sat on one of the carp highways for the first half of the day and went 8/15 curiously they were all smaller than the norm....no biggies...later in the day I located a swim wher ther were only biggies and no smallies. the smallies are in eating mode and the largies are not eating. found some high thirties but they would not eat bottom , top, mid . I just could not be frustrated long today with so much opportunity. I saw trout and pike and it was the bass opener but who really notices when you have "carp madness" like I do. the summer carp habitat has established...weedbeds are huge...just got to get this spawning thing over with soon. the lagoons have a fill and empty current feature and I noticed that the carp feed when they fill and travel directionally with the current when moving.

  2. Figured this news article was similar to the Hamilton scenario and the same one repeated at Tommy Thompson Park Toronto....Choose the Birds over the Carp because the birds can been seen easier by the public. Carp are an introduced species (150 years ago)....many of the ducks and waterfowl are new to these areas because of climate change....but lets kick the carp out....same ignorance that calls some fish trash fish....oh the self righteous Humanity of it all.

  3. scouting areas to find if the season has arrived for them often comes with blank sessions but we scout with the memories of past successes at a swim and the value they meant to us....scouting is a result of passionate angling...hungry for an edge...confidence in ones skills...sense for adventure.

early season scouting is a challenge to ourselves and a fishing outing that brings alive the senses.

awesome report and keep up your scouting.

  4. Sunday June 09

    5am to 11am

Peter and I went to try an earlier slot...

Coyote casing rabbits ran within 10 feet of me on the paved road through the park.

I saw no less than 2 dozen rabbits

beavers spent an hour swimming back and forth through the swim.

as soon as I put the go pro camera in to film them they went away...logic was if you try to photo they will disappear and we can fish...worked.

I caught 3 lost two and Peter lost three and caught two.

Highlights 15lb mirror and a 28lb common caught but losing a mid twenty mirror...unstoppable run to a breakoff.

Peter catching a personal best 33.5lb that took him around obstacles forcing him into the water waist deep and ruining his camera and 2/3 our pictures lost.

sunny days early fishing is way more productive at Tommy Thompson...we viewed 70 carp approx. swim through our swim.

  5. Scouting at Tommy Thompson Park is a slow process...we only get out one day a week...this week we were at a charity fishing event for Big Brothers and Big Sisters called Catch A Dream...Pro Angler Dave Chong is the organizer and it was held at Lake Simcoe. I mention this event because it was one by a Kid who caught a 26 pound carp....

Sunday we got out to Tommy Thompson...early...turns out early is way better...5am to 1pm the carp eat but it slows down the later it gets. We confirmed our previous locations with several catches....We later tried the western beach side of the spit....midway along the park...reward a 30lb carp in 15 minutes of trying....then the worst of the days rain came and we did not get bites thereafter. The western coast has sand beaches for 1/3 of the coast...no snags...lots of room....no people...windy at times yes...waves yes during storms but my buddy still got a thirty....lots of room for a CAG visit. The biggest draw back we found was washed up garbage and red ants if one strayed too far back from the water's edge...you would not want to camp here nor are you allowed too.

I tried to gain access to shoreline of other areas that looked promising and used up a quarter of the day trudging through narrow paths and getting eaten by red ants and lots of other bugs...oh well that's all part of the process.

we saw lots of rabbits and unique birds ...snakes and other wildlife...plenty of the unexpected...keeps you entertained on the long and winding road...

I have been told this park may open 7 days a week soon ...like this year...the debate is almost resolved.

Conclusion.....the western shoreline holds enormous opportunity....the eastern shoreline we have not even tried yet.

Our proven grounds has turned out to be a carp highway...new pods every hour...

the inner lagoons offer lots of opportunity but only to found fishing holes...the carp are in choice spots and 70 percent of the lagoon is snag territory.

Note of interest...While staring across at Cherry Beach it dawned on us that the shoreline and the lake bottoms and structure were similar there....Cherry Beach is red ant free...easily accessible...overnight camping possible...

we will try it out very soon.

I only caught 1 23lb carp as it took me 6 hours to realize I had equipment issues...I knew I was losing fish...I just did not understand why...I blame Peter my fishing buddy cause he kept catching carp and distracting me from my problem..lol..he caught 7 carp and lost a few too. We spend half the time fishing and the other half scouting or analysing what were seeing and how the conditions are affecting different areas of this huge park.

At our secret not so secret swim that we visited on the way home we spotted 7 to 10 carp over 40 and another dozen over 30...we baited and left them alone...conditions were not right...but we wanted to give them some freebees.

as much as people try to catch here they give up when the carp ignore their offerings....its the toughest place to catch but the most rewarding...all the conditions must be met or your not gonna catch a thing....the window of opportunity is that small.

  6. just got home from work to see this mess.

sorry to have been the cause.

i enjoy conversing with all three of you and do not want to offend you.

its a forum where we can sort issues out or explain things.

i share information and experience to make fishing more accessible to others....WHY?

WE were banned from fishing in Toronto just last year.

the city with the largest number of fishing license holders in Canada.

