  1. In this weeks new episode of CarpQuest, Andrew Holt and I host an impromptu Carp Anglers Group - Colorado fish-in at Andrew's local lake, the Fairgrounds in Adams County. Though we are the only 2 full CAG members here in Colorado, we fly the flag and do our best to promote catch & release carp fishing to the local masses, spreading the word.

The fish-in proved to be remarkable, with almost 20 carp banked between the two of us, including a couple of nice twenties and four carp pushing 18 lb's. Hopefully this video demonstrates that carp truly are the "Worlds Greatest Sportsfish" and that we have some amazing mile-high carping available here in Colorado. We certainly do have some beautiful wild specimens here in our state.

If you are ever interested in getting in a session here in our State, just drop us note and hopefully help to get you onto some fish.

    Tight-Lines,

    John

  2. Though it may feel like winter, the carp gods giveth with some sunny footage of a couple of sessions, filmed this fall, with my next door neighbor, Roland.

He is always fun to be out on the bank with and really doesn't care if he catches a fish or not. It's all about the company, the conversation, a couple
of German beers and being outdoors in beautiful Colorado!

    "Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
    Der Gemütlichkeit
    Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
    Der Gemütlichkeit."

    Hope you enjoy!

  3. In this weeks episode of CarpQuest, Ron and I are again fishing at Chatfield Reservoir, Kingfisher. We tried a new location at the venue, but after a morning without any signs of carp, we moved back to the usual spot.

Ron banked a couple of nice commons and a big crayfish. I finally manage to land one, at the end of session, to avoid the blank. The crayfish at Kingfisher have been insane in numbers this year, and size - a likely boost in their population due to the flooding experienced here earlier in the year.

    Hope you Enjoy!

  4. Each year CAG members step up and volunteer their time to Take a Kid Carping. This is a great event and one that I am very passionate about. A few years ago I was fortunate to be able to take a work colleague, Patrick, and his son Dante carp fishing. Last year it was Casey, Brittany and their young son Brayden. This year it was the turn of Lance and Colin.

Filmed during sunny mid-September, I took Lance and his young son Colin out carping for a session at Kingfisher, Chatfield Reservoir. Lance had taken his son, an avid CarpQuest fan, out a few times previously in search of carp - yet the fish were proving to be elusive. He had written to me earlier this year and asked if I could help. I receive a LOT of requests to take people fishing each year, but this one was stood out. Colin's dad had tried, and tried, to help his son bank a carp already at a few venues I knew held some good fish.

Once I got them setup, Colin turned out to be a highly passionate and talented young angler, who soon had his first ever carp on the bank, a 11 lb 4 oz common. His dad, Lance, also joined in the fun and landed his first carp, a scrappy 12 lb 2 oz common. I also managed to land a mirror and a couple of commons. A GREAT days fishing was had by all !

Colin was involved in all aspects of the captures, from baiting his hair-rig, casting out, setting up the alarms, playing the fish in, netting the fish, carp care and handling, weighing and measuring the fish. He even got involved with filming some of the footage in this video - what a great young man !

The video highlights the importance of involving anglers at an early age in the sport, not only learning the correct techniques but also appropriate fish care and handling for the species.

I would highly recommend taking the time out of your busy schedule to Take a Kid carping with you.

For me, this session with Lance and Colin ranks as one of my favorite for the year; not for the fish we caught but for the passion and enthusiasm of such a young angler for his fishing.

    Tight-Lines, hope you enjoy !

  5. war eagle! Lol I'm only one in fam who is auburn rest Alabama fans

Oh dear, you have my sympathy this year - it's been a brutal one for ya. I made the mistake of asking my wife the other week, "Why are you even watching the game? - If it hurts, stop doing it ?" .... that Saturday ended very badly for me !

  6. I would like to have some CAG cards, my card, and some CAG brochures to reinforce the idea of carp as a great sport fish. Who do I contact for these? I have a few but not enough for next year's classes.

You could always contact the State Chair for TN (I think that's where you are) to see if they have some you could have - though I don't actually see a State Chair for TN listed. Hmmm, this could be an opportunity for you to step up, and fly the CAG banner in your state ! All it takes it for one person to stand up, help and educate others, and you will find the number of anglers locally, with a positive attitude towards carp, increases over time.

