  1. Atlanta’s weather has been unseasonably warm lately. When it reaches near 70 on a sunny January afternoon in "Big A" it is almost a sin not to go Carpin’. I had sent out an invitation the other day for a short Monday afternoon session on the Hooch. There are those who only have a window of time now and then to get out and go. Often, silly things like work interfere with their schedules so they can only get out and go Carpin’once in a while.

My guest today is very dear to me. He is a fellow deacon at CLBC as well as a long time friend. Our main goal was to just sit and relax and talk about our faith, our families, and perhaps some current events. We have both been very blessed so these topics come quite naturally to each of us. We had planned on meeting around 3:45 but due to a last minute meeting at work I was running about 30 minutes late. We baited up and by 4:30 we had lines in the water.

Some folks believe in luck. They eat collard greens and black eyed peas to insure their finances for the New Year. I don’t know if those items help finances but for Carp fishing if I were looking for a lucky vegetable today it would absolutely have to be a “Butterbean”! That’s right folks! My special guest today was Lon “Butterbean” Wynn! Lon was Carp King of 2002 and no one noticed. We had no trophy and we had little or no pictures of the Bean and his catch. Bean has been patient. He has waited and been still. Was what occurred today luck or Divine intervention? I thought you’d never ask………….

Within 45 minutes of our baiting brother Lon had a Pull Down!

    046140.JPG

At first he didn’t think it was very big then after almost 10 minutes anda few runs up the Hooch, Bean brought this DRCFA record shattering 11 lb, 8 oz gleaming, glistening, hog of a Golden Ghost to the bank! Talk about raising the standard! Long live King Bean! We are not worthy! We are not worthy!

    046141.JPG

Two other fish were caught by dark. Bean caught another at 4 lbs, 7 ozs and the ol’ Captain finally came through with a 4 lb, 11 oz after sundown.

Please e-mail Lon and congratulate him! It would mean a lot. He is a fine American and has been a local fireman for over 25 years! His address is lwynn@co.douglas.ga.us

    Thanks!

  2. We presented Chuck the revolving Trophy after church this morning. He will keep it until someone catches a bigger one. He will then give it up to the next DRCFA Carp King. Who ever has it at sunrise next Thanksgiving morning will be crowned our Carp King of the year!

Thanks for following our stories. It encourages me and the guys will really get a kick out of it if you will e-mail congratulations each time the trophy rotates!

    Thanks so much!

  3. Vision

This morning the DRCFA finds itself at a crossroad. We have no leader. We are like a Carp out of water, aimlessly flipping and flopping about. Our group is already 8 days into the New Year and we still have no Carp King. So far there has been no one to point the way and share a vision for 2005. The Good Book says that “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). I am reminded of Alice’s conversation with the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland:

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the cat.

“I don’t much care where,” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the cat.

“So long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an afterthought.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the cat, “if only you walk long enough.”

It has been said that leadership emerges. Today on Saturday, January the 8th several brave men went forth seeking the DRCFA’s first Golden Ghost of the year. Would we have a leader by sundown or will we as an association continue to flop and flounder around? Would a Carp King finally surface today? Will someone rise from the ashes (or mud) to give us a vision for 2005? I thought you’d never ask………

Two groups went forth today in hot pursuit of our very first Cyprinus Carpio of 2005. Chuck Wolf lead a group at the Dog River Dock while the Ol' Captain met his guest of the day at the Chattahoochee Boat Ramp.

My guest today is often mistaken for Jake or Ellwood Blues of The Blues Brothers but he is really none other than Mr. Jerry “Happy” Howard:

    045852.JPG

Jerry is a member in good standing at CLBC where he serves our church as the chairman of our Stewardship committee. He has spent most of his life in the banking business so after doing some expert calculating and ciphering he figured on being our first King of the year. We spent about three hours at the bank and had some great conversation but when our bank book was finally tallied around 5:00 the balance was a big fat zero!

    What about Chuck’s Group?

Many of you will remember reading several past adventures involving Chuck and the Ol’ Captain. Some of you think that Chuck is just an easy going, happy go lucky fellow who just loves to relax and go a Carpin’. Folks, nothing could be farther from the truth! The man is an animal! He wasn’t content to just be the DRCFA’S “Top Cat” of 2004. No way! Chuck “I want it all this year!” Wolf stepped up today on his home court of Dog River to become the DRCFA’s first Carp King of 2005! How much did it weigh? I thought (and he hoped) you’d never ask! May I present our first King of the year with his whopping 1 lb, 8 oz Golden Ghost!

