  1. to mario and lorne,

i have really been blown away by what i have witnessed, granted this is a school of 8 small fish in a creek in a run of 100 yards and max depth of 4 ft. i still stand by my big fish theory of boilies being the way for reasons i have stated in many other forum posts (fish population, harder to eject etc). however, i have clearly seen fish ignore certain baits, and show preferences for other baits, a bit like humans do with food choices i guess. had i been fishing blind using the white boilies i may never get a shot at that fantail based on what i have seen, and to add to marios point of recaptures back home i caught one fish three times on the same spot on the same bait, needless to say that in order to evade catching the bigger fish again and landing the fantail all im using now is 8mm pellets for feed and hookbait. i might even catch it if i was not determined to catch the take live on camera meaning i am fishing two feet from the bank

  2. one thing that has interested me this past year is that by stalking in shallow water and filming underwater i have noticed that fish have different personalities/characteristics regarding what they prefer to eat. the larger fish in the creek spot is the largest because he is an eating machine, he loves boilies and would eat most of them and that is why i ended up catching him twice before any other fish. i also noticed that 2 out of the 8 fish would not feed heavily on the boilies, and 2 of the fish i have never even see feed, and that the fantail would just mouth the bait. so i experimented with betaine and robin red pellets and got most of the fish including the fantail feeding, so maybe these so called flavors, baits, methods etc will attract some fish but not others. im a big believer in the boilies but after spending several months observing these fish im also convinced that if i want to catch the fantail i need to use a pellet. interesting stuff to watch, not sure how it relates to those overly stocked garden ponds on steroids known as pay lakes, but certainly for targeting certain big fish in the right environment maybe a bait change is the way to do it, interestingly my 46 and the same fish caught by a mate was both caught on a 20mm pop up that was half one color half another color. is there something in this???

  3. if all you caught on the dynamite white chocolate was cats maybe your location was wrong, i have not had one cat on them all year but did have plenty over carp over 30lb and a 46 ;-), they were an absolutely PURRRFECT bait for me, maybe you should VET the so called field testers/sales reps in future, IAMS off to bed now, out of cat jokes lol

  4. I have a real funny story that i did not witness but a friend did and its a corker, probably best told in person but ill try n make it funny in words. Mate of mine and his friend were fishing a lake one day and Matt Hayes (TV angling personality) was down filming for his show Total Fishing. My mates friend was catching a load of carp on the waggler and Matt and the crew wanted some footage for the show. So Matt explained that he would open by saying "Hi i'm Matt Hayes, welcome to total fishing and today i'm fishing with my friend Rob". The camera would then pan over to Rob and he would say "Hi, my names Rob and today im catching carp on the waggler".

    Easy or so he thought....

The camera went to Matt for the first take.

"Hi im matt hayes, welcome to total fishing where today im fishing with my old mate Rob"

    "Hi my names RRRRRRR RROOOORRRRRRRROOBBBB"

(What Rob had not told matt is that he gets a stutter when hes nervous) lol

Matt Hayes "Not to worry Rob, just relax and lets try again"

"Hi im matt hayes, welcome to total fishing where today im fishing with my old mate Rob"

Hi my names RRRRRR RRROOO RRRRRRROOOBBBB" (does it again)

After about five minutes of practice Rob thinks he has it down.

Finally it goes to plan as Matt starts talking Rob has a bite. Time for a live action shot of him playing a carp.

"Hi im matt hayes, welcome to total fishing where today im fishing with my old mate Rob"

Hi my names Rob and today im catching carp on the waggler"

The camera rolls and carefully Rob plays the fish to the net, just as the fish pop up to be landed you can hear"

    "FFFFFFF UUUUFFFFFFFUUUUUU$@#$$#@#$$KKKKKKK ITS A TENCH!!!!!!!!"

