  1. Of course, you’re right about the stringer. You aren’t the first person to bust

my chops on that one. On the gill-holding remark, there is room for debate on that -

especially since I am not holding the gills. I am placing fingers under the gill covers, probably rubbing

off less slime than those who hold the carp horizonally with bare hands (that would be you, right?)

It is a bit curious that you didn’t care to offer an answer to my question, but seized the opportunity

to criticize. Most in the brotherhood of fisherman are more congenial than that.

  2. My son has gone carp fishing with me several times. Poor dude never caught anything.

I wanted to go with him Saturday but the river level is very high. Good or Bad?

The best spot I've found locally for carp fishing is on the Des Plaines river. There is a

channel in the middle that almost always gets me something. Sometimes several.

I really want him to get something. But it has rained recently and the water level is

up over the banks and the flow is pretty strong.

QUESTION: Is that good or bad? Quick opinions appreciated. I need to decide

whether to call it off or try somewhere else in the Northwest Chicago suburbs.

Attached picture: This 20 pounder (and companions) came from this spot.

  3. I'll be visiting Charlotte for a few days in October and might have a few hours to toss a hook in the water.   Suggestions on where to go would be appreciated.  A quick look at google maps shows the river west of Charlotte  (is that the Catawba?)  looks promising.  I see a boat ramp at highway 74  on the west bank that is very accessible and might be a possibility,  though I doubt that it is a public ramp and I don't know about parking there.

  4. The 2011 rules said a fishing license was required. I also saw that on another CAG forum thread about this year's tounament. I'm wondering.... has anybody ever heard of a carp tournament contestant ever being challenged by DNR for a fishing license? I realize it would be inappropriate to advise someone not to bother with one, but seriously, has it ever happenned?

  5. Thanks for the link. Looks great. I think I posted a reply on the wrong thread. That answers most of my questions. I'll be there. I would, however, like to see the official rules. I don't see them anywhere. Here is what I was able to find for CCC 2011. They seem pretty much the same as the 2012 rules (except for the starting time) which I don't remember or have stashed anywhere. Here is what I found. Anybody have a list of the 2013 rules?

    2011 Chicago Carp Classic Rules:
Match runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 10, 2011.
? You must be a paid-up member of the Carp Anglers Group to participate. You may join at the venue by paying $25 for a one year family membership.
? The entry fee for the Classic is $50.
? Pegs will be assigned to all registered anglers by random drawing. If you wish to fish with another angler, the name must be submitted together before the drawing.
? Pegs may not be traded or substituted but if not all pegs are filled you may purchase a vacant peg for $50. If you do so, you must abandon your original peg, which then may be resold by the registration manager.
? You may setup your gear and plumb your swim as soon as it is assigned to you but fishing and baiting must not start until 9:00 a.m. All these activities must be done within 10’ from the number marking your peg.
? Chumming with loose bait is not allowed. All bait must be introduced into the water with a rod and reel. Spods, PVA bags and stringers, method feeders and packbaits are all acceptable. Catapults, spoons and shovels are not.
? Fishing stops at 4:00 p.m. Any fish hooked and being played at that time may be landed and counted.
? Cyprinus carpio only. No goldfish, Crucians, hybrids, bighead, grass carp or anything else.
? You have the ultimate responsibility for landing, accurately weighing and recording your fish. The stewards will have nets, weigh slings and scales and will do everything possible to help. When you catch a fish, record its weight on your score card, have the steward witness the weight and ensure that the steward transmits the correct information to the registration desk. At the end of fishing, compare your score card with the board at the registration desk and be sure that all your fish have been accurately recorded. Also ensure that the total weight of your four largest fish and the total weight of all your fish have been accurately determined.
The North American Champion trophy will be awarded to the angler with the four fish with the greatest total weight.
Additional trophies will be given to each section winner. In case of ties, the weights of your other fish will be considered.
The Wacker Classic Carper Award will go to individual catching the greatest number of carp; in case of a tie, the weight of the largest fish will be considered.
The Chicago Carp King Jeweled Belt Buckle will be awarded to the angler catching the single heaviest carp.
The Westside Bait & Tackle prize will be awarded to the angler landing the first fish.
The Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts Award for Creative Carp Gear will be given to the angler with the most creative yet functional, DIY carp gear. The stewards and the judges will make this admittedly subjective decision.
You are responsible for your own property and safety. Members and officers of CAG are not responsible for loss or damage to property and equipment. Please remember there will be spectators and children.
Anglers must adhere to the State of Illinois Fishing Code. You may use no more than 2 rods with no more than 1 hook per line. You must have a valid Illinois Fishing License.

  6. Jim, Thanks for the pictures and the added detail. That helps a lot. That only leaves a list of rules. I assume there is a list of them somewhere. # rods. # hooks per rod. Hook requirements (required and disallowed). Net handling. Whatever. I really don't want to come all set to fish and find out that I need to make adjustments. I want to be prepared.

  7. I have looked at the CCC website and this forum for some detail on the event.

I sure would like to have a bit more information.

Is there a map of the Venue?  My assumption is that it would be on the river across the street from

the baitshop.  But it looks (on google maps satelite) like the river is lined with bushes.  So I'm not sure.

I plan on coming but I will need to plan.  Does the venue extend beyond the two bridges?  How big is it?

I don't see a list of rules.  Can somebody please post the rules?  What's allowed?  What's not allowed?

The site says the bivvy town is in the field near the bait shop.   Maybe I'm looking at the wrong

shop but I don't see (google maps) a field near the shop.  Can somebody please post a map?

Where is parking for Saturday's event?  There doesn't appear to be much along the river.

