Wow!
that looks like great fun, really cool indeed!
Tim, did the rod come in kit form or did you literally make it from scatch?
Will have to start calling you the "Anti Tackle Tart"
Cheers,
Wayne
hi wayne,
I tend to keep my eye open for old rods that need restoring or cane blanks. I usually make the metal parts, ferrules, butts etc on a lathe. My dad and grandad used to make rods so I have a good stash of antique parts too. The rod in the pic has a blank my dad found, some antique rings, metal parts made on the lathe and cork rings you can still buy from a rodbuilding store. Think there are a few places where you can buy new blanks but they are really expensive. Was thinking of making the blanks myself, got all this old literature with mkIV dimensions and how to make them

I'm not an expert on centrepins Dave, but if you want to get one they don't need to be expensive to use for carp fishing. The one in the pic is an old is grice and young, it has a ratchet that can engage and disengage and a adjustable drag. The drag isn't much use for carpin' it's better to use your thumb when playing fish. It takes a while to get the hang of them, I remember as a kid spending lots of time with line up trees and big tangles, thinking about it I still do. It's hard to describe the sensation when you hook a fish under the rod tip, you have like this direct contact you don't get with a fixed spool.
Cane carp rods are cool too, they usually have a test curve of 1.5 to 1.75 lbs and a through action. The cane basically dictates the design. Don't be fooled though you can put loads of pressure on a fish if you lower the tip a bit and play them more off the butt section.

beautiful fish Bryan , you should come over to the states and go fishing with us all sometime
-
very apropriate the list is in the "stories" category, some of those fish on the list are some of the best fish stories I've ever heard
-
the first fish I caught with a long shank nailer had a completely trashed gob (mouth), all torn up and bloody. It was a pretty big fish and several CAGers saw it and were put off using them . There may be some truth to the fact that long shank bent hooks can damage carp mouths. I've used them occasionally since and caught some fish on them without damage. I'm guessing the the damage only happens a small percentage of the time

has anyone been fishing toledo bend? fancy giving it a try sometime

looks like it is time to move on town lake's better days are over
-
I was kind of hoping something would happen at the bottom end of the lake and a previously unknown population of 40's or 50's would appear, oh well maybe next time
Tal's 46 and the 44 caught by mr Bannister seem to be year round 40's, the others caught seem to be only over 40 in spring

only 3 fish over 35 !!!!!!!! that's a bit alarming. Think they were the same fish as last year, just with smaller bellies and less spawn. Maybe next year they will be bigger again
