  1. Ah the DF Longbow, SWEET rods. I recommend that anyone that is a Daiwa fan that does not want to go to the high dollar Infinity DF's take a serious look at the Longbow DF's.

If you can get three DF Longbows for a good deal, JUMP ON THEM !!

If they are out of your price range, then YES do give Iain a call and talk with others on here that own the Saxtons and get their hands on opinions on those rods. As I said I can not comment directly as I have not handled those rods personally, but they come highly recommended by some great anglers on here. Plus if Iain says they are top notch , then I certainly trust what he says. He is someone on this forum has had many years chasing carp in the UK on some of the tuffest waters and has continued to catch very well in the USA and has always treated me very well over the last 10 years with my numerous Delkim purchase's.

  2. Rebel, for 30+ lb. fish from a river fishing heavy weights , heavy PVA bags and dealing with stearing large fish away from snags AND trying to wear down big fish in current ?

Reels...again I'm a Shimano fan, but do own a few Daiwas. For big fish , hands down the ORIGINAL Shimano Big Baitrunner Long Cast. This reel is a tank and I have had many 30+ lbers from rivers on them. Second would be Shimano Ultegra's I have 10000 and 14000 sizes and the only difference between them and the LC is the LC is a baitrunner and the Ultegras are instant drag , so it would be what you prefer and like ?

Daiwa baitrunners, I love my Linear X 5500's , one of the smoothest reels I have ever handled due to the double paddle handle and the 5500 size holds 570 yrds. of 12 lb. test. For "quick drag" reels from Daiwa, I know a few that swear by the Windcasts ....I have always eyed the Basia QDX45 myself , but they would not go well with my SHIMANO rods.....bad Karma to cross brands like that for me..lol. Plus they are over $500 each and for that i'm going to spend the extra cash and buy the top of the line Shimano MgS reels.

    Rods....

Well I would NOT fish anything under 3.00TC (fast action) and would lean more towards a 3.25 - 3.50TC rod that is of HIGH QUALITY that is not soft...something with lots of backbone and faster action (only bending in the tip section).

All rods are NOT created equal. I have some 2.75TC rods that are made for distance casting and are stiff, I have some 2.75 TC that are made for "playing fish" and are soft action and bend all the way to the butt section. Which goes back to the Black Widows, they are nice "players rods" for those who do not like stiff fast action rods and prefer a soft rod that will absorb fish better under the rod tip. I have handled the 3.25TC Black Widows and I would compare them to soft action 2.50-2.75 TC rods. Now I have four 13' 3.00TC rods that feel heavier TC than most guys 3.50TC's , its all in the blank material and manufacturer.

What rod would I recommend for heavy river work ?

Anything from Shimano or Daiwa in either 3.25 to 3.50TC OVER $200....or if you want to go deep into your pockets, look at Century carp rods :icon_smoking:

Also talk to Iain (Savvyman) about his 3.25 and 3.50TC Saxon's , again I hear great things about them , but personally have no experience with these rods.

Rods are just like the brand of trucks we buy or football teams we root for, its all personal preference and i'm VERY opinionated which is why sometimes I get into trouble on forums like these....some take my opinions the wrong way. Just like if you asked me what brands of rods I wont buy, that would start a WAR on this thread..lol...again its all personal preference and what YOU want out of your carp rods and want to spend. The sky is the limit. My personal dream set of rods is the Shimano Tribal Ultra in 13' 3.75TC......they only run $1800 each. Maybe if I sold off half of my carp rod collection I could by a set ..lol.

Good luck in your future rod purchase , please do let us know what you get and what you think of it.

  3. Alex: 34 rods, and 36 reels !! must be like a case of double phenumonia - no saving you I guess ! I retract my medication comment, it obviously will not work on extreme cases like you - though perhaps a lack of wall space to hang those sweet reels or storage space for the tasty rods will work ! You know, you're going to need a bigger house !

    Tight Lines!

    John

Yes sir, already been looking at a bigger house, only issue is that I already have the full basement as my "fishing cave" , so wouldnt a bigger house just give me more room that I will have to fill up ? Its never ending , but I love fishing tackle , its my addiction !!

You should see all the rest of my tackle, I dont just fish for carp and I have a thing for St. Croix rods and shimano calcutta reels..lol.

  4. Certainly explains it! Those kevlite blanks would equate to a $400 - $600 rod today...

Agreed Savvy, those are by far a top notch rod that many companys try to COPY now a days.

