  1. Well here we go again - another episode of Carpquest, finally off the cutting room floor and released for your viewing pleasure !

In this weeks episode of CarpQuest we returned to Chatfield Reservoir, after the flooding. It was like fishing a whole new venue, the bankside was gone, our spots were under water and finding a place to cast out was a challenge.

We located a spot between the trees and got fishing. There were many submerged snags, we lost a a couple of good fish to their clutches, including one absolute monster of a common.

Amidst the rain storms, recreational chaotic bank side activity, we managed to eventually land 5 carp, including a great new PB for Ron.

Well done Ron ! He was a VERY happy man !

    Hope you enjoy the episode.

    Tight-Lines,

    John

  2. In this weeks episode of CarpQuest, we returned again to Adams County Fairgrounds, following the months of torrential rain and flooding. Though our swim was flooded and under water, we got setup further back on the peninsula and got our lines out. The session was not without difficultly, I lost the legs to my rod pod, broke a chair, poured coffee all over myself, and to end the day, broken the replacement chair Ron had brought me ! Arg !

    Hope you enjoy !

    Tight-Lines,

    John

  3. Well it has been way too long, work, other life dramas got me way behind on the video's.

So, in honor of this weekends upcoming Carp Tournament in Colorado, "Don't Bash the Trash", I have released the next episode of CarpQuest filmed in May this year.

    Season 3, Episode 5.

In this episode of CarpQuest we finally got back to the Fairgrounds, after a week of crazy weather and flooding. The windy session looked to be ending in a blank until a stunning 20 lb common took the bait, literally as I was lifting the rods from the water for the day!

Remember, it's never over, until that last line is taken out from the water!

    Hope you enjoy !

    Tight-Lines,

    John

  4. I know quite a few anglers here in CO that use circle hooks, for their carp & cat fishing - they are as passionate an advocate for them as others are for more specialist carp hooks - they seem to catch just as many fish. If you have been doing it that way for years, and have a good ratio of hook ups to landed fish, who can say you're doing it wrong... :swimminfish:

Tight-Lines and look forwards to seeing some pics of your carpy captures!

  5. Skeet, it's a step in the right direction. Though I am usually a fan of the more social side of fishing, family, fun, friends, I have to admit that it took an outfitter, with some $ and weight with the local authorities to get this type of event going and a permit. I know last year, they did not get a permit, this year, with the popularity of carp fishing in Colorado growing, they were able to get it done. Irony, there is a bow fishing tournament the very same day, down south in Colorado (I think at 11-Mile Reservoir).

  6. TightLine Outdoor's, "Don't Bash the Trash" Carp Fishing tournament is a GO for Saturday, July 18th at Lake Arbor in Colorado.

It should be noted that this took some tremendous effort from TLO to even get a permit for the event - previous Colorado carp $$$ payout tournaments have been catch & kill only in the name of conservation, or removal of undesired species etc - so FINS-UP to TLO and to the local authorities for making this happen.

This is a CATCH & RELEASE carp fishing tournament, the first of it's kind in our State. It is a $50 entry fee per angler with a $1000 cash payout, I think there may be other additional prizes, equipment etc. It was noted there is "FREE COFFEE" and lunch provided - so heck, i'd show up just for the coffee!

I do admit, I am pretty excited about taking part, fishing alongside some very enthusiastic and passionate Colorado carp anglers, drinking a shed-load of coffee and having some fun - hopefully I may even catch a carp or two - which given my recent dry spell, would be great. I usually don't fish tournaments - so this will be a first for me as well !

For details of the event, registration details and event specific rules can be found on the TLO website. If you have any questions about the event, you should direct these to TLO. www.tightlineoutdoors.com

I will be there and hopefully can spread the CAG word to those that take part.

    Tight-Lines,

    John

  7. With my Mad Dragon's, 3.5tc, I can hit about 100-110 yards max (i have measured it before), with 2oz leads, 15-17 lb trilene big game mono XT, a Daiwa Sealine Black 4500 reel. Any more than that, and without a shock leader, snap-offs for sure. Alas, my casting is pretty inaccurate though at that range, it goes in the right "general" direction, +/- 30 feet left/right. With some packbait on there, pva bags/mesh, i'm probably down to 70-80 yards max and have snapped off a few times trying to get further without a shock-leader.

It took a lot of time, patience, and practice to get that far, initially when I *thought* i was casting about a hundred yards, it was only 80 or so - humbling to say the least. I also shot a bit of video a few times, of my casting, to see what I was doing wrong, my typical flaws were, off balance, not transferring weight forwards on cast, bent arms on cast, not using the butt hand to whip the rod into my chest and the other to "steady" etc, looping the cast, rather than casting it in a straight overhead, having too short a length out from the rod-tip to the weight, the list goes on.

Very rarely do I need to fish at that range, most of my captures come from 10 yards - 60/70 yards out off the bank. There is one spot i'd love to be able to cast to, it's about a 135 yard chuck, one day, I shall get there - though I suspect I will need a bit more training and practice first - and likely, an upgrade in equipment!

  8. +1 for Cygnet Sniper Weigh Tripod - have used since last season, solid as a rock, no complaints !

I have also used the NGT Carp Cradle (304) - which works great, is pretty light weight and quick and easy to setup/break down after a session. I needed to find something a little lighter, and more portable, for short hike sessions rather than haul my old Nash Monster Carp Cradle deluxe.

  9. This is a great event that is right on my doorstep.

Alas, the $500 "donation" just to participate, is a wee bit too steep for this carp angler - even though it is to a very worthy cause ! Amateur entrants are also encouraged to raise funds in addition to their entry fee. For example, last years (2014) fund raiser champion raised an additional $7500 in addition to his entry fee. Second place raised an additional $4650.

I do know a few of the "Pro" fly carpers that take part each year and both they, and their "amateur" partner, have a great time!

As Dave already mentioned, some of the best fly carp anglers in the nation take part in this event as the "pro's".

Remember, this is a charity event, no $ prizes to the competitors, with ALL proceeds going towards the reconstruction / rehabilitation of the Urban South Platte River below Chatfield Reservoir and through Denver. These funds are paired up with a Fishing is Fun grant from the local wildlife authorities.

A few of the sponsors do donate prizes for the top fundraisers, biggest fish, "winners" etc.

There is a social event/dinner after the event you can also purchase tickets for to attend.

  10. I have released a very Special Episode of CarpQuest.

Why so special, i've released over 50 videos these past few years? taken many new anglers fishing.

Well, this time it's personal. I got to take my brother Peter fishing at the Fairgrounds. He had never fished before in his life.

Could I help my own brother, catch his first ever fish, a carp ? The pressure was really on. Peter had produced the titles for the CarpQuest videos and has been an enthusiastic supporter of all my endeavors over the years.

I hope you enjoy this episode as much as Peter and I, who got to spend a very special day together on the bank.

    Tight-Lines,

    John