95 percent of Toronto's fishing license holders do not fish Toronto's shorelines or waters.

thousands fish Toronto's shorelines and waters but they were secretive and communicated only for bragging rights.

when our right to fish our own "backyard pond" Lake Ontario or our "kids learning pond" Grenadier Pond was taken away do you think that the largest number of license holders could come together to fight the battle....heck no!

zero sense of community or family...no heart ...no soul...no communication....fear.."i'll go it alone attitude"...everyone for themselves...

a dozen of us closed ranks and fought the battle of our lives on behalf of everyone else.

we needed their help and support but they refused to be counted...no matter how much we urged.

after the battle was won we tried to build a group that could unify the anglers into a community so this scenario would never happen again.

in just 10 months we have an inner core of 73 members from govt agencies and not for profits leading the way

we have another 877 members that follow TUFA .

we have given 1600 kids their first fishing experience.

we have passed city council motions preventing the out right banning of fishing.

we have been successful in our first challenge this spring over Grenadier Pond

we have a recreational fishing plan with our partners.

we accomplished all this by communication, sharing knowledge and experience and building a sense of community and family.

we would rather share the fish and the fishery and clean up after others than to lose it all.

the family is growing and within 5 years we will be a force to reckon with if you were to challenge our right to fish or endanger our fishery or its habitat.

last year cost me personally $12 000. to fight the battle and begin building a fishing community.

to share the fish and the swims cost me a heck of alot more than a few fish...but its worth everything i've put into it.

each fish we catch is that much sweeter a feeling and every fish caught by someone in Toronto means something to us ...it means we can fish and we have a fishery.

i realize this all seems self righteous and a choice we made etc.....but....we had the right to fish taken from us....our freedom to fish....we share to protect what we have fought so hard to win back.

if everyone catches fish cause we showed them where to fish and how to fish then we have accomplished our mandate of TUFA

Tommy Thompson Park had a lagoon closed in February a few years back...to make a bird sanctuary....that particular lagoon was the spawning ground and winter holding area for one third of all Toronto's pike....those pike were hunted down by anglers and/or starved to death...we lost one third of our pike fishery. WE anglers had no voice and those who knew what was about to happen no communication channels to stop the situation. Two years ago they did the same thing to the carp...they closed a bay that was regarded as the largest spawning area for carp in the Toronto area....another bird sanctuary....i am told the carp were removed...i have been told they were removed dead by some and alive by others....the best place to fish for carp we lost cause we had no voice and no community.

by sharing we build trust with other anglers and we give them value to their fishing experience.

right or wrong its the best we feel we can do....

i sleep well at night knowing we are trying our best to protect the fishing rights and fishery of Toronto.

i did not sleep well March 2012 until July 12 2012 if at all.

in summary its a catch 22 in part...supporting why not to share info...but a complete loss if we can not fish at all or our fishery is destroyed without our protection we need an active community of anglers who value their fishery and their right to fish...

  7. Jamie I owe you a thanks...cause after we talked I switched to worms cause we talked about them...I got a sweet brown trout and an awesome small carp...season started slow but is picking up... still learning TT and it is huge...so many swims...it will take years...yes we should hook up soon...next week I am busy assisting a big brothers and big sister fishing derby on lake simcoe but maybe the following weekends. keep checking that swim I met you at ...its gonna turn on big time and its holding 30's...

  8. Sat May 25 Fished Tommy Thompson tough conditions got one 20lb carp at 12:15pm sunny no clouds...30km winds same location as last week.

tried two spots that other carp anglers regularly use to fish in order to scout and understand more area.

Sun May 25 took a friend to Tommy Thompson to practice taking guests....i took him to my spot and gave him the primary spot and i set up in a secondary spot i had not fished but felt it had some key ingredients....well did it ever....i threw out some plain corn...baited my hook...cast...went to put my rod between two sticks and set the baitrunner...turned back to face the water to hear my drag screaming and a 25 lbs carp tearing across the bay....i have never caught a carp that fast ever....my buddy had left for the washroom....i had to locate the net and unpack it while running along the shoreline as my carp had turned the corner of the bay around a beaver dam....i get it turned around for a run towards a bridge and fish gate...no mercy for me....but it all worked out fine. I was able to get a 25lb and a 17lb. My buddy got a 23lb, 20lb and 14lb. we then went exploring but at the least likely time to find carp ....no more caught....but i learned todaythe carp are there at 7;30 am...i also learnt that i need waders to tap into a huge opportunity of large carp...piecing such a large area together will take some time.

Note last years harbourfront location became active yesterday for the first time this year....i had a dozen carp feeding but two large pike swooped in and scared them off. this became active at 8:30pm last night...first carp seen there all spring...scooby doo.

  9. great sign....means your fishery is being studied and managed.