Yes 34 rods is a bit over kill, but so is 36 carp reels..so what do I do ?

I agree that the Mad Dragon / Black Widow is a great rod for those wanting to NOT spend a ton of money on proper carp rods. I bought a pair for my son and paired them with 4500 Daiwa Regal Z's and they work great for him starting out carping. Im just saying do not expect them to handle a ton of abuse or cast like $200 carp rods.

As far as the question about Saxton rods, I personally have not handled one yet, I have heard from many very good anglers on hear that have had some great catches on them and have used other brands in the past swear by Saxtons. I almost bought a set from Iain last year when he ran the special for those who had purchased Delkim alarms from him also, but sadly I did not take advantage of this great deal. Again, Out of all my carp rods I have grown to really love my Shimano's(90 % of the rods I own) and the Tribal and Technium range is my top picks. I have owned many brands , some I like , some I do not . Its all in what you want from your rods.

I fish through out the Winter when the carp are slow and bites are light and I have a set of rods/reels for that , I also have 1.75TC float/surface fishing rods and use all the rods for certain conditions and fishing situations.

Is this needed, NO, but it sure helps curve my addiction..lol.

  5. Robert,

Just noticed this...."I use a 2.5tc northwestern Kevlite rod all the time no problems"

THATS why you have had no issues with your 2.50TC's, your comparing apples to oranges, your Northwesterns are of a MUCH higher quality blank than those Black Widows, now it all makes sence. Nice rods, bet they handle fish like a dream, lucky dog, better hang onto those baby's.

  6. Alex your are absolutely correct... The only way to make low price rods is to minimize on the carbon weave and fill in the gaps with more resin - its (well almost) as simple as that!

There are NO rods selling for under $150 (and more in some cases) that have blanks capable of sustained and repeated casting (or playing of lots of fish) of such heavy weights. If they don't break then the blank will soften up within a couple of seasons.

In most cases carp rods in the USA see 10 years of 'UK' type carp action in only one or two seasons.

THANK YOU and yes, most cheaper rods will break down and become even soft, 2.50TC rods can quickly become 2.00TC rods with heavy weigh casting.

Robert, sorry I hit a nerve, i'm NOT saying that you have to pay $300 for a rod , pay whatever your budget allows. What I was saying is that if you want a rod that will handle every day abuse casting heavy method balls then buy a high end rod rated for higher Test Curve.

I personally like 13' rods and for heavy work I prefer 3.50TC , now I do have some 13' 3.00 TC's that will out cast most lower and mid range 3.50TC rods, but its due to the higher quality blank in my rods and the super fast action of the blanks. For this then you must pay for such quality and as Iain said, NOTHING under $150 (my opinion is $200) will withstand repeated heavy casting far over their factory ratings. A 2.50TC rod is rated at optimum casting weight of 3 - 3.25 oz.

We weighed a 2 oz. feeder packed with meilie (ground corn) and it weighed around 10 oz. (of course depending on how large of a ball you form around the feeder ). Some wet mixes can weigh even more.

I truthflly have been looking at the new Daiwa Infinity DF's since they came back out with the 13' 3.75TC version , these would be for long range method feeder work of course, but then I got to thinking about it and if I need to reach past 100 yrds. and want to fish method feeders, I will just use my Viper Euro baitboat to run the rigs out..lol.

Each company that you see thats popular (Chub, Daiwa, Shimano, Nash, etc.) all make lower end affordable rods for anglers just starting out of for those not wanting to put out a lot of money for rods, thats why they sell rods like Black Widows and many anglers buy them up. Just as they do with reels, but dont expect the same performance, castability , durability and longivity from a Black Widow compared to an Infinity...same with Daiwa Regal Z's compared to Daiwa Basia's.

This is why I personally own 34 carp rods ranging from 9' 2.25TC Stalkers to 13' 3.50TC 50mm butt rings, to cover ALL methods and techniques of carp fishing, from small fish in ponds to large fish in very big rivers and everything inbetween. Well that and I have bit of a tacklaholic issue , but thats for another thread.

    Good day gents,

Sorry to hear about your rod breaking, If going with the Daiwa Mission X , go with a higher Test Curve and you'll do fine. Those are really nice looking rods and I almost bought a pair to match up with my Daiwa Linear X reels , really like the look and feel of those rods.