    045855.JPG

Please E-mail Chuck and congratulate him on this magnificent feat! His address is chuck_wolf1000@msn.com

By the way folks, many of you have read about recent gang activity in the Atlanta area. Some of you will even remember the Apple Dumplin’ Gang starring Don Knotts. It broke the Ol’ Captain’s heart tonight when this picture of the newly formed Dog River Gang came out over the network. The sad part is that several of these boys are so very young .

Please note who the ring leader is! That's our Boy! Long live the King!!

  4. I am sad to announce that we still have no DRCFA Carp King for 2005! A few members are going tomorrow to try to catch our first Golden Ghost of the year. I wrote a poetic note to encourage them to come to the Chattahoochee tomorrow to give 'em a try:

"We have no Carp King!" Cried the DRCFA

    What can I tell them?

    What can I say?

There’s no one to strut or to brag or to boast,

The answer is simple…….We’ve not seen a “Ghost”!

It’s the 4th of the month; let’s not wait until spring,

We must have a leader. We need a Carp King!

How will we get one? My mind has gone blank.

Now I remember! We’ll meet at the bank!

The Hooch boat ramp is the venue of choice,

The people have spoken. We must heed their voice!

This coming Saturday, let’s meet around two.

If you catch the first Carp, the King could be you!

So what do you think? Will you be there at two?

Just let me know, ‘cause I’m counting on you!

If a King is crowned I would appreciate it if some of you would e-mail our first leader of 2005!

Here is hoping for a Monarch of Minnows by this time tomorrow!

  5. The New Year…..A Time for………..

In many ways a New Year is like springtime. January offers a fresh start and a new beginning. It is a time to shed the old and anticipate and plan for the new. This time of year is often a season filled with high hopes, big dreams and new resolutions. Many want to lose weight. Some (obviously unaffiliated with the DRCFA) may need to gain weight. Others may want to quit unhealthy habits and begin afresh in 2005. It is an exciting time! It is a time to look ahead. It is certainly not a time to look back with disappointment and despair. Satchel Paige once said…”Don’t look back, something might be gaining on you!” Now is the time to look forward to a New Year full of challenges and opportunities. I hope during these days that you have searched your hearts and souls and set some appropriate goals for this fifth year of the new millennium. What? You say you haven’t even given it a thought? You don’t even know where to begin? You say you need some suggestions? Like to know more? I thought you’d never ask………………………..

Some of you have had a lifetime of experiences with no tangible reward to show for it. Your shelves and trophy cases are empty, dusty and void of even the slightest ribbon, plaque or certificate. You never made the team. You just weren’t popular or athletic but you’ve always secretly wanted and desired to excel and be the best in some area. Well sir, have I got a deal for you!

The 2005 DRCFA Golden Ghost Carp King Contest will tip off one second after midnight this Friday night and will continue until sunrise on Thanksgiving morning! This year (thanks to our great sponsor-Captain Vic Tison http://vic2fish.com) we are offering three fantastic Carp places. Along with the first place “Carp King” award there will be special prizes for 2nd and 3rd place as well! We will also be recognizing our “Top Cat” again this year at our end of season banquet! (And you thought you had nothing to live for).

I personally have many goals for the year and among those are to get more people involved in our group and our efforts. To be honest, our group is not about fish, it’s all about people. It is about enjoying a morning of “boat talk” aboard the now famous ALVA D. It is about a Cracker Barrel breakfast and coffee with a friend. It is about eating fried catfish and hushpuppies prepared by Tom & Carol Kilgore. It is about bringing a smile to a reader that perhaps I’ve never even had the pleasure or opportunity to meet. It is about spending time with someone and just listening to them. It is a time to hear Chuck Wolf's hearty laughter echo down the creek at Dog River. As I reflect on 2004 “I stand amazed” at how much God has blessed me and my family. I have never been one to pursue many material possessions (except for my new truck) but because of what God has done for me I count myself as being one of the wealthiest men alive. I do hope you will join me this year as we bask in the sun, eat ‘til we pop, talk ‘til we drop, and seek a “Pull-Down” at every stop. I wish you all the best in 2005!

And now…the moment you’ve all been waiting for……………….

    What is it?