You could also drop the BOD a note and request the items you need, I am pretty sure they would send you some...

  7. Thanks Jerome ! I really hope to be able to do this again in 2016 ... hey, it' only takes time....... and for people that don't find communication or education via. forums the way forwards, that one-on-one interaction with them helps tremendously. You can share so much in but a few hours with a new angler. Helps if you can help them catch a fish as well, which is often NOT so easy. I *try* do host trips a year for new Colorado carp anglers, the FXR WinterGiveAway, the CAG/TAKC (the one I perhaps enjoy the most) and the CAG/CarpQuest Colorado Challenge Winner's trip. One of these days, if/when we can get more (>1) members locally, I hope to host a few official CAG fish-in's - though at present, could be said I have a 100% attendance rate of local CAG members for trips, e.g. myself +1 on multiple trips throughout during the year!

    Tight-lines,

    John

  8. Over the past 4 years, I have worked hard to promote carp fishing here locally in Colorado. The most challenging vs. attitudes, yet positive and productive efforts, have been through the most popular local fishing forum, FishExplorer.COM. The Carp Anglers Group had a presence, though quiet voice, on FXR even before I became the State Chair.

I wanted to note my thanks to the owners and moderators of that forum for having the vision, wisdom and "balls" for their of support catch & release carp fishing in our state, especially given the initial hailstorm of negativism I received with my first carp posts. Wind the clock forwards some 4 years now, after hundreds of posts, articles, shared videos, we have a thriving and passionate group of anglers in Colorado that enjoy the sport. Hopefully in the future we will see a few more join CAG's ranks as members.

As a thanks to it's members each year, FXR hosts a Winter GiveAway, where popular/notable local anglers from the media, vendors and local outfitters, give back something back to the membership for FREE, be that tackle items or a free "guided" trip for a particular species. It's a VERY popular event and is run on the basis of all individual members having a "point" they can spend each day throughout December, to vote on a particular trip, or prize, they would love to receive. Each prize goes to the member whom submitted the most "points" for it during the month. It's a secret ballot/vote with the winners announced early in January.

I was asked back in 2013 if I would offer up a carp fishing trip with CarpQuest - I readily agreed, honestly not really expecting many people to "vote" for carp fishing as a prize. I was wrong, and a number of anglers submitted their "daily" votes in a feeding frenzy for a day out with CarpQuest. The 2013 GiveAway was won by Ron Altman, who I took out in 2014. He later joined CAG after succumbing to the carp fishing addiction - we have become very good friends and the dynamic duo of carping in Colorado throughout this year.

Again, towards the end of 2014, I was asked if I would host a day's fishing with CarpQuest, as a Winter GiveAway prize. Hell yes, I quickly agreed.

This time the winner was a popular, and very well known local walleye fisherman, James, nicknamed, "MileHighNightStalker". The challenge for me was that James usually only fished at night, thus he requested a "night session with CarpQuest" as his prize. Given the miserable and chaotic weather this year in Colorado, we finally got around to scheduling his trip in September.

It turned out to be a great evening spent with him, talking about carp, walleye and how we both got into the sport. It was a real honor to spend the night on the bank side with him. He eventually landed a couple of great carp, which also turned out to be his largest captures so far this year! He left, a VERY happy man with a new found understanding and respect for carp and carp fishing. Perhaps one day he may take up the Quest on his own and another carp angler is born.

Perhaps mine is an extreme version of promoting carp fishing locally, but it seems to work, especially the one-on-one approach. It get people out there and hopefully, a carp in their hands at the end of the day with a beaming smile upon their faces.

I highly recommend to everyone, try to take the time in 2016 to take someone new to carp fishing out with you on a session. I put together a short CarpQuest video of our adventure that evening, mainly for the winner James, which you can view here.

If I get asked again this year for my CarpQuest to be a "prize", I certainly hope to be able to get it done. Perhaps I could giving away a FREE years membership to CAG, along with the session and video production, as a prize to the winner - a real "package" for passionate future carper in Colorado ?

    Tight-Lines,

    John
