  1. Last week I got a pm from Mr. BigBird himself telling me a certain body of water was now fishable. I have made several trips to this certain spots many of time this year, only to find it un-fishable even with 4oz of lead!!!! Last Night I made sure to get registered with the new TOKS Tournament, even though I figured this would down my odds of having good luck. Boy was I Wrong!

I packed the car like always on Saturday night, and filled the gas tank up. I had trouble sleeping, because the sound of my alarms screaming and my reels smoking mist into the air like a fountain, kept me awake. I watched Korda videos until I finally was able to fall asleep. Simply stated, My alarm wasn’t enough to wake me up! I was 2 hours into a fight with a 65 pound Leather, and I wasn’t going to miss it!!!! I ended up rising out of bed at 7:30, grabbing odds and ends, and took off.

I ended up arriving to the spot around 9:00 after getting things at Wal-Mart, and grabbing a bite at McDonalds. The drive was horrid! It seemed as though a hurricane just hit Georgia Full Force! Luckily when I arrived there was nothing but a slight fog, and one other angler who left shortly after I arrived. I found a swim and started hauling all my kit down. White bass were jumping all over the place. I had no business with them though, as I was looking for something say……35 times their size. I started the day off with a puff and corn combo on a paylake rig, and a oats/cereal pack. Not a lot of lead was needed as the water was not rough, luckily.

After about 2 hours, and nothing but a bit of catfish action, I decided to switch up to hair rig, with 2 pieces maze/ 1 small peace yellow foam. That was my best decision of the day. I got my first run of the day, a screamer like the rest. I fought the fish for a minute, only to be cut off by a rock. The same thing happened again 15 minutes later.

As depressed as I was, I got hit again. Only this one was all mine! Straight to the net he went, and I was well chuffed with my first fish of the day. He topped the scales at 13.9 pounds. I quickly got him back in the tub, and got that pole out again. Shortly after, my right hand pole burst into action, only to end up being a pulled hook.

Thirty minutes later, I got a spectacular run. I grabbed the pole and got a great hookset. The fish towed me for about 10 minutes till I was able to wade up to my knees and land him in the net. When I finally layed him gently on the net, I got the full extent of how big the fish really was. I knew he had to be close to a new PB. He hit the scales at 22.3 pounds!!!!!My thoughts were correct and I now had a new PB, beating my old one by about a pound! My emotions where high as I had drawn a family of spectators while battling the brute, and yelled in excitement.

Several more runs, and several more rigs lost to the rocks left me tired and beat. I decided to pack up when a water-moccasin had invaded the area, which kept me from wading anymore. The drive home was the same as the approach, but I had the thought of my new PB in my head and that was all that mattered. Thanks For your time and good luck mates!!

  2. Well after two months of carping, I was finally able to get in a nice day session at the Wallace Dam. Due to school and soccer, I haven’t been able to get out to do much at all. So Friday afternoon, I decided a trip was in order. A quick call to the Ol’ Captain on Saturday evening reassured me that the fish were biting great at the tailrace. I got to the Dam and sure enough, there were a couple other older guys who were out there and had arrived just before me. They were life-long carpers and had lots to tell. We shared ideas and techniques and they were speechless when I set up. When I set up my pod and alarms, one of the fellows said “That thing better tell you how long and the weight of the fish”. They had a long history in paylakes, so they had never seen or heard of a pod or bite alarm. The day went on and as everyone called it “R2D2” never had a run. After everyone left, I set up just below the dock and started to haul! I had hard times keeping both rods in the water. I ended the day with 8 fish. None were giants, but just enough to get my carp addiction back into effect. I hope to make another trip somewere in the state soon, to try and get a new PB! Thanks for reading! –joe

  3. Hey Everyone,

Well as a lot of people know, last weekend I caught my first every mirror and I could not stop thinking about carp fishing. I had watched the “Quest for Black-Eye” videos on YouTube, and read about Mario’s target fishing journey, and it got me into thinking about doing my own target fishing.

The fish I had in mind to catch was a fish that I caught last October. I had given it the name “Lefty” because it had a broken left fin. I didn’t get a weight when I caught it last time but I remembered how big it was. I also remembered where I had caught it. I had the determination and will to catch this fish and had the mindset that I wouldn’t stop fishing till I had caught it.

My Plan was to fish all day and night and sleep in the truck when I needed it. I also gave myself two hours a day to run home to stock up on food, check the web, and wash up. I wasn’t sure how I talked my parents into letting me do it, but I guess I sum what sweet talked my mom into letting me do it. I am very glad that my parents are supportive of my hopes to become a professional carp angler! It was good and gravy up until I was trying to talk my mom into paying for me to go to college in the UK. I hurried up and got out of the house before any arguments arose. The truck was packed up and I was hit the road for a long two mile drive to the infamous Lake Luna.

When I got to the lake, I walked around a bit to find any signs of fish. I noticed a small fish that was in search of food on the surface, and I knew right away it wasn’t Lefty. But a good sign that the fish were active, so I thought.

The next 55 or so hours went as follows: through bait in the swim, recast baits, chum, wait, get burnt, go home, get back to the lake, and talk to people about how fun carp are to catch. Then repeat as needed. I had a lot of scares also. I was joined by deer, snakes, armadillos, rabbits, and I guess a bear was in the vicinity. I had cops come racing up to me in their cars. All I could think was great what now. It turns out a bear was loose on the base and I needed to keep an eye out

Then finally around 2 am on the third night of my session, I got a tiny nibble on my rod. I thought nothing of it because I thought I was getting a bit of catfish action. Then my alarm erupted. My left alarm was singing and the whole pod was bouncing around. I bolted down to the water’s edge. I tightened my drag and pulled back on the carp. It was definitely a large fish from what I could tell. After about a ten minute fight, I got the fish in the net and on the mat. Immediately I knew that this was Lefty. I was so excited because I knew all my work and patience had paid off. I’ll let the photos show what a beauty the fish was. Lefty weighed in at 16.5lbs.
