  1. one of the biggest myths in angling is that lead shot from anglers damages bird. the rspb in the UK had a couple of x ray pictures of some swans with leadshots and line going through it's throat and used this along with some research about lead being found in the birds stomachs to say that it was anglers doing the damage.

when the autopsy shot was checked out, none of the it was split and it was proved to have come from shooting and not angling.

If you are worried about how lead disolves in water then check out it's solubility and you will see that it is almost completely unreactive in water and therefore doesn't actually disolve to any level that will do any damage. not to mention that the majority of leads are covere din a plastic coating which makes them even more unreactive.

if you are fishing a snaggy swim then use a drop off lead - that way you don;t leave a lead and hook in a fish as opposed to just a lead in the water.

this whole lead poison thing is a load of old scaremongering as far as I am concerned - just another thing for people to worry about where the problem doesn't actually exist...

  2. I don't get using goalposts when only using 2 rods?

why not use just the bank sticks without the buzz bars?

I will happily use a 2 rod buzz bar - as long as you have a fairly thick bankstick then you don;t get much twist.

If you want to buy individual banksticks then check out the wychwood ones that Sail sells. Can't go wrong with them IMO - nice and thick - augur point and fairly lightweight.

saying that though - if money / weight wasn't a problem I'd go for stainless as it last for ever. I'm still using original solar stainless banks sticks and bars that're over 20 years old.

  3. am pretty sure the BS is overstated (you will be able to see more on the korda website)

I used it for a few months last year and liked it and will probably spool up with it again after using some crap berkley line this year.

Sinks really well for a non fluro mono however it is very very stretchy.

Another thing to note is that it is very very shiny when it comes off the spool and if fishing in clear water and bright conditions straight away, it stands out in the water like a sore thumb. After a few sessions it will dull down a bit though.

  4. I hate to burst your bubble but if memory serves me correctly I dont think that TH has done a days work in his life...beyond writing in more recent times anyway. :)

    that's not true.

pretty sure he worked as a kitchen hand, postman and laborer early on before he picked up his consultancy deals.

his work now is fishing - that's what dynamite baits and ACE tackle pay him to do.

  5. never said he did - I'm just saying that when it comes to people that are paid to just go carp fishing and make a healthy living from it, as far as I know, in Europe, there is only one that I know of.

Possibly Martin Bowler can be added as well (a true all around specimen angler who doesn't just fish for carp).

these guys may be absolutely focused with their fishing and because of that, they may not comply with what society deems as 'fitting in' but they have plenty of friends in the fishing world (and outside of it). The only reason Terry has 'dropped out' as it were is because he was given the opportunity to. I'm not saying there aren't better anglers out there, just none that are professional anglers.

I should also add that there are plenty of other full timers in the UK as well - they aren't paid to go fishing as such and will be financially supported by themselves, their family or worst of all, government benefits.

it takes a special, focused individual to fish full time IMO. I did it once and got bored very quickly and completely lost my enthusiasm.

I would like to think that when I get to 60, I will look back at my life in my house with kids and grandkids with a good career behind me, rather than alone with a few photo albums full of fish.

  6. with respect to professional carp anglers in the UK - I think I am right in saying that Terry Hearn is the only angler who actually gets paid a reasonable wage to go out and catch big carp. Ian Chilly Chillcott is another who seems to do ok but I think he is subsidised by an army pension.

All the other pro's either support their consultancy deals through tuitions or actually performing some work for their respective affiliated companies or have business interests / their own bait / tackle companies within the angling area.

I think you are right about the no family etc - I once read Terry say "You have to be single to be single minded" and that is how he approaches his fishing for sure.

  7. get well soon Nick - hope you're mended and back out on the banks / playing hockey ASAP.

don't rush it though mate - make sure it's mended properly before you get back out again.

  8. They were fishing with the guy's from carpology magazine I believe.

By the way, welcome to the CAG corndog!

    caught it last night

It was Jerry Bridger from Angling Publications (Carpworld and Crafty Carper), Roy Russell (Carp Talk) and Rob Maylin from Big Carp.

Such a shame there are so many ad's in the show - I think there are now more than actual footage. Showed about 10 mins max of actual fishing.