  7. Disagree all you want, the Black Widows (AKA Mad Dragon) are very soft action (and cheap blank) rods and YES it takes a certain "technique" to casting such soft rods (I also own 2.25 and 2.50TC rods). I much prefer fast action rods and they also must have a certain casting technique to cast method feeders 100+ yards that those soft rods will never reach no mater how you cast them..lol. Those soft action carp rods are made to fish close range with lighter weights, they are by no means casting machines.

Just like the old Cabelas Predator 2.25TC rods that many guys on here used for years, I personally would never cast a 2 oz. method feeder (possibly 6-8 oz. when packed depending on your method mix) on any cheaply made low Test Curve rated rod, but again I have only been in the carpin game 10+ years, so what do I know ?

  8. Black Widows are great for those not wanting to spend much on carp rods, but truthfully I would not recommend throwing any weights over 2 oz. and NO method feeders, but thats just me.

As far as what everyone prefers, I'm a Shimano fan tried and true, get with Simon at Carp Kit and have him order you a set of 13' 3.50TC 50mm butt ring Shimano Tribals (I recommend the Tribal Carp model). These are no wimpy , low end , cheap ,soft rods and will throw the heavier 3 oz. method feeders packed with whatever you like a LONG way and beg for more !!! And a deal at $300 each :icon_smoking:

  9. Gee whizz! How much do you charge for an autograph? I might even pay postage..............

"Tell me why I should send you an autograph" and maybe I will....LMAO !!!

Thats alright, a carp couch is not for you anyway Craig, they dont make it in PURPLE :fight:

  10. "PS carp couch............. is this for real?"

Yes, you can find it at CARPKIT.COM

    "Overrrrrkilllll"

Yes it is......IF your only catching teens, 20's and MAYBE one carp over 30 lbs. a season, for those of us that catch WELL and have landed fish to mid 40's , its a needed bit of kit when chasing big fish .

  11. "The ultimate mats are the carp cradles IMO. I had one in the uk and it was perfect - have seen them with fish in to over 60lbs and there was no way it was goign anywhere. the probelm being that the bigger they are, the harder they are to carry."

I agree, thats why I held off on buying the Nash Carp Cradle, way to big and bulky when broke down and takes too much time to set up...give Simon over at Carp Kit a shout, I talked him into stocking the Avid one and its AWESOME !!

  12. Can I sleep on it? Does it double as a bed chair? Does the carp get a remote control with the couch?

That is one fancy piece of kit. I already pack enough as it is though.

Nope cant sleep on it, but its been tested on RAINBOW lake in France with fish over 70 lbs. on it, so it will handle any fish us North American carpers can put on it .

I pack a lot of kit too, thats why I have an Infinity barrow, I can take all the stuff I want now!!

  13. I highly recommend any type of landing mat where ever you fish , I always have one with me while carp fishing. You could have gotten the same padded landing mat from Resistance tackle here in the USA for $12.50

    https://www.resistan...detail&ref=2617

or this BFS one from Big Carp Tackle for $9.95, also in the USA

    http://www.bigcarpta...&cat=264&page=1

I prefer the roll up mats like the ones I posted above, but for long stays , where multiple fish on the bank is the norm and where big carp lurk, I will be taking my new Avid carp couch for ultimate fish safety. Flat mats are ok, but they dont keep fish from flopping and rolling off , not like this one.

(thats a Shimano Tribal buzzbar pouch laying on the couch to show scale)

You can buy an Avid carp couch at www.carpkit.com or just click here http://www.carpkit.c...vid-carp-couch/

  14. I have tried all the USA made boilies, my honest suggestion if you want to bait up with GOOD boilies, roll your own , the boilies here leave a lot to be desired compared to UK boilies. That is unless your fishing the same waters or popular swims that have seen hundreds of pounds of these boilie brands named dropped in this thread.

My style is more like Savvyman, I chum with maise and other particles and I fish pop-up boilies over the top and do very well.

  15. "If you have the D-LOK fitted I just clip the alarm in place or screw into position on the buzz bar or bank stick and then the hard cover pulls off relatively easily."

Yep, what Iain said. If you dont have the alarms on buzzbars or banksticks, the cases are very tough to take off with the snag bar back plate.Once I have my "black box" (hopefully soon :Old:)then I wont worry about the cases for the alarms.

  16. Very nice reels ! I much prefer the instant drag over the horrible attempt Shimano did with the baitrunner II system. I have a pair of the XTA's and dont really care for them, but love my XSA's. Its either full baitrunner or instant drag for me.
