  1. well if that is the shape of your carp to come I think your in heaven this spring and summer. that shape has the proportions we all love in our carp! " We love em big and fat"....that happens to be the slogan for Big Fat Burrito where I work in Toronto and I think it suits the carp you covet and that beauty you caught there. she is wonderful!

  2. awesome write up! we were at the islands on Sat May 04 for my buddies birthday....the centre island pond had 70plus carp and the canal between centre and Olympic had at least 50 plus carp. we were fishing bowfin and pike and caught 1 pike and three bowfin. another friend caught 2 carp. one of the carp was 33 pounds and ripped a hole through my net the size of its girth and we had the line going through the net with the carp that fell through swimming frantically around...we had to use another net with the one I had to net that carp. now I would say that the bowfin caught previously must of damaged the net. the carp are there but you need polarized glasses to see them. the silt being stirred up is making it very hard to see them. but that same silt is preventing them from seeing us.

  3. another picture....my shoes are size 13 for perspective.

thanks again...it was a moment to share.

I forgot to mention I was using #1 circle hook / 8lb fluro leader / swivel / 2 x 1/4 sliding barrel sinker / 8lb fluro / daiwa ss tournament 1600 reel / 8ft St Croix wild river steelhead rod. very custom set up but its what I am comfortable with....that said.....after the struggle I had.... I have put into service a shimano 6000d baitrunner reel.... out of the box...I bought it after Christmas...she is ready to go....

today I have acquired a blow up mat for landing....the rice bags keep the slime on the carp but did not offer the padding I would like to offer the carp....next carp will be offered the deluxe landing pad.

  4. Sunday April 14 caught my first carp of 2013 18lb carp Toronto's outer harbour.

Wednesday April 17 caught a 16lb carp same area...began dialing in my spring technique.

Thursday April 18 in heavy current with a huge storm approaching I had two plus hours to get some fishing in after work. I was getting discouraged as no carp were visible a half hour in....then came the pods....but I lost 5 carp spitting out circle hooks with corn...I watched them pick up the baited hook and spit it out...too much frustration something was wrong with my gear...I re-rigged everything....damn good idea cause within ten minutes the first of four were landed.

in the next hour I picked out my carp targeting them out of the pods.

strong current made every fish a fighter and a battle....I had hazards to overcome but I was very familiar with each one from last year.

    26lb

    23lb

43lb my new pb and first over 40

    24.5lb

    total 116lbs

yes I caught my first over 40lbs she was 42.5inches(length)x 33inches(girth)

I used a mechanical not digital scale...I weighed her in the net three times quickly

I checked my scale out today with known weights and it was accurate.

for sake of argument she was over 40 and to me that is a new pb and this year's goal.

She fought like a stampeding elephant....runs were hard and furious....I had a bridge and pilings to worry about as she ran for those first...I got her turned quickly but at a price....she took a run down current 90 yards with me running after her and reeling as fast as I could while dodging the odd bush...but a treeline came up and I had to stand ground....I eventually tuckered us both out and then got her to the wall....I was up 5 feet from water to surface of ground then there is a fence 3 feet high made of cables....the only gap to net her was back 110 yards and so was my net...I had to drag her back through the heavy current...she used this to her advantage and took me for several additional runs. once at the landing sight I let her recoup in the water in the net...I needed a two minute break too to successfully lift her up...I pass the rod over the wire and lower the handle while reeling...I then lie on my back and put the net through the gap...holding net with one arm and rod in the other I try to match the net and carp together...leaning over the side of the wall on your back with one shoulder over is not too comforting ...but its habit now...I got her head in and she barely fit in my massive net. hand over hand on the net I got to my feet and went to give the net, rod and carp the straight hoist up...first attempt nothing...second I gave what I had left and got her up and over the wall and fence. I did my weigh and took a couple pics and put her back in to recoup. I had someone I knew ride by so I called them to take a pic for me. I took her in the net in the water to where they were cause there was no room for a pic where I was...it was a gentle downstream ride ...got her out and remembered she was too heavy and slimy to hold up so I knelt for the pic rather than risk dropping her. She was released and had lots of energy.

She was huge....reminded me of an elephant carp...big eyes...thick across width and long. The pics do not do her justice but then really it was the experience and moment that I had with her that I will not forget. My arms, shoulders and back will not forget those four carp anytime soon...was I ever sore at work on Friday.

After returning carpus elephantus I gave another try before the approaching storm...dark skies overhead, thunder, wind...light rain....success another catch.

released the last one ...packed up...got on the bicycle and the sky opened up in a downpour...hard and furious....I was clean and wet after the 5km ride home in the dark and rain.

  6. I found this linked onto a Facebook Blog "This River is Wild"

I copied the essentials and posted here.

In the late 1960's when science was science and not politics as much as its become, experiments were done on carp as to their catchability....

