I've been thinking recently and I want to know if there is any way to know what baits and flavors to use and when. I have been carp fishing for a few years now using strictly canned corn with some mild success from K-1 Pineapple Ice Cream and Fruiti Tutti. I have previously tried homemade boilies with zero success. I'm just wondering if there is a way to tell what flavor of bait to use or if you should use boilies,pellets, or corn in certain conditions. Or is there absolutely no specific way to tell what to use and when. I almost want to connect it to bass fishing for example obviously you will use certain baits in certain conditions at certain times. I would really like to expand the baits I use while fishing for carp. So any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Got back from college two weeks ago and finally got settled back at home. Had a week off before work started and I was able to fish 5 out of 7 days. Went to my local swim that I have the fish dialed in. This years a little different since last year they drained 50% of the reservoir and this year they filled it back up. It was nice being able to use my old spots again and get on fish. Only problem is snagging the old root systems left behind by the bushes and other shrubs that overgrew the half drained reservoir. With in those five days I landed 36 fish. I really like this swim but the only "problem" is that a huge fish here is around 10lbs 32". But the 3-8lbers are a lot of fun they are all healthy and I have them so dialed in its a good time. Caught all of my fish on corn with a walking sinker on the main line swivel 20lb flour leader then either a size 6 or 8 hook depending on what I had left in my tackle box. One thing I noticed the first day was a lot of small hits and my bait being cleaned off. So I figured the bluegill and sunnies must be interested in my bait and they were going to clean my hooks all day. Sure enough I see my one line starting to run so I set the hook thinking it was not a carp and sure enough I reel it in and it was a carp around 7". I couldn't believe it. I'd say of the 36 fish I landed 15 of them were in the 5-8" range I've never caught them this size in my life or seen them in the wild that size. Now I am a big aquarium guy and I've always wanted one to have in a tank for a little bit then release it into a pond. So i told myself this guys a little too big for me I'd love to keep it but it'd be wrong. Sure enough I was packing up bringing the rods in I get a bonus fish which was around a 5lb fish and then I bring the final rod in and noticed my line was swimming. I thought well here is that bluegill and sure enough another small carp but around 5" so I scrambled and luckily found a bucket that was washed up on the bank after Hurricane Sandy. Transported this guy home and put him in the tank. By far my favorite fish.

I am going to attempt to get into fishing for carp on the fly. This will be done at a few ponds, creeks, and one larger lake during the spawn when they're in the flats. Anyone have any recommendations on go to flies or flies that you need to have for doing this? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yeah this reservoir was drained to around this point. Its a real shame because it used to be a lot larger. In my bottom two pictures the winter of 2011 the water line was at the tree line. So all of those green shrubs and bushes would of been under water. Its a sad thing to see but I'm glad there's still fish to catch. I'm hoping yesterdays and today's storms but a little more water back in. To answer classiccat I am actually from Ambler but I have never fished the Delaware. I will be taking a flathead trip on the Schuylkill either this weekend or early next week. I have been thinking about fishing the Del but just haven't found a spot or had the time too.

Well after almost a year of my favorite little carp hole closed I've mastered it again. Even though its been drained to about half the size and the fish in here were never anything huge I'm still having good outings always averaging at least 1 fish. I've only been a serious carp angler for about 5 years now and finally two nights ago I got my first double. I was reeling in one fish my buddy came over to standby with the net and my other rod started to scream drag so it finally happened a double header. We didn't take pictures of the fish since it was late and we were both drenched from them but finally we cracked into some 10lbers. Here are some pictures of a few of them.

Zetts fish farm they're in central PA they're under the name Israeli Carp. Give them a ring. They're like 5 bucks and whatever shipping is. I was going to get two this summer but due to other projects around my house, a lack of spending money, and being away at school I chose not to get one for my tank. I figured since I'll only be home every two weekends those suckers will destroy my tank and poop everywhere. Last thing I'd want is my European Native tank to get wiped out. But if you do business with them let me know its run by an older couple so they don't do paypal or anything like that just mailing the money or checks. Hope that helps you out

Yeah that should be fine for the time being. Usually to keep carp people want anything above 100+gallons. For a few years I keep rotating a few inch carp into my 75 gallon tank and as much as I love them they were a handful. Constantly uprooting my plants and re arranging the tank to how they wanted it and they are poop factories. I'd have to clean my tank twice a week but it was worth it they're awesome fish to keep a lot of personalty.

