  1. gonna get me a fly rod and reel I think - not just for the carp but for trips out on the rivers as well.

do I need to get a really high weight or am I ok getting something a little lighter and making sure I have plenty of backing on the reel :D?

I like the looks of the sets in Sail - the Greys sets look pretty nice.

  2. A lot of debris???? That's a new one on me... how are you storing your alarm?

deffo get all sorts in there - I had an original set a few years back and have found dead spiders, leaves, bits of weed etc after spending a few years on the bank - any crap that comes off your line (especially if you are using braid) - it certainly happens and I found it effected the sensor which Delkim fixed for about $10 each which was a nice touch.

  3. Delkim and Korda are very similar........they have a great marketing department...........they can trick almost anyone into thinking you have to have it! Ive seen all the DVDs, they make better coasters than anything else! :)

to be fair on delkim, they do next no no marketing at all in Europe. you will never see delkim consultants or any articles in magazines relating to them - just the odd advert in the magazines and mentions from Danny on his DVD's and I'm pretty sure they're mentioned on there cos Danny chooses to use them and not because they pay him.

they have got their reputation on the back of word of mouth alone - much the same as the steve neville's.

a bite alarm is a bite alarm to most and as most canadian carping is done in daylight hours and with only one rod, any extra features that are aimed at other countries will be wasted on us.

things like being able to identify via a remote receiver, what rod has beeped and if the beep was a drop back, pulled forward, a line bite (a combination of both) is an absolute godsend when you are tucked up all warm and dry in bed, out of view from your rods on a cold and extremely rainy winters night. the vibration alert on their sounders is really good too and I found that was what used to wake me up when I had remotes on my bedchair.

I'm no marketing victim but I think if money was no object before I heard about the sirens and Ace's (that only really came out properly last year), I would have jumped at getting a set of TXI's.

  4. from what I have been reading, the sirens and the ACE alarms seem to be as good, if not better than the delkims.

I loved the delks and always thought of the TXI plus as the ultimate bite alarm but I hear lots of horror stories about them packing up in the rain.

for reliability though, I wouldn't look past a set of steve nevilles (I used to love mine - basic and did the job superbly) - if money was no object then I would look at the Ace's and the Sirens.

  5. I love grassers, real torpedos, they fight like hell & the initial run is like all hell broke loose!

have to admit I hate them because of the way they go absolutely mental when you get them in the net / on the bank. been beaten up by a few grass carp :(

  6. Your right Shawn there is a balance,I'v been on the side where I worked way too much and it was not good.I really had to sit down and look at my life. You have to enjoy life,to work your butt off to make somebody else rich will put you in a grave fast. We're here for a good time, not a long time.

bang on - work to live, not live to work :)

have to say that I seem get them a bit mixed up at times.

your new job looks very interesting - fantastic looking rig! :)

  7. condensation is the main thing - if you are fishing in the cold and have battened down the hatches, getting damp from the condensation will only make you feel much colder.

Should add that only overwraps where the 2nd skin isn't touching the inner one (like with pramhood bivvy's) will have this work.

If it is just a wrap over the top of a brolly it ain't really worth chit!

  8. Those Grey's nets have had poor long term user reviews in the uk. I would suggest looking elsewhere at something like the Gardner outreach with it's extendable handle or the new trakker nets which look great too. They are both very very light and nice and easy to move through the water and from what I have read on the uk websites have had some good reviews.

  9. for pier fishing get a euro net and deep mesh - then as shawn mentioned, use the mesh to lift the fish out - then you get the best of both worlds.

never had an issue with mine.

  10. Was thinking this morning - what are the biggest fish the Ontario CAG members have caught this year?

I can think of Lorne's two big ones, Tristans mid 30 - any other 34lb+ fish?

Is this a typical season for big fish in southern ontario or a bit slow?

  11. If you have a but of time spare then I can thoroughly recommend these video's of a recent trip to Rainbow Lake in France by the legend that is Kevin Ellis.

They're over 2 hours long in total but they will give you an idea of just how extreme (and different) the fishing is over there compared to here in Canada.

Some of the methods are ingenious (mainly created by the german's) and you have to admire how they have come up with these different tactics to catch the fish from the lake.

I thought it's a great watch that really gives you a bit of insight into the lake.
