  1. Thanks for posting!

Yes the grass carp was sterile but is it not worrisome that they have chosen to make the north shore their home when they were released on the south shore. The invasive species management are constantly taking water samples to check for DNA from Asian carp...these released carp must cause false samples and concern for escaped carp from the shipping channel. Would love to catch one...just not in the Great Lakes.

  2. Awesome and impressive work! Thanks for promoting the sport of fishing, educating about carp, mentoring others especially the kids further into fishing. Sounds like this yearly derby is growing fishing as recreation and promoting conservation and education. Those who gave their time and energy Thank You from all of Ontario for your efforts.

  3. TUFAs Assignment is the rule change not the tournament so I do not know the details. TUFA's secondary assignment is the political will of the City Council, Toronto Parks, Toronto Port Authority and TRCA. Hands are full with those details. I have said too much as is but now may not be the time to stir up this issue as progress is being made.

  4. Two rods for carp fishing.

The MNR management has been asked to consider changing the rules in order to bid on the world carp angling championship for 2016. All the right arguements have been made and excellent people from MNR, TRCA, OFAH, Toronto Sportsman Show and Toronto Urban Fishing Ambassador have been lobbying MNR mgmt all summer. We are trying our best...whether its good enough we shall see. We will know by early 2014 at the latest. Holding the World Carp Angling Championships in Toronto depends on the two rods rule being perminently changed. Kinda like bidding for the Olympics...the Governing bodies want to see improvements in the sport for the host nation.

You think we have been not posting pics of carp cause we can't catch them? No way! Been to busy fighting the good fight for fishing on about 7 fronts...lucky if i get fishing once a week.

No promises....how optimistic am i? not very....but...you gotta try to get what you want.

If we pull this off well you can come to Toronto to see the World Carp Championship in 2016.

  5. My buddy Kearney had never been...i had been once and caught two fighting carp that will forever be burned into my memory....i wanted more...i wanted my best fishing buddy to have that experience. We planned for a week and altered work schedules etc.

My buddy just bought a new jeep...its first fishing expedition.

The day before we go i had an accident at work...a co worker drove into me with his vehicle and pinned me at the waist until the frame of his vehicle tweaked alignment and blew in his back window and twisted the frame. If that sounds unlucky it wasn't...we were having an inspection and the inspector was in the same position i was...i was able to push him out of the way in time. I was not hurt other than deep bone bruising on my hip, severely strained back, sore pelvis and hip. We were going to the "whirlpool" the next morning...nothing was gonna nix our plans...Next day all hell breaks loose at my buddy's work and we did not leave to go to whirlpool until mid afternoon...but we were going. We get to the parking above the whirlpool at 4pm...i have medicated and am prepared to scale down the decent in the rain and mud. The path was washed out in several places...but we got there. First two hours no carp...but we caught 7 smallies and 6 drum on worms while i watched for carp to enter the swim filled with free corn.

Finally sightings! Changed to a 13 foot Daiwa carp rod, Shimano baitrunner, 20lb fluoro line, #1cicle hook....these are the heaviest gear rigging i have ever fished with...i expect a fight.

I had the rod braced in rocks and the baitrunner engaged..light drag...i was helping my buddy tie some leader rigs and my rod shot into the water...i grabbed the butt of the 13ft rod before it slipped into oblivion. You woulda sworn i had my buddy's new jeep on the other end of the line....the fight was long and challenging...the other anglers stared bewilder upon what was at the end of the line...i think we converted them to carp anglers...landed a 23lb carp. We filmed the landing i will post it later this week. Only the one carp was caught...but my buddy is a believer in the "whirlpool" now. so i figure we will be taking another trip soon.

For those who go...the hike is excessive...pack light..but gear heavy for strong carp.

Gobiland...tons of gobies drag your bait around...or the current does if the gobies leave you alone for a second...snags and more snags...expect to lose gear...yes its challenging and frustrating...but the fights are epic and the scenery..."made by God"...if you are prepared for hardship, have a positive attitude, use common sense around dangerous waters, and like to be challenged to the breaking point of all your equipment...this experience is for you.

we scaled the path in the rain and the dark...i was so sore from my injuries the day before that i left a tear on every step of the ascent. Pain and suffering was worth the memorable experience. This fish outing ranks #3 on this years list...but this has been a stellar year.

