  1. Tomorrow will be my first trip to my beloved Dog River since Thanksgiving. After fishing mostly with canned corn last year I am going to try pack bait tomorrow as well. I have a trout chow/cream corn mix prepared. I am using Corn Pop cereal as a Pick up. My daughter’s boyfriend is joining me. He is 24 and I am looking forward to a great day. If it rains too much we make go to a local pay lake instead.

I am attaching my favorite picture of the Dog. I took this sitting aboard the ALVA D. Notice the bow of the boat to the left. I am anchored next to an old bridge piling on my right. Please wish us well!

  2. Kyle:

It is so great to that hear you are catching fish! With all the time spent on this board and all that you've learned you will have a great season I'm sure. How far is this spot from your home? I do hope that you and your dad will have many many more Carp trips in the future. There is something majical about a boy fishing with his dad. Keep it up! You are making memories that will last you a lifetime.

  3. The ALVA D is propelled by a 43 lb thrust trolling motor. The two places I fish don't allow gas engines. Dog River Reservoir is our 250 acre Water supply operated by our local WSA (Water/Sewer Authority). It is probably one of the cleanest waters in Georgia. THe other area is Sweetwater Creek State Park which has a huge lake only 5 minutes from my house. The trolling motor works fine for my current needs.

  4. I thought y'all might enjoy our latest story from the DRCFA:

    Another Epidemic?

A year and a half ago I reported on an infection that took Dog River by storm. I am including this edited excerpt in case you are not aware of what happened to the DRCFA during that fall season. The following story is taken from a report written on Oct 5th, 2002:

    Attention Everyone!!!!!

Many of you have heard about the West Nile Virus. You may not believe this (and surely you won't), but the CDC in Atlanta just this morning has identified an outbreak of a previously undiscovered virus in Dog River!!! The disease is commonly known as CARP-PULL-TUNNEL SYNDROME! It is highly contagious and could be habit forming after only one exposure!! Some of the symptoms include increase in heart rate, stiffening of the back muscles as well as increased pressure in the wrists and fingers. The victims often let out loud shrieks and act in an almost uncontrollable manner. Wide grins are not uncommon.

I am writing this in hopes that we can better prepare ourselves for an upcoming season of a new infection that reportedly may not only reach the Dog but may spill over into the Chattahoochee River as well! What disorder am I referring to? I thought you’d never ask………………………….

As a reporter of important and life changing facts, I would be remiss not to mention the malady that lies before us. It may strike us as early as March but the experts say it may not begin until April but could reach pandemic proportions by summer!!! What is this new-fangled disorder? It is none other than the dreaded Mad Carp Disease!!

These Golden Ghosts have been mostly dormant all winter. They have stayed near the fireplace and relived and retold the days of escaping the hooks on the Chattahoochee River. They have planned and prepared themselves for the dreaded return of The ALVA D on the Dog. Their slogan for 2004 is short and simple…We won’t get mad, we will just get even!!!! Gentlemen of the DRCFA…we must be prepared!! We have but a few more weeks to respool, repack and respond! Are you up to the task? I certainly hope so!

    Until Next Time,

    Keep on Carpin'

  5. After reading Telfish's stories and seeing the wonderful pictures, it makes me more proud of my Mitchell 300 reel. I grew up fishing with them in Florida but the one I use now belonged to a dear friend and mentor of mine who passed away a few years ago. His wife gave me the reel along with some other equipment. I will never forget Tommy or the joy of my first Mitchell 300. Probably one of the best reels ever made.

Great stories and pictures. Thanks Telfish!

  6. The Dog River Carp Fishing Association has already begun it's search for "Carp King 2004". We have a rotating plaque that goes from King to King during the year. Whoever has the plaque in their possession Thanksgiving morning will be crowned DRCFA Carp King of the year at our end of season covered dish dinner. We are all rookies so our fish are small compared to this board's standards. Last year our King won with a 7lb, 10 oz fish. We are well on our way this year. We are on our 4th King who leads with a 6 lb, 8 oz Carp. We have added the Chattahoochee River to our venues so we expect some bigger fish this year. Last year we restricted it to Dog River only. With advice and help from this board we are expecting great things this year from the DRCFA.

I am posting a picture of our plaque. I write a weekly report with stories and send it out via e-mail. If you are interested in our "tales" and want to be added to our mailing list simple e-mail me at fortrabbit@hotmail.com.

Thanks so much to this board for the info and the encouraging words.

  7. I am attaching a team shot. Lauren is the second from the left next to her main sqeeze, Chris. I am the old dude in the back. Chad, Meredith and the kids are in front of me with my wife Ramona who has been my wonderful bride for 30 1/2 years.

Alva Daniel LaFavor (1901-1977) was my dad. Alva D comes from my dad's name. He loved to fish and taught me integrity. the love of the outdoors and a good work ethic. I named my little boat after him. I wonder what kind of legacy are we leaving our boys today?
