  1. nightcarp021.jpg

inspired by 2carp's fishing at night i gave night fishing a cautious try....not an allnighter but a latenighter

    my first night carp

challenges in the harbour were the bathtub effect waves...lots of boats

short handled net 6inches...3ft drop to the water...8 foot rod

lying on the pier on my belly mounds of bird excrement beside my face i met the challenge

i was checking my line to feel if it was hung up..tugged a couple times with my finger .....nothing then my line zipped out

a sideways run that led under the 150 feet of pier...blindly in the dark i worked the carp back out into the open.

wierd thing happened the carp raised its fin and stiffened for the photo...upon release it rocketed off

but i was worried about harming the carp when it stiffened...only been out of the water for a minute max.

fishing at night has its advantages...less people, cooler, your more in touch with the feel of your line and rod...instinctive.

thanks 2carp for inspiration i am hooked to try more adventures at nightime.

  2. a buddy informed me that while out on lake simcoe south end near the holland marsh may12 he was spotting 100's of massive carp.

my understanding is that they receive very little interest or pressure from local fishermen.

i do not have a car or the time to properly pursue this opportunity....

but i would suggest to any of you who are finding your local swim over pressured or your in need of a change of scenery....

south lake simcoe might provide an excellent series of carp field trips for you.

the carp may only be in that area to spawn right now...my best guess...whether they are willing to feed at this point i am unsure.

if you make the trip please share the experience thanks.....

  3. ambitious....

fishing in the dark must make the long first runs by the carp very unnerving...

how do you know where they are going??

guess you gotta know the local obsticles well enough to guide the carp through well being blindfolded....

sounds like mass chaos to me

you have inspired me to give er a try and hope for the best and prepare for the worst...a swim .....

  4. toronto islands

    centre island pond by farm

    3pm until 6pm

    sun and cloud

    warm 20plus

pressure dropping from a peaked high

    1/3 carp on line

first carp online fought for couple minutes....lots of long runs

hook set was lost in battle

second carp was fought for 7 minutes lots of runs and escape tactics...3 attempts to net...successfully landed

third carp fought for 6 minutes...on a netting attempt it evaded net only to wrap line around log...3 feet from shore

concerned about its safety i cut the line and freed my friend...unfortunately he has a new lip piercing ...i was able to cut the line between him and the log about 2 feet of line attached to the hook...best i could do.

equip. used a st croix 8ft steelhead rod, daiwa whisker ss tournament 1600 reel, 6lb mono line, size 11 owner circle hook

bait used ...del monte canned corn..summer crisp.

all and all a nice day...

spent the earlier part of my day being beat 0/24 in faceoffs with bowfin and 0/4 with pike encounters

i am happy that i am accepted by carp cause the rest of the pond rejected me completely

    meet my new friend...

  5. sounds to me like she just needed a hug .....she approached you....she fooled you into catching her and giving her (slime and all) a big hug.

    she's a beaut....

  6. i wanted to meet up with you guys at the islands....

but my buddy could not go ....on call for work....could only fish 1/2 day

    islands were out....

    i fish the islands weekly....

the carp this time of year show up around 11am or later in the shallows....

the barometric pressure was gonna change to a low at that time too...and boy did it ever turn off the bite.

deeper water required due to barametric pressure changes...but it needed to be warmer water this time of year

so we chose the hern power generating inlet in the outer harbour of toronto.....

    this is what happen....

    april carp...brings spring smiles

carp fishing april 14 outer harbour/spit

    8am until 4pm

i got there by ttc and alot of walking kearney by car

carp were there when we got there(earlier might have been better)

note i seldom see carp b4 10am at the toronto islands but in deeper water along toronto's shoreline they are up early.

we fished corn....little ground baited and a little on the hook

note ...i notice they prefer to eat off the weeds than the open sand areas...

this presents a visual problem...bait so that the carp can see it as well as smell it...bait can get visually lost in weeds.

popping up your bait above the weeds..6 inches can help....use yellow foam on your hook with corn...

we got action in the first half hour....kearney (master basser)...noticed trout ...fished for it and got it on...

head shakes and runs.....unfortunately trout was lost...kearney and i pumped and andrenaline awaken...

1o minutes later i see my line moving...drag is set really low...i pick it up...fish on....carp

as i fight the carp it takes some solid runs...i tried to slow it down...tightened the drag too much like a novice.

the line breaks as the carp wraps it around himself and uses the old tail to break line....6lb test mono...

20 minutes later....my line goes out again....fish on ...another carp and she heads for bridge pilings....

i work her back with the butt and body of my rod...6'6'' med st croix avid...with a repaired tip that is failing again...spun around sideways....

i get her to run another direction and i slowly advance her away from the bridge....careful this time to allow drag to let line out on the carp crazed runs....yikes...she keeps fighting for ages....my face is red and i am a little out of breath...

i am low on the confidence scale about landed her....i never caught a carp b4 where we were fishing...but i knew it would be tough to get a fish out as there was a good drop to the water, a fence issue in front and behind, as well as only 3 feet of landing area in between.....the fight was prolonged to wear down the carp sufficiently to successfully land her and to handle her without injury to her in such cramped landing area.....

big thanks to kearney who landed her in a net i made using a painting pole and an old net frame and new large basket netting

the two poles of the net are shoved together not attached....easier for transport ..not so easy to land the fish with.....

kearney scooped under her as she was all tuckered out.

    hook removed...pics...pose...release....

    see pics and video

we saw trout, salmon, pike, bass, and lots of carp...

we only caught the one carp.

i think when i caught the carp she sent out warning smells cause we did not entice more carp to eat....

every fish we saw around the baited area was wary from this point on....

the barometric presure changed and we saw carp sleeping on the bottom in lots of places...

rest of the day was slow.....

mnr dropped by asked for our licences...2nd time this year??....great to see them out.

first carp of the year for me....april 14...one week earlier than last year....

    see video here:

note on the carps cheeks both sides were holes damaged by bacteria or by lampreys i am not sure...

last week i saw a salmon with a huge lamprey attached to her.....in the same area....

  7. Dave Clark,

I’m sorry about the recent experience you had regarding fishing along the Waterfront. We hope the attached press release gets the ball rolling in a constructive fashion. Complicated topic, it seems; but it shouldn’t be.

  8. my first fish of the year for the last three years have been carp in march....hope for the same this year....

one of my early fish last year.....i was going for carp with corn....carp spooked and disappeared....only to

be replaced by a small pike that hammered the 3 kernals of corn on a hook that i had begun to reel in.....that being said ...

it appears that i catch the wrong fish on the wrong baits.....or maybe my presentation is a little off?

  9. feb18 1:30 pm fishing the inner harbour around spadina quay...outer walls for pike.

i was pike fishing with a #4 silver willowblade mepps and a red plastic bead ahead on the line.

    i get two simultaneous follows....they weren't pike but carp...28 and 30+lbs

they followed the lure along the bottom...i was reeling super slow....one stayed on the bottom

one followed the retrieve to the surface...looked at me..broke the surface...appeared to take a gulp of air

and dived back down to join its partner.....they then continued to cruise along side the wall at a depth of 10 to 15 feet. curious fish they are... if i had had another rod rigged for carp i might got some action...

will carp go from curious mode to feed mode or is curious mode a defensive and cautious investigation?

  10. long story...have found varieties of asian carp alive in tanks in toronto spadina/dundas area where i live...reported to mnr ....eventually charges were laid....my real worry is that in the past when people wanted a type of fish in their home area they released them into their local ponds...being able to purchase live asian carp enables this practice...

pike, bass, carp have been introduced to new bodies of water this way so many times in the past.
