  1. moon - have you gort spare spools for your reels?

A good way to ensure your backing / line matches up is to use a spare spool and reverse load it.

wind the required amount of braid onto the spool and then wind the backing on top of it until your spool is filled to the correct level.

Then wind the line from this spool onto the one you will be fishing - backing goes on first and then the braid will go on last leaving you with a perfectly filled spool.

best thing is that after you have done this once, you can leave the backing on there and when it comes to respooling, you just strip off to the backing knot and start from there :D

  2. I have found one of the best things to do when using braid is so slightly underfil the spool. Braid is typically thinner and more supple than mono so doesn't seem to be effected by drag on the spool and since I have been underfilling my spools I have hardly had any wind knots and haven't noticed much difference on my casting distance.

  3. Maybe.....looking at the other photo shown briefly in the video made me wonder too. Whatever, it is a very impressive looking fully-scaled.

    Iain

stunning looking fish but looking at the shadows on the picture he would have to be very strong to hold a 40 that far out from his body (especially with his build). then again, when they look like that, size shouldn't matter!

  4. chub and greys are the same company and I am pretty sure they are the same product.

only thing that puts me off about digi scales is that there is a few things to go wrong (calibration, batteries dieing etc)

  5. Hi Mark. I haven't seen the petition yet but will look for it however IMO a list of names doesn't mean chit to decision makers. They want to know where it can make them money for , save them money or get something from it personally. I wasn't implying that you guys do the work. Apologies if it looked that way more a case of putting your names to it in an official CAG capacity. I just thought that TangledLine actually made a difference with the fishing ban in Toronto by putting a very good case forward and playing the politics game. I wondered if we as a group could try and do something else? Cheers Jamie

  6. The obvious answer would be that the angler looks shifty and coould do with a wash / shave :D but on a serious level...

When members have emailed the MNR asking about being able to use 2 rods, the standard reply email we are receiving contains the following statement -

A number of factors would have to be taken into consideration, including the enforceability of any new regulations, whether to designate certain areas to use two lines, the ability to distinguish carp anglers from anglers fishing for other species, etc.

Now I have been thinking about what would be the easiest way for the MNR to be able to tell if someone is fishing for carp or other species and thought it could be a good discussion so we (Lorne or Mark ) can present as a proposal to the MNR as some guidelines? I realise that there isn't a one answer that fits all, so some sort of compromise should be reached / sacrifices made.

My immediate thought would be a few things -

The first would be that the angler concerned using 2 rods would have to be ledgering (Including method fishing) for the carp using a weight on the line. I know there are plenty of other methods to catch carp with but when I am fishing those ways (float fishing, fly fishing, free lining, surface fishing etc) I can only use 1 rod effectively so there wouldn't be the need to use 2 when fishing those methods?

The next would be that the angler concerned using 2 rods would have to be using electronic bite indicators. I think a few people may not be happy about this one but with recent tackle advancements an electronic bite alarm can be bought for $15 bucks and if anyone can afford to use a couple of rods / licenses they should be able to afford a couple of cheap alarms? I think this would have strength with the MNR as it works in 2 ways - an MNR officer can easily see the alarms and it also shows some sort of conservation by the angler fishing as they would easily be alerted to a bite on either rod.

The last would be that if an angler is ledgering for carp that there is some sort of seperation between the hook and the bait being used and the hook must be completely visible from the bait. This would include hair rigs, d rigs etc I know not all methods for catching carp use these rigs but in turn it is easily the most effective method of catching a carp and would be easily distinguish between anglers after other species (if you can afford to buy 2 rods and 2 licenses then you can at least learn to tie a hair rig).

what do you think guys? would this work? is there anything else that the MNR could use to easily identify an angler so that they can immediately tell that they were fishing for carp? we want to make this as easy as possible for them so in effect it will cost them nothing and they (and local business) would make more money while not putting the fish stocks at risk?