I believe they will be tagging some selected species in the Hamilton area...similar tracking study as Toronto. This will be on a small scale this year and if Toronto's Study reaps positive results then Hamilton's study will be ramped up. Urban angling is being studied to be properly marketed to help offset the dwindling number of fishing licenses being purchased due to the bubble of anglers over 65 who do not need to purchase a license anymore. Marketing to urban anglers was a topic we discussed in depth 3 weeks ago as an alternative to charging seniors a discounted license which we explained would have a very negative effect. Who takes the kids fishing? Grandma and Grandpa...that's who. I owe my Grandparents so much for introducing me to fishing...among other things.

  10. Awesome way to spend Victoria Day....looks like the fireworks were your carp catches during the day.

All of you must of had a "blast".

    Congrats on the catches.

Please view post: Urban Fishing Management Plan - toronto recreational fishing.

carp tag telemetry mapping found in the fish community workshop #4 pages 13 and 14

TRCA tagged more carp this year. Valuable learning opportunity.

At the end of this study i will be given full disclosure of the studies results.

awesome work and vision by all partners involved in this study.

Toronto Recreational Fishing is being re-built. First step was Fishery Management.

Our group Toronto Urban Fishing Ambassador is an active partner in re-building Toronto Recreational Fishing

Carp is our sustainable fish.....please come visit and fish until your heart is content.

  12. Sat May 18

Got out to Tommy Thompson for another exploration

    3 hours 4/5 carp landed

    16lb / 8lb / 26lb / 20lb

i believe this is a solid swim.

also found a secondary location watched carp rolling in what i percieved was the mating grounds.

a previous attempt found access to the western shoreline beach. looks very promising... endless swim.

previous scouting around a bay i know holds hundreds of carp landed me into red ant territory...no fun...boat only this area.

many ideal carp areas are out of bounds due to bird sanctuaries but the lagoons and the beach are huge areas of opportunities.

Saturday Sunday and Holidays only 8am until 6pm....as long as its only on those days i believe they are relax on the times unless you park inside gates.....then your locked in or out....parking on street outside park.

TRCA studies show fish telemetry indicating carp travel through these areas often and quickly.

more scouting required....i will try one day a week for the next 6 weeks.

  13. May 07 while fishing for pike we got a strike and a miss by a 46 inch pike....we circle around and its following our lure then its wacked by the TRCA electro fishing boat that pulled up right beside us and stole our fish....I wasn't angry ...I was in disbelief....the guys were about to scream at the TRCA but I waved and said hi....I know a few of them and they are doing a study for us.. . TUFA is part of the reason they are doing the study...I can't complain...they are fulfilling our science part of our fisheries management plan.

so yeah we had a trophy sized pike stolen from us by the TRCA electro fishing boat....yeah we feel your pain.

it might as well of been a bear stealing our pike...we felt so helpless.

  14. I just spent the day with the MNR, TRCA, OFAH, Toronto Parks and Rec, the owner of the Sportsmen Shows etc.

I was told it was the best meeting in 8 years and best attended.

One of TRCA's top guys confirmed the carp fishery around Tommy Thompson is second to none in the west end of lake Ontario.......I will scout and find us some shoreline swims and we will have us a fish in.

I received permission to start passing along info about the studies going on...so over the next week I will post them to our TUFA site and put the link here....tons of info about fishing Lake Ontario on the way.

  15. I went out on May07 pike fishing with my buds and to break in a buddies new Alumacraft boat.

Taro from Fish City Tours is a Toronto Fishing Guide with more passion and enthusiasm for fishing than anyone I know.

Taro took a bunch of Europeans fishing for carp with Len Perdic , Paul Castellano, and Pete Bowman and Angelo Viola last year. He also has taken Bob Izumi out pike fishing for his shows this year.

Taro and I feed off each other for fishing knowledge about Toronto Urban Fishing.

I have taught Taro everything I know about bowfin. We share knowledge about everything else.

Taro knows I love my new interest in carp and the last two years its becoming obsessive.

He took me to Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie Spit) and we scouted the entire outer spit.

Thousands of carp were there within casting distance from shore.

Most areas where they were concentrated in the hundreds are areas where the shoreline is out of bounds for the bird sanctuaries. if you have a boat ....they are all yours.

I found several pods of 20 - 30 carp in shoreline accessible areas....

I will try to find some time over the next month to pursue them and scout the situation further.

the key here is sandy flats adjacent to a steep sandy drop off

most of the spit shoreline and waterline is rock and construction debris but not the northwest side that I am talking about here.

I will see if this is worth having you guys out for ...I am sure it is...lots of straight shoreline for a big group.

I think the carp are eating bird #### near the bird sanctuary...not 100 percent sure but close.

the TRCA reports I am getting show the carp spend winter nearby as well...in the deep beside the flats.

the TRCA tagged a bunch of carp and other species and are monitoring them...I get reports now that I am working as a partner with them in organizing Toronto Urban Fishing.

When they finish research this year I will share it with you.

The shear size and number of carp is impressive.

I was blown away by the incredible fishery at Toronto's doorstep.

With carp anglers catch and release protocol ...I have no reason not to share knowledge of this swim.

    I will keep you updated.

I have a huge meeting with the GTA fishing committee May 09 and I may learn more then....

summary....I have found a "gold rush" vein of gold I want to mine or fish with the fine members of CAG.