Went to my local mostly drained resevior and did pretty well. Word on the street was the DNCR took all of the fish there during draining and took them to the private lake across the street I am a member of. It was a site to see bass, carp, perch, crappies being hauled across a street and dumped into another lake. Turns out that was false the dam began to leak after a massive storm and a pipe to drain water accidently was opened and fish were drained into this little spillway and fish were still in it. So I said I'll give it a shot if thats the case and fish still are in there.Managed 6 fish and a 10-15lb snapping turtle in about 2 hours. Now if anyone has read my last post my first trip of the summer was only last week since this resevior was supposed to be drained and have no fish in it and my private fishing club lake across the street with 20lb+ carp was closed and is private property constantly being watched by the police. Now I am a quality over quantity guy anyday but this resevior for some reason holds smaller carp but across the street they are larger. I dont know its a werid obseravation in my eyes. Hopefully I'll catch a suprise 20lber who knows. As you can see from the pictures that pump thing my buddies standing next to used to be covered or just about at the 0 line with water. The damn to the right was leaking so they drained a massive amount of the resevior to do repairs. So I went from a nice large resevior to almost a large pond. Its a bummer and its supposedly not supposed to be filled like it used to be again. On the bright side it makes carp fishing way easier with less water to cover.

How big are they? You want to make sure you dont overload the tank. Your ammonia levels will skyrocket and kill your fish I know from expierence. I used to keep carp in fish tanks but they are a pain since they grow so quickly and eat and poop so much causing high amounts of ammonia. When I upgrade my tank to 200 gallon tank I'll start keeping them again. What are you using as a filter for them?

So finally got my first trip in,in a long time. Locally all of my carp spots have had something happen to them where I couldnt fish them. I am a private memeber with a trout lake that is loaded with 20+lb carp. Pulled my Pb 40lber out of there. Now this lake is way back in the early 1900's was man made. There is no bank it is surrounded by a conceret wall so in a sense its a giant swimming pool. Well this year repairs were supposed to be done to the wall since it is collapsing but since we dont own the lake the orphanage property that it is own had to pay well they do not have the money to repair it so thats been closed. My second is my local resevior right across the street. Last year in April the dam broke and a pipe was accidently opened sending fish to the spillway so the DNCR came loaded those fish up and put them in the private lake I cant fish. So recently got some info from a guy who works the water tower at the resevior and he said theres still alot of fish left so I gave it a shot. Landed my first two carp of the Summer in July. A little late I know but worth it. The only issue I have with this place is that the carp are smaller which is a bummer. Landed both on hair rigs with corn. Fished for about 2 hours but it was non stop action constantly getting hits but for some reason some wouldnt take it. Felt great bringing the carp gear out again.

Anyone have any suggestion on what the best flavor of boilie is? I have just started to broading my horizons on other carp baits other than flavored or canned corn. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone on this forum have any carp as pets in either ponds or tanks? If so could you post some pictures I think it would be cool to see them on this website. Im getting my own carp when I return from college for my tank/pond. Hope to see some pictures

My absolute favorite prime time carp spots are "closed" for this year and maybe years to come. My local reservoir has been drained due to damage to the dam which was absolutely thick with carp ranging from 5-20lb real fun spot its guaranteed fish. My second is an oversized pond across the street which is a private trout fishing club I am a member of. It was a man made pond that has a cement wall lining. Well a section of the wall collapsed and they have closed the pond for the year and this place is loaded with larger carp anywhere from 10-40lbs and thanks to the reservoir draining they stocked the pond with the carp in there. Also this spot is private property which means I cannot go on since there is a house on the property. So I am basically stuck with the Wissahickon Stream for anyone familiar with fishing the Philadelphia suburbs. Does anyone have any tips on how to fish streams for carp. I've caught mirrors and stuff but it is really spotty maybe one a trip. So if anyone has tips or has the down low on a spot close by I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I have had experience with Koi in my tank before but if anyone else wants to share their tank setups for their carp or koi I would love to hear it. MarshallB you gave me some great info and I will be buying a few of those filters recommended. I apperciate it

I've had koi in my tank before but had to give them away before I went away to college. I have been to a lot of bait shops around me and they do not have any, With catching them I have never seen any carp under five pounds. I apperciate all the help I have recieved so far and I am using it I hope to hear some more.
