  1. Thought some of you newer guys would get a kick out of this. Good luck to all that brave the cold weather in search of that first bite of 2013!!!

I have said this for at least the 5 years I have been posting to carp boards.

CARP DO NOT FEED IN WATER BELOW 50 DEGREES - NOPE!

And, I might add what they do ingest they do not digest. At 50 or below carp digestive system is between 5 and 10% efficient.

Ohh I know, you've caugh fish in colder water, don't go there. The fish may have been bored, may have been reacting to instint, may have been curious, - but it wasn't feeding.

Commercial fish farms and hundreds of 10th acre bait pond test data consistantly support this fact. A cold water carp weighing 10 lbs can be twice as old as its Southern cousin with year around feeding conditions.
Carp in or above the 40th parallel also tend to have larger livers. The liver is where carp store most of their unused energy. (I can no longer find the source of my last statement on energy storage.)

There is a trade-off. I believe there is a higher concentration of big fish along the Northern line. Because of the ecology fish from different spawn years can all weigh about the same. When conditions are like they ae in the St. Larry for example you can and will have a concentration of large fish that survive the cold for whatever reason and small fish tend to be naturally selected to contain the bio-mass of carp.

OTOH, if a Southern carp survives competition, disease, drought, etc, then a few fish have a chance to become genetic monsters. When you run into big fish in the South unlike Towne Lake in TX you usually are also plagued with 5 - 25 lbrs. In the South the richer the environment the more small fish you will catch.

Occasionally the North suffers this problem (I'm thinking Wisc. here) also. Extreamly deep wintering areas with warm 50+ spring water and huge flats in the temperate months. Couple this with extreme pressue on predatory fish by anglers and you have a disasterous carp population of 2 to 10 lbrs.

In closing, I consider myself an expert on this subject and will not site any other source. Carp DO NOT feed in water below 50 degrees F. May I also say this is a mean temperature subject to a 3 or 4 degreee flux.
