  1. I'm not the one spouting off that Competition is the be all and end all. You're the one saying competition is everything, period! If you judge people by their list of competition placings at the bottom of their profile then I guess I'm a failure :( I know it's hard for you to comprehend but not everyone needs to measure themselves against others. I'm happy fishing for my own goals. I just prefer not to tell everyone else they are wrong if they don't agree with me.

Now this is slightly disingenuous isn't it? At the very minimum you seek approval from others by posting and sharing your successes...but each to their own and all that, I don't even weigh fish when I fish for fun...and hardly ever photograph them....funny old world innit?

  2. Here are the results for big 4 wcc fall qualifier. 3 teams out of 20 plus teams. 2010 2nd place, 2011 1st and 2nd and 5th place, 2012 3rd, 2013 big 6 2nd and 6th. 2013 WCC spring 75 hr tourney big fish was caught on ........ "The Puff" 2012 WCC angler of the year, (combination of total weight, big fish and big 4 combined) 1st place team packbait member.

plenty more but just don't see the need to brag.

Only one team win after all those events? Conclusive proof that there is more than one way to skin a cat! :)

  3. they are useful. I bought one just to keep them from scattering around in my bags. I used to stick them in small bags but they eventually broke. Now it has its place and cant damage anything else in the bag.

any other questions I would be happy to answer(im not being sarcastic or rude)

Who would put their leads in a padded bag and neglect to protect their other more valuable items??

  4. The few verbal paylakers and paylaker wannabees on this forum are paylaking's worst enemy. You all make paylakers look and sound like the most close-minded bunch of fishing muppets on the planet. It's a shame really for all the other paylakers out there, especially those that once used to visit this forum.

Thanks for the very kind words. I guess since most everyone on this forum is chunking some kind of basterdized Pack its time to kick the paylaker out?

Seeing that you have nothing to learn and you have been foolish enough to share all your decent bait recipes I see no reason to not show you the door... :)

  5. Red (spectrum) maggots have been the most effective and dominant color on the UK match scene for 30 plus years....carp or otherwise...I always thought it was because it replicates the only real 'magic' bait out there which is bloodworm...regardless off how the color 'changes' through the depths it will still mimic the natural......having said that it also might be because that's what everybody fishes with....it's a bit like saying the carp like millet when it's hot at the Paylake, when what is really going on is that almost everybody at the Paylake is fishing with millet....and it becomes a 'natural'...

(For millet you can substitute a seasonal favorite of your choice)

  6. In all honestly, he said that too. If I'm not mistaken to be used in combination with a metal spring, a dash of beer yeast (actually not a bad score in the test) and a real fish eye to finish it of. There you go, the most infallible all American pick up.

When I fished with Phone in Texas he put a load of glitter in his pack bait....it looked really pretty during the cast...

  7. Good Point. When the 4oz of lead, cage, boilie hit the water they do make a splash. Of cours my 1/4 oz and ball of pack isnt quiet, but I have heard that big splashes draws the carp...

Gently does it works a lot of the time...not always though...do you remember that big mirror in the Ohio CAGI Tom?...I spodded maize solidly for an hour...it was a desperate measure to try and force something, it's an old match fishing trick, I was way behind....had nothing to lose....massive full heavy spod after spod, non stop...it was raining maize in the river!! And lo and behold my PB mirror and all the cash and prizes show up!! :)

  8. Carphd,

If that's what floats your boat, more power to you. I prefer to spend my time and money searching large expanses of wild water. I'm quite anti-social (unless fishing with friends) so competitions don't suit me. I like the solitude of being out in the middle of nowhere with all sorts of wild life. Nothing more exciting to me than tempting a large carp from a new area, with no one else around. I fish for my own personal satisfaction, not for trophy's or so I can list off all of my achievements. Yes I do publish some of the fish I catch, but that's the price I have to pay for being a 'Consultant' for a carp tackle company and I also like writing so this ticks both boxes. I've been quite competitive in several sports and won my fair of trophy's so I don't need this 'exhilaration' in my fishing. It's more of a personal quest for me.

    Marcus,

One of the best replies I've seen. I absolutely agree with you that you can be a good angler within your realm, but to be outstanding you need to master many different elements and techniques, whether this is bait wise, rigs or the actual fishing situation. How many carpers can truly say they are good at float fishing, surface fishing, stalking, long range casting, method fishing etc, etc, etc,

I'll be honest and say that I 'steal' as much information as I can from other anglers. For instance, if someone else is catching more than me or having greater success I will inquire as to what they are doing. If it's something I can use in my own fishing then I'll incorporate it. I've also fished with others who are much better at one specific type of fishing than me in an effort to improve. An example of this would be my few sessions with Scott Osmond, who is one of the best stalkers of carp I have had the pleasure of fishing with.

In essence, as I have said before, take what you can from all of the methods and techniques and you will be a better angler for it. Stick your head in the sand and insist that your way is the only way and you will most likely be missing out.

Well said here also, this is why I give Tom some grief from time to time. It is obvious that St Thomas and his Disciples have something great going on that works brilliantly...my simple point is that it doesn't work ALL the time...and it is quite limiting, and perhaps misleading to suggest that it does. It really isn't an either or choice. It really isn't ALL about the bait...

What I enjoy about competitive angling is the challenge of getting the best out of the piece of water in front of you that you didn't choose, you are there for the duration... you have to use all your experience and knowledge and figure it out, or try to...I enjoy those angling conundrums...When it all comes together and fortune smiles on you have had a great days angling AND somebody hands you a bunch of cash and prizes...a combination that for leisure time is hard to beat...

  9. Just think how many nice fish you would have caught, if you weren't peg next to us???? We were fishing with a :pcorn: hand made packbait and puff. You may have even made the top 5. :party0012icon:

First off, well done! You guys deserved a result!

200 yards away is not "next to us " in my book! It might as well have been a different venue....our fish responded to the wind, every time it dropped we would catch, conversely, in quiet times, I called Herk and the opposite would be happening his end...and vice versa! A pattern I can be fairly certain of. Ultimately, five pounds over a 6 fish total brings it down to literally a matter of ounces per fish....a difference which I believe has very little to do with the bait....

There were legit stories of lost fish during the event (including us)....on another day the whole result sheet would be turned upside down....so I don't put too much emphasis on it really....except for Tom because of his bombastic gospel of pack style...he has to be reminded when his ideas come up short! :)

Tom our stats are now 5-2-1 in my favor! :)
