  1. WTG Tim

gotta love those fish on the float :D

    miguel and pat,

you'd love this place, plenty of float fishing and awesome looking fish. It's a rare place, you never see anyone, you can just have a smoke and walk around looking for fish. There are weedy bays, islands, bars, a stream running through, just loaded with interesting spots. Got the fish movement all worked out in the afternoons, but can't quite work them out in the mornings :D

  2. How about some more details, Tim? Line/leader/hook/float/shotting pattern/bait? Were you fishing on the bottom?

It is a great way to catch fish but I don't think I get as many as I should. Any pointers would be appreciated.

here's a run down of the setup paul:

the line is just 15lb big game, it's pretty weedy with trees in the water, have to give the fish the biggun' sometimes :D.

for a float I use either a modern waggler or an old goose quill held at the bottom

the float is attached to a link swivel that runs on the line and I use a stop knot to set the depth

all the weight is 2 to 4 inches from the hook, usually refered to as the lift method

The weight is one of those black bullet leads used for bass fishing (1/8 oz?). This has a float stop on one side and the swivel from the hooklink on the other. Guess you can use shot, but I don't want to damage the line

the hooklink is like a regular no knot carp rig, usually braid coated or uncoated, just very short (2 - 4 inches)

hook is a little tiemco 2457 (thanks mr kerwin)

bait can be whatever you want, but being doing well on maize

I set the float so about an inch lies above the surface, the float usually rises up and lies flat on the surface when you get a bite, then sails away

that's about it really, when I get tired I just use the same rig but take off the float and put a 1 oz lead on :D

  3. Ken,

What are you doing catching pretty fish like that on an old timer rod and reel.  Is that a solid fiberglass rod?  How old?

    Phone

the rod is early 70's vintage phone, it's 10ft long hollow glass with a test curve about 1 1/2 lbs. Plays fish great and still has loads of power in the butt section, very light too. The rods relaced the cane mkIV's from the 50's and 60's, cane rods are great too, once you get over the fear of them snapping :D

here's a beauty from the summer, the light caught this one just right :D