It is the partially completed 2005 DRCFA Golden Ghost Carp King Award! That's what it is! My friend, neighbor and fishing buddy Earl Lofton will soon be sanding, staining and completing the nice wooden base. Please note the authentic Rod and the plump Golden Ghost attached to the line! This fine piece stands approximately 12 inches high and sits on a base that measures 6 ½ X 9 ½ inches.

    044642.JPG

    044643.JPG

So dust off those cobwebs. Make room on your trophy shelf and get ready for the New Year!

Please note that upon completion, the trophy will be presented to the first Carp King of the New Year. Whenever a bigger Carp is caught the trophy will rotate to the new “King”. Whoever has this statue in their possession at sunrise Thanksgiving morning will be crowned the DRCFA Carp King 2005! What a contest! What a country! What a way to have a great time in 2005! Happy New Year!! Let the Games begin!!

    Until next time,

  6. As I was browsing through some photos I ran across this one. It was taken during the last year of my teaching career in 2003. I had told Mrs Cosper's 2nd grade class about the ALVA D but they wanted more than stories. They wanted to go on board! As they returned to class they were chanting..ALVA D! ALVA D! ALVA ! It was so cool to see them having fun.

Are children important? You bet your sweet boilie's they are! We should all take time to take a kid fishing in 2005!

  7. When I placed my order for my Christmas hat I felt like I would be one of MANY to order one. It seemed like such a great way to support CAG. Maybe you just didn't realize that these babies are fitting attire for most any Christmas occasion. I'm sure it's not too late. Get yours today!!! Save it for next year! Wear it at the FFF! Buy one for your mother-in-law!

  8. We fish at a public boat ramp just south of town (Atlanta). The river divides Fulton/Douglas counties where we fish. I work next door to the river at an Auto Auction and I live across the river in Douglas County. We have caught several in the 3-7 lb range but only 2 over 9lbs. You can see my PB is only 12-3 but that's changing in 2005!!

  9. I have invited my group to join me on the bank of the Chattahoochee tomorrow afternoon. The river is really up. I have prebaited or chummed the boat ramp area where we fish with a mixture of rabbit feed and scratch chicken feed. I put out 25 lbs yesterday and 25 more today. It should be 53 and sunny by our high noon meeting time. Last time I was the only one who showed up but I did catch a fish :D . Here's hoping for more Carp and more people.

  10. Christmas Carp

Several days ago I sent out an appeal to many of the DRCFA in hopes that you'd join me today on the banks of the Chattahoochee River (The Hooch). I thought out of 25-30 folks that surely someone would rise to the bait. My plan was to bask in the sun for about 2-3 hours this afternoon, study my Sunday School Lesson, and hopefully get a Christmas Pull-Down! Did anyone show up? Did any rods Pull-Down? “Tell us, Ol’ Captain, What actually happened this warm December day on the banks of the Hooch”? Well, I thought you’d never ask…………………………………………

After swinging by Mc D’s for a Quarter Pounder Combo, I headed to the Hooch. I was running just a little late of my noon appointment but I still got set up by 12:20 PM. Absolutely no one else showed up to fish citing excuses like work, shopping, etc. Danny Anderson from GDAA did however, stop by for a cameo appearance and to check on the Ol' Captain.

I just hope next year that the DRCFA will get their priorities back in order. I decided much like the Little Red Hen, that if no one came then I would just do it by myself!

The conditions were ideal for December. I had thrown out 5 gallons of sweet horse feed yesterday in hopes of chumming up a Christmas Carp. The temperature was in the high 50’s with light to no wind.

    042118.JPG

The bank was muddy but I soon had my two rods out and my chair and Sunday School lesson in place.....................

    042119.JPG

    042120.JPG

I read a bit and dozed a bit. Somewhere between that still small voice of the Lord and my third Cat nap, I noticed one of my rod tips moving. It wasn’t the usual shout of a Pull Down. It appeared to be the whisper of the great Christmas Carp!! After He bumped a time or two I tightened the line and this Santa Carp headed to the North Pole!! Now what could I do? My drop net was in the truck…….

    042121.JPG

and I was by myself. I brought the Ghost to the surface and placed the rod bobbing and weaving, back in its holder. I got up the hill to the net and after some slipping and sliding down the bank.........

    042123.JPG

I brought this baby to the net!!

    042122.JPG

I was by myself but what a great afternoon in the sun! All in all. I’d have to say that this afternoon was certainly some time well spent.
