  1. Hi Joe,

    http://cpw.state.co.us/thingstodo/Pages/StockingReport.aspx

If you checkout this website you can see all lakes and waters across the state of Colorado and when they have been stocked with 10"+ trout.

Rather than scroll through 20 pages of information, you can type the name of the lake or water into the "Search" box and find things quickly that way.

I do not see where Adams County Fairgrounds has been stocked with trout in the past year or so though. Back in 2012, after it had just been stocked, we could see massive schools of trout boiling near the surface, was pretty darn wild !

Note: CPW have been cutting back lately on put & release stocking on waters that get especially warm, as the trout honestly just don't do well.

I know a few people have been skunked at the Fairgrounds these past few weeks - even a couple that ran a belly boat with sonar and only marked a few schools of fish.

The Fairgrounds can be GREAT fishing, or it can be a blank fest for sure.

Don't forget there are a number of lakes in the complex, including the "Fishing is Fun" pond, a bit further up the road.

For baits/tactics, i'd go with Fisherwood's suggestion above and add to the mix, waxworms, I know that's what my neighbor got a real nice 16" rainbow on last fall from Adams. Remember, stalk the margins, especially once the reeds start growing up out the water again - you got to move around that place to find the fish sometimes. Try near the inlet over to the right side, as you come into the complex - i've seen some anglers doing well over there.

    Best of luck !

    John

  2. OK, i'm having a brain fail, where is the sign-up for the upcoming "Big-4".

I tried going through CAG Store - Event Registration.

There is a "Big 4" listed there, but when I try to register it gives me the error:

"You received this error because you are: Either not Logged in OR Not a CAG Member. (OR you've already purchased this item) If this is not the case, please contact support@carpanglersgroup.com"

Most likely human Finney user error ? I haven't purchased it yet, and i'm logged in ...thoughts ?

    Thanks!

    John

  3. Another great episode Mark and thanks for the shout out on the USA carp scene and the Arizona 40 by Bryce Gabriel. Oh what irony, Bryce's girlfriend, Kristine Vogel, topped his capture a week later with a stunning 40 lb 5 oz common. You go Girl - showing the lads how it's done !

  4. CALL TO ACTION: The State of Colorado has begun the review process for fishing regulations.

NOW is the time for you to complete the survey and put in a good word for Carp Fishing in our state.

Whether you would like to see our rod limit increased from 2 to 3, changes in laws regarding the use of PVA bags/mesh, would like to see slot limit and creel limit protection for carp, the formation of "designated trophy carp fisheries at Chatfield, Pueblo and Cherry Creek reservoirs".

NOW is the time to make your voice HEARD.

So, please take a few minutes from your day to complete the survey (link https://www.research.net/s/5yearfishing) and give carp fishing in Colorado a Fins-UP!

    Thanks!
    John

  5. "To treat carp with respect, promote the release of trophy size carp and encourage others to do the same."

    The message is spot on.

What we need to consider is how we spread that message without alienating or offending others.

As advocates for this message our own behaviors, postings, photographs and videos are an excellent medium to spread the word. Our conduct at the bankside, how we interact and speak with others, the care with which we treat our own captures. When we host a fish-in, or an event, everything we do is in the public eye.

IMHO it is the best vehicle we have to communicate this to others, it not shows respect for the fish not also for our fellow anglers, whom as Tom has said, are paying their license fee to fish as they choose. Did I just agree with Tom ? - think I need more coffee!

    Tight-Lines,

    John

  6. Dave, though distasteful it may have been, as you said, at least they were releasing the carp. I always endeavor to demonstrate through example. If people see you using nets, mats to unhook the fish, weigh slings, then that opens up the chance at dialogue as to why. I have also, on more than one occasion, helped an angler land his fish (he didn't have a net), brought it over to my mat, we unhooked it, weighed it in a sling, and back she went after a cell phone photo for the happy angler. There's always a way to educate, sometimes just think outside of the simple "unpopular lecture" on how to do it.

  7. From my own meagre boilie making endeavors, sieve those dry ingredients and keep accurate notes, e.g. how many grams of X, how many ML of liquids, especially in small batches, it makes a big difference in the final consistency. Look forwards to seeing some of your home-made boilies!

  8. Fisherwood, the Trout Unlimited guys do their Carp Slam charity event each year. This is a pro-am team fly fishing event, the amateur paying big $ to fish with the pro. No prize money, proceeds going usually towards restoration projects on the river. I think the entry fee is a $400 ish for the amateur. There are also incentives and encouragement for each amateur to raise additional donations for their team, some years individual anglers manage 4 figure donations. It is a great event for sure.

  9. This is indeed a great step forwards for carp fishing here in Colorado. With a $50/angler entry fee, $1000 cash payout to winner - with other prizes provided by their sponsors. This event will certainly help raise the profile of catch & release carp fishing here in Colorado. Tighline Outdoors are a major player in the tournament angling scene in Colorado, with regular big $ events throughout the year, including their "Ice Addiction" series.

I have personally spoken with Nate @TLO many times these past few years and have the greatest respect for TLO stepping up and putting this event on their schedule - it takes "balls" and a forward thinking vision to see that carp as a species and "Tournament Carp" fishing has a future in Colorado. Perhaps one man's "trash" is another's "treasure"!

This event is very different from the usual "carp" tournament. It is a total "length", and not "weight" event. Anglers can use whatever fishing method, hook bait, style, they desire, but the carp much be caught on rod & reel, measured and released "alive" for them to count. I believe that TLO will have their "TLO Girls" going around measuring the captures! There may be some local media attention.

I'll be paying my $ and casting out my lines, the same as everyone else that enters, likely partnered up with one of the CarpQuest regulars for "Team CarpQuest". We will probably see a few "euro" style anglers, fly fishermen, spin casting, hook & worm, hook and sweet corn, bobbers on the surface - i reckon everything will be cast out there for carpy goodness and that $1k Prize!

I am waiting to find out the exact rules, baiting limitations etc. Colorado is a no chumming, no spodding, bait spoons, bait boats, catapults, pre-baiting, state. All bait must be attached to the line when cast out. Packbait *may* be acceptable, PVA bags/mesh, more than likely not. We shall have to wait and see. I will certainly share what I can find out as I receive more information. I am also waiting for the registration link to appear on the TLO site.

    Tight-Lines,

    John

  10. Slightly off-topc: I will be starting to fish with zigs this coming spring season with CarpQuest. I have never used them before. I hope to go over the equipment I acquired for zig fishing, the setup, the theory, and those first few casts (likely nightmare tangles), frustration, and finally some nice carpy captures - at least, that's the master plan ! I wanted to help others learn to not be afraid to try something new, get out there, give zigs a serious try and get some success ! Streeker, i'm sure if you stick at the zigs, then the bigger fish will come!