  7. I like the challenge of using 1 rod, I wouldn't mind being able to double up my chances and double my catches with another rod though!

the biggest thing about using 2 rods is that you can vary methods accordingly to improve catch rates. pop up or bottom bait? corn or boilie? yellow bait or red bait? heavy feed or single hookbait? long hooklink / short hooklink? long hair or short hair? big hook or small hook? some people may scoff at the thought of all these things being changed but believe me it does make a difference on the day and can be the difference between a blank or a big hit.

one of the ridiculous things about the MNR rules at the moment is that if needs be, you are allowed to use multiple hooks on your one rod which is great for the fishing (if you wanted to do it) but not for the safety of the fish....!??! i think you are allowed 3 baited hooks so there is nothing stopping me fishing a length of leadcore with 2 chod rigs attached to it with different baits on and then a PVA bag with a bottom bait on the end of it. I wouldn't do it though because of fish safety but I would be perfectly within my rights to. In the UK this would be banned and you would have to fish one baited hook on 3 different rods.

I might actually write a proposal for them and see if it would help....

  8. I have replied to an earlier mail from them stating that I noticed I had got a standardised answer that looks like it has been sent out for years so have asked for an update. i have also suggested that if they haven't come up with any idea's about how to distinguish between carp anglers then they should maybe contact the Canadian CAG chairs of the Angling Trust in the UK.

I await their reply with baited breath... :)

  9. Seeing as I was the last to leave I have to claim full responsibility for this. Im sorry, i made a mistake, im human. It won't happen again. Flame me all you want.

that's decent of you to admit to it Nick but to be fair on you, the others should have taken their garbage when they left as well.

well done for manning up to it though <thumbs up>

  10. That's not bad litter , check out this pic from New York http://www.carpangle...showtopic=43082 POST # 9 Now let's hear complaints . I applauad ALL who don't believe in littering , BUT , trust me it could be ALLOT worse .

ken - the litter in that picture is quite obviously what has floated down the river and has not been left by a bunch of anglers :( - don't defend them FFS!

any litter is bad IMO - it makes the lakeside look ugly, no matter how much is there. I have always placed myself as a conservationist as well as an angler and when there are debates taking place at a city level about banning angling on the Toronto shoreline, then anglers leaving litter is only ammunition for those who are trying to ban fishing.

  11. Could've fit all of that garbage in the bucket and just tossed the one bucket in the garbage on your way out, its really easy . Sad to see it guys, especially from CAG'ers.

there's even garbage bins on the path, not far from the swim. probably a 30 second walk.

the saddest bit is that it isn't the first time this has happened either and going on how defensive people were the last time they were accused, I can't believe it happened again :(

  12. Initially I was angry when I read what Shawn has written and now I realise that I am just pretty sad :(

FFS boys - sort it out! These actions give ALL carpers a bad name. How on is the CAG supposed to try and promote carp angling in the area if you are doing this kind of s hit?

You don't seem to realise that something like this will undo all the hard work that Lorne and Mark (plus others) have done over the last few years??????

  13. No, you're not "guessing"........just making assumptions then jumping to conclusions.

making assumptions and jumping to conclusions? there's a word for that. it's called 'guessing' (arriving at an opinion without knowing full facts) - I was wrong - sorry about that :D

either way, if I have libelled him or not (I don't care - he can try and sue me - I would be confident that my claim would stand up in a court of law), for someone that contributed massively to modern day carp fishing through the publication of his books and idea's, he has next to no respect left within the sport today.

compare him to the likes of hutchinson, springate, macdonald, yates, ball, walker etc - he probably did more than any of them but is never spoken of in the same way. I wonder why that is...?

savayman - that is the picture I was referring to regarding the russians using the hair rig. Bob Davis discussed Lenny in an interview in Carpworld a few years back and then Tim Paisley wrote an editorial a couple of months later talking about him too. Is a very interesting read if you haven't seen it and well worth tracking down.

  14. float fishing Arvand..........float fishing lol...............never a hair on my hook! Wink wink!

interesting you mention that shawn as I have been thinking about hair rigs and float fishing - remind me next time I speak to you as I'd like to see what you think.

  15. Are you quite sure you want to say that on a public Forum? I'm not sure that your use of parentheses will necessarily guarantee immunity from litigation! :)

    Iain

actually kevin has successfully previously sued the daily telegraph for libel back in the 80's for an article relating to him stealing wels catfish. I am guessing that by questioning my quote that you have no idea about the man or are a close friend of his and have very rose tinted spectacles :D

If he wants to take the forum to court then I am sure I could pull together hundreds of people as witnesses (I think a fair few would pay me to get the chance...)

If the mods want to delete it then go ahead but to be honest I don't think they have much to worry about...
