were not going to miss a chance on doing a bit of walking and looking around.

Upon arrival we noticed immediately that there was water in the channel of the creek that runs under the interstate and then under Tanyard Creek Road but as of Thursday March 6,2013, that was it!

    TanyardMarch6045_zps5f262003.jpg

    TanyardMarch6030_zps6b108ba5.jpg

Noticing that the perimeter of the area was fairly clear, we decided to explore the beach side all the way to the Interstate if possible and return to Tanyard road by walking back along the creek bed.

It wasn’t long until Max was hot on the trail and had clearly taken the lead.

    TanyardMarch6017_zpsb22d0c5e.jpg

As we walked along the bank we quickly realized that others had been doing a little walking as well. After a brief sniff or two, the Carp Hound proceeded toward the culvert that goes under the interstate.

    TanyardMarch6019_zps93da747f.jpg

    TanyardMarch6022_zps25bc6a26.jpg

We stopped and looked back a time or two just to get a perspective and to see the lay of the land. It amazes me that in less than a month this area will be completely covered with water and soon thereafter it will be teaming with Carp!

    TanyardMarch6011_zpsa6113006.jpg

    TanyardMarch6021_zps382b8936.jpg

As we turned from the highway and headed back toward the road we tried to stay along the creek and stay as dry as possible.

    TanyardMarch6024_zps20d6995e.jpg

    TanyardMarch6033_zps2e86cef0.jpg

Finally, we were back at the road and at one of the two pipes that run under the road.

    TanyardMarch6036_zps5836c9fd.jpg

There are two pipes there and when the lake is full only one pipe can be seen and it too, is almost submerged.

There were two landmarks that brought back memories today. One was a stick up in the channel that will be familiar to Lamon Ware as well as Tim "Cool Dad" Gill. At full pool a part of this tree branch will only be sticking a couple of feet out of the water.

    TanyardMarch6034_zps0a2eaf7a.jpg

The other spot was the far pole along the beach where I pulled out quite a few nice Carp this past Spring & Summer!

    TanyardMarch6008_zps86a60a01.jpg

So for now, it is just a waiting game. The water and the temperatures will rise over the next 3-4 weeks. The fish will eventually come under the road from the lake and before you know it, Carptimonium will break out once again at the old Tanyard Creek Beach!!

  5. All we really wanted to do this morning was to get out of the house. It has been over two months since we have seriously fished so we were desperately due for a change of scenery. After confiding in the Ultimate Carp Hound (Maximus Relaximus) and consulting with Tim “Cool Dad” Gill, the dock at Wallace Dam was chosen as our first venue for “Carpin with the Captain 2014”. Many of you know that my go to bait includes a Puff on the hook and Strawberry Grits. Cool Dad of course, fishes his patent pending “Plug of Perfection” almost exclusively.

    WallaceFeb7016_zps002e456b.jpg

The “Plug” to some is a simple cereal packed cylinder but let me tell you a little secret. Do not be deceived. The Plug has put fear in the face of fish from New York’s Hudson River all the way down to the Panhandle of sunny Florida! Since my Puffs only accounted for one “Pre-Bump Twitch” today I will now continue the telling of The “Plug” Prompts a Test at Wallace Dam Dock!

It is February and it has been an unseasonably cold winter so far. With predictions of upper 50’s including some sun we made our appearance fairly early on Wallace Dam Dock.

    WallaceFeb7001_zps308b3fe7.jpg

Lately we have driven all the way down to the dock. Our plan is to flash our AARP Cards if anyone tries to tell us to park somewhere else.

    WallaceFeb7018_zpsb305ab3c.jpg

    WallaceFeb7017_zpsfe238d0b.jpg

We were set up soon and we were fishing our normal two poles each and once in the water I walked down the dock to make a phone call. My call was quickly interrupted by Cool Dad! Within minutes of throwing his first two Plugs in the water he had gone from counting rust spots on the rail to experiencing a very Proper Pull Down!!

    WallaceFeb7003_zps1e086ad2.jpg

    WallaceFeb7009_zpsee52594d.jpg

Not only that, but as he was reeling in his first fish his other pole went down!!! Now I’m always willing to help a friend out so I grabbed that second pole and we each brought a fish to the mat!

    WallaceFeb7006_zps3cc4248d.jpg

    WallaceFeb7005_zps67c5a853.jpg

But in so doing it immediately brought a dilemma or a test to the Ultimate Carp Hound!

    WallaceFeb7004_zps4e6fb2ff.jpg

You can almost see it in his eyes. After years of licking Carp he now had to make a choice! What was he to do? I thought you’d never ask………..

It was as if he were frozen in time. I even sensed he was waxing poetic as though he were repeating something like “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,. And sorry I could not travel both. And be one traveler, long I stood”. Some report that he first licked the Cat while others say the Carp got the first tongue of the season. All I know is that about an hour later Cool Dad’s pole went down again and Max completely freaked out!!!

When he heard the alarm he started spinning around in circles and barking like a thing possessed!!! His mouth started salivating so much that he would have made Pavlov’s dog look like a dry tongued Cur!!

In desperation he started licking Tim’s fish! It was almost as if he were trying to get the previous nasty taste out of his mouth!!

    WallaceFeb7010_zps40aec2f1.jpg

    WallaceFeb7013_zps9af007f0.jpg

After lunch Tim and I snoozed a bit while Max lay in the sun sporting his brand new John Deere vest with pride.

There were no more fish today but as I look back in retrospect I firmly feel that this year is going to be a real Humdinger!

    WallaceFeb7020_zpsf8e4d939.jpg

You may not understand at all. You may think this is all poppycock and balderdash. That’s OK because we know that your mind will change once you take the time to come see us!!

  6. Once upon a time there were two young men and a middle aged Carp Hound. These three shared a passion for pursuing, catching, licking and releasing Common Carp (Cyprinus Carpio). One of the anglers was a really cool dad while the other was a self proclaimed captain of sorts.

When they were younger it seems that they would go year round! Neither rain, nor cold, nor gloom of night would keep these men from seeking the gold! However, as they grew older (and wiser) they longed for warmer days.

Early one February (like now) the Ol Captain saw where it was going to be almost 60 degrees with very little wind on a particular Friday (like tomorrow) on the dock at Wallace Dam in Eatonton, Georgia. After touching base with the dog as well as the Cool Dad a plan was set into motion!

Now folks, we may not catch a thing tomorrow but who knows? The first Carp of the year may be caught on the Wallace Dam dock! The all important question is this: Will it come on the Puff or will it fall prey to the Plug of Perfection?

Stay tuned and if you are going to be near Eatonton, Come see us!!!

  7. I have just returned from the mailbox and lightly thumbed through the Special Edition NACA. I can assure you that this periodical alone is well worth the cost of membership to me! I pledge to take it on every outing this year (and good Lord willing, I’ll have many). I promise to show it to everyone who comes to see us (and there will be more than a few).

When Max saw the photo on the top of page 41 he simply smiled his normal smile of Carptimonious humility:) Can’t wait to read the articles but I can say that Rick Walker’s photography gives this outstanding and wonderful edition a stunning finish!!

A tip of the Ol Captain’s hat goes out to all involved. I’m afraid that by December the “shiny” will be worn off of this issue! Well done!!
