  1. I prefer to use one. I manage to bring one with me. Though nobody is perfect and I forget it now and then.

I think unhooking carp on cool, wet grass does not damage them though it may give them a headache if they thrash thier heads hard. I can't stand watching carp flop around on rocks, gravel or hard cement. Especially if it's hot

I see it this way: If I catch a carp the least I can do is respect the fish and try to put it back in the water fast and safely.

    My opinion exactly :)

  2. I do not beleive the Matt is intended to be used at a weigh sling. I beleive those rungs you are seeing are for pegging the matt down

You can't see it in the pictures, but there is a clip on each side to use as a weigh sling.

  3. Last week I was looking for a landing mat online since most of the spots I will be fishing this year are rough cement piers. I ended up ordering a $20 (including shipping) mat from England. I was surprised to find that It arrived this week, seeing as the shipping was quite a distance. I opened up the package and was pleased to find a lightweight, well padded, large surfaced mat that doubles a weigh sling.

If you need a mat I strongly recommend this, just click the following link http://www.ebay.com/itm/LANDING-MAT-GREEN-FOLDING-STRONG-IDEAL-XMAS-GIFT-DAD-SON-BROTHER-/330654961973?pt=UK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL&hash=item4cfc925135

I believe that the seller has only 1 more left.

P.s, Do you feel that its acceptable for carp to be unhooked on grass instead of a mat? Or do you think mats are always necessary? comment your opinion.

  4. Way to go Bruce, it goes to show that if you carry on through getting snagged and losing fish, if you just stay determined, they will bite. good job

  5. Nick. You can always save the $ and make your own net extention. Just drill a small hole 4 to six inches from the bottom of your net handle. The next thing is to find a broom stick or the equivelent and put a hole through that to. Find a nut and bolt that will fit the hole. Put the bolt through the two of them. Bingo-You have a good peir net. You can put a number of holes in the net handle to adjust the length.

    Thanks for the tip! :D

  6. Nick . I would keep this in mind. The Euro style nets are really meant for use on gently sloping banks . The amount of pier fishing we do here means a lot of hauling fish straight up 6 to 8 feet. The spreader blocks on these style nets are always breaking.

I see what you are saying but my net is really short too! It cant reach at the majority of the spots i fish :( thankfully im usually with tristan or someone who has a longer/bigger one though.

  7. You ordered a net online? and you need another one? :P you must mean you bought a mat and need a net?

whoops thats what i meant, il edit that lol! anyways sorry for the confusion people, i need a net to go with my mat!

  8. Nice fish guys,good job.

Too bad you didn't make it too the fish-in.How are the burns?

Corys index finger on his left hand has a huge blister on it, and my thumb and index finger on my left hand are pretty bad, but its healing now.

  9. We drove down to the chitter on friday night to prebait. We dumped in about 15lbs of cattle corn, then went home and packed for our first overnight session of the year. On saturday morning we arrived at 7:00 and had our rods in the water within about 15 minutes. We sat around and waited, after about an hour of sitting around we saw over 20+ carp surface, and show other signs of feeding. Then out of the blue, Cory's alarm screeched off and he landed his first of the day, a 14lb common

Before he could even finish holding his fish for a quick video, Tristan's delkim sang out a long and loud song. He set the hook and brought in his first of the day, a 7lb common.

Then my Wychwood Signature 6.0 reel began to peel, I picked up the rod but the fish spit out the hook before I could set it. That grinded my gears. Before I could even cast out again, Cory had another one on, a 10lb scrappy common.

I was starting to lose confidence, everyone else was catching except for me...That's when my rod tip bounced. I quickly sat on one knee beside my rod and then my rod took another huge bounce. I struck the fish as best as I could and this time, I had it. I reeled in the 14lb common after a decent fight.

After I released the fish I realized how successful my home made bait was working. I made my own strawberry flavored corn using carp company bait flavoring & tackle's strawberry flavoring (try saying that 5 times quickly lol). I made it by soaking cattle corn for 24hrs, then after the 24hrs adding the strawberry carp company flavoring and boiling the corn for 2hrs. I added salt + sugar then put the corn through a strainer then I jarred the corn (leaving a tad bit of excess flavoring in the jar). I was so happy to realize how successful my bait was. Soon after, Cory hooked into a big one, we could tell by the 15 minute fight it put up that It had to be at least 20lbs. Once we got the common on the mat, we weighed it. It came in at a excellent 21lbs. (It was also missing an eye, yikes!)