    Abstract:

Angling in drainable ponds for tagged carp, which were reared at a hatchery, revealed the following phenomena: 1. When densities were kept constant by returning captured carp to the same ponds, catches per unit angling effort decreased to low levels within less than 100 man-hours per acre. 2. Relatively high proportions of the carp present were caught only once (as concluded from comparison to Poisson probabilities). 3. Numbers of carp recaptured were significantly below numbers to be expected if catchability were unchanged after first capture. 4. When high proportions of the fished carp were hooked and subsequently lost, the whole populations fished for (not only the captured parts) became nearly uncatchable. 5. Catchability of carp one year after being either captured or hooked and lost was some three times lower than catchability of carp either never fished before or fished one year before, but not hooked. 6. The phenomena are considered as an example of one-trial learning: one hooking experience in an individual carp decreases its further willingness to take a bait upon a hook for a year at least.

  7. Most importantly Grenadier Pond remains a fishing destination for kids....its been one of the most often used places to teach children to fish in the city of Toronto for 177 years. The fishing pier is awesome and the 50 meters on eigther side are safe shorelines.Bass spawning habitat work was recently done by the TRCA and it would of been a shame to lose it all. No boats are allowed on the pond and its our largest inland pond in Toronto. TUFA will be involved in some serious stewardship work this year to get the situations under control. As much as there are problems at Grenadier Pond the MNR can not provide anymore resources to such a small and less significant fishery. The MNR does make a weekly appearence and the reality is that its more than they can afford to be doing.

By restricting waterfowl nesting grounds and fish spawning habitat from anglers it will only serve to lessen negative complaints against anglers and improve the fishery for the kids. The areas being restricted are areas that would optimally be fished by boat not shore and since no boats are allowed ...the fishing opportunities were very limited anyways. A lot of line tangles and snags were left in this area and it is too tough to fish successfully unless your super skilled. Many anglers were in the area targeting spawning bass out of season...why allow them access to the area? There was a huge movement to ban fishing completely at Grenadier Pond and we feel we came out fortunate to still have access for anglers. WE have a fishing summit in May in Toronto...all levels of government and players in the waterfront...ie TPA, TRCA, MNR, TPFR, Marine Unit and so on. They are beginning a study of Toronto's Shoreline fishery March 08 and will know what we have and where its located and the quantities. I think they must be using last years sampling info and data as there will not be alot of fish in close to shore in early March. We will keep you updated and most of all i would love to get you guys to our harbour in April and May for a few Carp outings. Thank you for your support and interest in our Fishing Crisis...we hope the drama will come to an end soon and it will be only about fishing. By the way i have two reports of asian carp in our Toronto Waters in 2003 that were likely put- ins...i will attach the TRCA report....poor TRCA had to defend themselves as we did in the attacks on fishing.

  8. turtles are being caught and removed ...some are endangered.....bass are taken in bucket loads out of season....birds have gone missing and the injuries to others that survive would lead one to believe that fishing line was not lost in such quantities and always around the birds feet...some lines had multiple hooks ..7-9 hooks..persons were observed rmoving buckets of turtles. poaching began being a significant problem over the last three years.

  9. Feb 25, 2013 A Summit to Discuss Banning Fishing at Grenadier Pond was held.

Fishing will not be banned at Grenadier Pond!

The Kids Catch Fishing Day in July will continue!

Two line recepticals for waste line will be installed by MNR
North End of Grenadier Pond will be Restricted from fishing.
The North end of the pond is where the few carp in the pond spawn and waterfowl nest
Solutions to the poaching problems and the injury to birds and wildlife are being proposed for further study.

Municipal By-Laws would have to be made and enforced.

i will not get into the proposed ideas as most will not be implemented.

The biggest change would be the restricted areas.
The areas proposed are bird nesting areas and places with excessive snag potential. A comprimise that makes the other partners at High Park happier and less likely to attack fishing.

If TUFA puts some effort into this i think we will be sucessful at a workable solution.

We negotiated a really difficult battle today but our willingness to concede fishing territory and allow for restricted areas showed we came to the table to work together with potential partners and not fight as enemies. We were open to catch and release and other possible solutions to the poaching problems in Grenadier Pond.

Today was a successful step forward in securing Fishing opportunities and working with the other organizations of our comunity.

  10. great to hear someone is catching....Toronto carp swims iced over with floating ice....tried pike fishing today...no follows....

We have been promoting fishing in Toronto the last two weeks at the fishing shows.

Angelo Viola and i had a great talk about Toronto carp b4 he left to London for The Big One.

Monday i have a Meeting at Grenadier Pond where the local conservationists want to ban fishing to protect birds.

City Parks and Enviroment Committee will be present and i will be alone in defending recreational fishing.

Our partners were not invited nor welcomed after we asked to have them invited.

I spent a month preparing for this encounter and have missed out on alot of fishing time.

Hairwigs post reminds me to push forward ...fishing is worth the fight....nothing comes easy when carp fishing in the winter...you have to make it happen....fishing in Toronto is about the same.

Hairwig i am inspired by your efforts...thanks!