Sidenote: next day i went to empty our fishing line recepticle at Grenadier Pond in High Park only to find a thousand dead fish...i watched carp taking their final breaths. I contacted the mgmt. of the Park, MNR and TRCA. They have been on site all week testing water, fish and taking inventory. The pond will be restored and set on a path to recovery once we ascertain the cause of the fish kill. If your in the Toronto area please do not fish this pond until fall or next spring.

  6. As pretty as they come.

    Congratulations!

Remember your the one that was hooked for life...the carp regained its freedom....you the angler have begun the endless carp quest.

    Introduce a friend to fishing!
Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free, February 16-18, 2013 (12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Monday) and July 6-14, 2013 (12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday). During all other time periods, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase a valid fishing license to legally fish in Ontario.
There has never been a better time to introduce a friend to fishing!

  8. I like the new wave rig....waiting for more 1867 stories in the future...action the first time scouting an area brings instant happiness.

  9. What is really interesting is that you have lots of carp and a great diversity of other species as well. Thanks for posting that Dave.

yes i see pike and trout regularly in areas of current....lots of bass in marina areas look around floating mooring stations...again access by boat improves chances...the Coca Cola investment will build some more shoreline access areas in the future but that will be two years away. lake trout chase bait fish in around a suken ship on the most south eastern bay of the park on occassion too...with a little TLC from the TRCA this Park will only get better as a fishing destination...the last 15 years its been for the more adventureous...facilities are improving...washrooms openned two weeks ago at the bird watching facility half way into the park. now if they just installed water supply facilities throughout the park...i suggested that last week!

  10. Last note.....anyone allergic to red ant bites may want to bring an epi pen or avoid this area all together....the heat has stirred up the ant army...i was bitten no less than 40 times...it was not pleasent...wading in waders or boat or inner tube and you would avoid these problems and have far greater access than we have. canoe or kayak or tube would be ideal. There is no shade by the water...if its hot ...you need sunscreen and as much water as you can carry....seriously it reminds me of the westerns where Clint Eastwood has been in the desert without water for days....i was so thirsty all day.!

  11. June 23 we hit Tommy Thompson Park once again....

A fishing buddy who was flyfishing caught a 43 lb by wading out into the bay....i saw the pics...monster...he was fishing 200yards from us around a bend further into a bay. Broke his rod tip landing the beast...a guy in a fishing kayak trolling for pike took the pics.

Inner Park fishing 6am until noon ....Peter a 35lb and 34lb and a 25lb....I got five couple teens and three over 20lbs.

    West coast fishing noon until 3pm...Vanna two 25lb ....i got a 28lb and a 23lb

Notes:West Coast was extremely busy with pods of 5 to 10 swimming past every five to ten minutes...some stoppped to eat some were just passing through with mating on their mind...these pods hugged the shoreline....margins were good fishing opportunities late in the day along the West Coast.

Notes:Inner Park margins were best in early morning then slow by noon...the deeper areas held the bigger carp and were better as the day grew older.

Notes:Outer Harbour 4pm until 6pm we spotted carp bigger than my early season 43lb...much bigger...surrounded by 30-40 30lbs....,we were excited until it was reallized that this was not a dinner party but mating area...eating was not on their minds...too bad as we have never seen as many big ones gathered together...i have only once seen first hand a carp as big in my life...here were a bunch...note there were another 100 in the 20lb range....

At times these huge 40 to 50 lbs were within five feet of us...we were awe struck...like sharks stealthly cruising...These carp will mate and then return to the deeper areas and we will not have access to them again until next spring i would assume. We actually were satisfied just observing them...it was an incredible opportunity.

a few pics from this outing...

  12. july 6 and 7 we are doing family fishing days, you can join us for those or we can try to meet up july 8 or 9 after 4pm

wher in Toronto are you gonna be?

  13. great report! the 15 to 20 range have been superb fighters this year. everyone I have fished with and myself have thought they had a PB on until its in landing range...I think its fabulous that the best fights we are getting are from the most abundant size range...means lots of excellent fights and sore arms by days end. I do not know why they are full of more energy this year but they sure do have more feistiness and strength over last years fish.