Tristan then caught another one, It was a monsoon of carp! This one weighed in at just over 10lbs.

We decided at 3:00p.m that we best move over to the CCIW to set-up camp and start cooking dinner. We went over the skyway, and arrived in about 10 minutes. We unloaded all of our gear and by about 4:00 we had the bivvey set-up, the rods in the water, and full stomachs from our hotdog dinner.

    post-6711-0-61012500-1335133801_thumb.jp

I changed from strawberry corn to mussel because although I had no prior CCIW experience, I had heard from a few people that there was a large amount of mussels there and that carp had been seen digging up large holes to find/eat them. I casted out as far as I could from the point and went back to take a nap in the bivvey. We were all sound asleep when we woke up simultaneously to the sound of my Wychwood alarm screaming. Me and Cory ran over in barefoot across a beach of sharp rocks (It turned out to be worth it). Cory had gotten to my rod before me so he set the hook and handed me the rod. I fought the fish and after about 10 minutes, the fish was still peeling line every now and again. We all figured it was 20lbs atleast. I got the fish to shore and Tristan did a great job netting it. We got it to the mat and the fish weighed in at a little bit over 20lbs. I was ecstatic. I took a few pictures and videos then released the healthy and strong fish.

    post-6711-0-93400000-1335134144_thumb.jp

We sat around for about another 2 hours...(Cory and Tristan switched over to mussel) but we didn't have another bump. We figured that the chitter would be more rewarding at night, and also more comfy. We moved back over and setup camp yet again, this time for good. Cory hooked yet another a fish after about 15 minutes.

    post-6711-0-92274200-1335134302_thumb.jp

Me and Cory decided to take our rods out of the water so we could get some sleep. Tristan kept his in, and it payed off! I woke up at midnight to the sound of "Nick! Nick! Nick!" Tristan was outside of the bivvey fighting a fish. It took me about a minute to realize what in the bloody hell was going on. I ran outside and netted the fish. It weighed in at a beautiful 20lbs!

    post-6711-0-35619600-1335134453_thumb.jp

Sorry I couldn't a clear picture (due to me shaking and the low light conditions).

Tristan took his rod out of the water and we slept in until about 7 in the morn'. (Note that we all switched back to the carp company strawberry flavored corn after we came back to the chitter). We casted our lines back out and hoped for the best. I cooked up some bacon, then I made scrambled eggs with cheese on toasted bagels for all of us. Tristan caught a small 7lber right after breakfast.

At about 10:00 a.m, Cory and I left due to being injured from burns (we knocked over the heater a few times due to our rushing out of the bivvey for a fish) and also due to being cold and tired. The truck was also running on fumes so we decided that we would skip the fish-in. We wish we could've gone and hanged out with you guys for a bit. Anyways, all in all, we had a great time, and I learned that carp company bait flavoring is pretty damn good. (Message me on details if you want to know where to buy the flavoring from.)

  10. Nice fish Lorne.I was fishing there the last two mornings and got eight fish in the two days.Someone has been fishing the discharge at night, because every day I leave I pick up my garbage and more.

I got there this morning and found three tim hortons cups,an empty can of corn and about ten yards of 8lb mono spread out all along the small cement ledge.I know it is snag city there now but how hard is it to put that fishing line in your pocket.I'm sure we've all seen dead or dying animals because of some lazy ass who didn't want to take out the stuff they brought in.Those lazy son's with no fathers piss me off.I might drop by there some night with my little friend.

It's a good spot to fish for big fish and lots of numbers but if people keep littering not only here but we've seen it at our other swims too people will blame the fishermen and close the spot to fishing. We are fighting for spots to fish now all around Southern Ontario, lets not give anybody any ammo.

I'v met some new guys to carp fishing and they told me of an old guy that gave them hell for leaving garbage behide and they didn't want to make him mad.Way to go Lorne, good job.

Anyway I feel better now and now I'll post a fish I caught the other day at Red Hill.

    Nice post, and fish.