One more:  Are there gobies to contend with in the river?  Any other carp-bait eating critters

    to work around?

  8. It was a beautiful day out there. Very enjoyable.  HOWEVER.  Next year it might not be a beautiful day. This year a few pegs at the ends (nearest the harbor and farthest away)  landed some fish.  The other 45 or 50 pegs in the middle did pretty much zilch. From what I hear, the story was pretty much the same last year. If we change venue next year I'll likely be there (beautiful day or not).  If we do Montrose Harbor again,  I won't.

  9. I have 6 questions on the CCC

    1. CCC web site says peg draw is a 6:30 but doesn't say where. I assume it's at the harbor, but that covers a lot of ground. Just look for a bunch of people and go there?

    2. Fishing starts at 8 am. Does everyone just keep an eye on their watch, or is there a signal of some sort?

    3. Is it allowed for one fisherman to help another land a fish? The water is 6 feet down. Netting your own fish could be a challenge, especially if it's 20+. There are some monsters in Lake Michigan.

    4. Is taking some sounding casts without a hook allowed before 8am to scope out the bottom and depth?

    5. While waiting for the carp with your two allowed rods, is fishing for other fish allowed with another rod (salmon, perch, gobies, whatever?).

    6. I went to check out the tournament site. The seawall at Montrose harbor has a lot of very large rocks in the water nearby. How far out do they tend to go?

  10. There is a fair amount of carp-specific jargon in this thread. Does CAG or other site have a carp glossary to look these up? Specifically, I am missing the meaning of

    Method balls

    Hooklink

    safety lead clip

    nose rubber

I'm sure I could search the forum for each of these and eventually find out what they are, but that would take a lot of time.

  11. Got it. Thanks. Most of it is pretty clear. I have not attended a carp competition so I'm a little vague on the weighing and recording process. The rules say there will be stewards to help with slings and scales and that they must witness and verify. I've noticed that carp don't last long out of water. So when I catch a fish and land it, what is the procedure? Put it on a stringer and flag down a steward? Something else? As for parking, I see that there is "parking all along the venue." Does that refer to Montrose Dr. between the lake and the harbor? Is there enough parking there to accommodate everybody? If not, where do you park?

  12. Yes, I'm stupid and didn't see the link right in front of me. But I keep seeing comments on past CCC's and promises to show up this year, but I can't find the details:

Where is it going to be (yes, Chicago. I'm looking for something a bit more specific)? Who do you pay? What are the Rules? Where do you show up? What is allowed/disallowed?

  13. http://s1182.photobucket.com/albums/x442/dbthj/?action=view&current=TempeLakeFishHere.jpg

This link shows where I fish at Lake Tempe. There's a boat ramp so landing a fish without a net is easy.

The bad part is that parking is expensive. $12 all day. I think it's about $1.50 per hour. Not sure.

I'll be there from about 5 am till 8 am tomorrow.

Fishing canal at Kiwanis park seems very safe. Lots of joggers going by all the time. The park is well attended.

But tonight the biting stopped about 7 pm. Got dark at 7:30. I didn't catch anything but there sure are

big ones in there. My technique was to toss bread in the water and wait till I saw feeding (they did, big boys), then I'd toss

a floating bait (basically bread) in that area. Didn't work. Ducks are a bit of a nuisance. Got there late last night. I'll try earlier tomorrow,

    probably about 5:30 or 6.

I'd love to have some company if you want to join me at the lake. I'm not going to recommend the canal

till I have some success. If you have canal experience, you can show me your techniques. If you can make it

that would be great. Anybody else is welcome too.

  14. Day one, AM. I spent a couple hours in the morning at Tempe Lake. There are fish better than 5 lb in there. I forgot to bring my scale so I can only guess how big the mirror was that i caught there, but it was somewhere between 15 and 20 lb. My guess would be 18, but I'll claim the 15. That's good enough for me. Fun fish. The intitial run was very slow but steady and loooooong. I thought I would run out of line. I'll try the canal at Kiwanis park in the pm. Then I'll go back to the lake tomorrow am. I gotta go to work at 9 am right at the lake, so I'll do that in the am. I'll report back on canal activity.

The thing I found curious in the lake was that there was something nibbling the bait (corn). In my experience, carp might play with it a little, but they don't nibble. They either eat it or they don't. Maybe I just haven't been doing this long enough, but that's how it seems to me.

The picture with my profile is the Tempe Mirror.

  15. So, how did it go? I'm just down the road from you in Des Plaines. The fish in the picture came from Des Plaines river. My PB (17 lb) came from there too. The DP river is not real big here in Des Plaines, but it has some stuff in it - - - I fear nothing like your PBs. Did you get those guys any where around here?

  16. Thanks for the offer and suggestions. If I were spending a week in Tempe I wouldn't mind a trip of 30 miles. Pleasant looks great, but I'm in town for only 3 days and will stay local since I'll only have a couple hours here and there to toss a line in. You mention "local canals". That was mentioned in other posts, too. I see the the Tempe Canal on Google maps, but it looks pretty dinky.

  17. My company is sending me to Tempe for a 3 day class. I could have gone to a number of towns, but I like the looks of Tempe lake and the class is in a complex right on the shore. I'm takin' a couple poles and gonna get me a couple Tempe carp. I like the prospect of a decent size mirror. Never caught one.

My questions: Is any part of the lake any better than any other? One post liked the bridge at Rural Rd. It looks like it's hard to get right down to the water to land a fish due to guard rails. Is that a problem? I kind of like the looks of Tempe Beach Park West of the train tracks (except for the guard rail problem). Any opinions on that?