(lol, by far my favorite fish story ever)

  5. If no one has a funny story then go fish with dean brookes (Brookesy) to get one. Everytime i fish with him something unbelievably weird happens. We are going to try and do a joint article on our adventures for NACA. The first time we fished together over night we had a woman in a bikini and a chiseled man in speedo's bathing in our margins, a homeless man bivvied up next to us one night while we were sleeping, a couple in a car making whoopie behind our swim and then there was the incident with a naked chinese man on a bicycle....and that was just one session. We also had the bootcamp fitness freaks in the margins at the ATC and the man who decided to spray paint his car next to mine in a local park. I will have to think of some others as i have had some right laughs on the bank over the years waking up with deer in my bivvy, a mate who cast out and hooked his chair throwing it into the lake and my buddys reel breaking so he landed a forty in france by pulling the line in by hand and keeping it tight with his TEETH!

  6. The whole idea of method (using groundbait) was for match fishing, provide cloud and attraction via the groundbait but only actual food particle is the hookbait, that equals quicker bites. Adding things like hemp, corn , pellet is more of a pleasure angling tactic. I dont know any top matchmen that add anything to their method except maybe a few maggots/pinkies to increase breakdown. Most method using match anglers will recast every 30-120 seconds regardless of a take.

  7. Budget alarms I can highly recommend the nash s5s, 40 bucks each from bct and even comes with a case, better than the lower end alarms you can get for 20 bucks that last one season then pack up working. Pods, normally there are a few floating round cag forum every couple months so might wanna hang tight on that. I picked a fox horizon one up for 80 bucks off here few months back that was mint.

If you want a rod under 12ft nash do a scope in 9ft and 10 ft ($280) or a dwarf version in same sizes ($90). ( both would also have another 10% off as part of bct pre orders).

  8. I have been looking into this topic and maybe in the future it will just be easier to obtain an import bait license for ones self and sell to the anglers in your home State ?

good luck with that, it would never happen, and if it did you would be paying about $50 a kilo once all is said and done.

don't underestimate how lucky we are to get what we currently do. Compared to the Uk and euro market the US is at the back of the line when it comes to priority because of the small community. Now if we had 10% of the usa bass anglers move over to carping you would see a big change in bait importation priorities.

i only work with one company but believe me that the time and investment from them and dave is unbelievable to get access to the bait, and then the bait is sold at the same price it is in the uk (but those tackle store owners have no importation and shipping costs to pay like usa vendors).

I can tell you that one huge bait company has just turned down the offer to target the us market this very week.so maybe its better we get a couple of very good ones and invest in them so they don't desert us in future.

and regarding bait coming in from the Uk/canada/or anywhere else, im not aware of any restrictions that changed recently, read into that what you will, but needless to say there is no need to panic. play will resume as normal in 2014.

  9. Dynamite will still be readily available, and we already have several large pre orders ready to go in January. I know Dave will still be importing other ranges, but sometimes as dave says its the bait company that loses interest due to the red tape. I can never see the UK bait brands not supplying the US market, even though its a smaller population of anglers the market it still big enough because of the quality of bait is far superior to the USA made baits IMHO. Plus the US anglers dont just promote for the US market, but the whole European market also through their websites/facebook etc. The US carp population and fishing environments are so ideal for testing new baits and tackle, so much that in 2014 you may even see US based anglers testing new baits and tackle products for UK brands. The number of fish present, snaggy swims and very warm & very cold climate make this a perfect place to conduct testing.

The UK tackle shops were never allowed to ship bait into the US (not legally anyway). Its not that there are bait restrictions as such, with the required paperwork and the support of the bait brands its a legit process, it just takes time, money and effort for the parties involved. If anyone does want to pre order any dynamite stuff , regardless of whether dave has it in stock or not let me know via a pm on here, they have a new red ammo bait out for 2014 that is meant to be amazing.

  10. Not used pack or method in over a year, and results have been better with bigger fish. i fish single hook baits (normally chod style), with boilies spread over the top with a stick or catapult, for bottom baits i do like a small pva mesh stick just to help with tangles, but will happily fish single baits and just feather down the cast. in my opinion method and pack is not necessary most of the time.
