  1. If I can make some constructive critisism , please do the fish a favor and do away with the boga grip . Boga grips are made to handle toothy critters and are not nessary for carp , they damage the fish with no real benefits, to you the angler or the carp .

    Nice catch tho , B)

I was wondering about that myself. Any of these fish grippers appear to be harmful to delicate mouthed fish such as carp. I'm not saying they would cause the carp to die but they're certainly not doing them any good. JMHO :)

  2. That's wild, great, action packed video. A few years ago I would have wanted to do that but now with my old age I prefer them weighing around 5 to 10 pounds. Much bigger than that would wear me out way before they were ready for the net.

  3. CarpHead,

Have you tried much yet? If you are an experienced carper with other methods it shouldnt be too bad, you probably already have a better understanding of carp behavior than some of us coming at it from fly fishing for other species.

My problem is I have never seen carp tailing or feeding anyway except bread on the surface. I'm 71 years old and have been fishing for many species, including carp, since I was 14 years old. I live in Northern California on Clear Lake but lived many years in the San Francisco Bay Area. I know I could catch them with a bread fly after feeding the ducks but they're making it illegal to feed ducks just about everywhere in N. Ca. now. I guess I could do a bit of illegal chumming and then fish blind over the area but I've heard this is a rough road to take.

My fly fishing skills are not great but I used to be able to get a shad fly out to 80 feet or so with a 30 foot shooting head and 20 lb mono for shooting line. I can only guess the weight rods and line we used in those days as they used a letter system to rate them. I'm going to guess I was using a 9 or 10 weight rig most of the time but I had a larger rod that was probably a 12 weight for catching stripers. I never used a full length fly line then, only 30 foot shooting heads from Scientific Anglers.

I bought a little 8 foot 6/7 weight rod with a 6 wt floating line and started playing around but haven't had any success yet. I guess I'd have to take a long drive to the Columbia River for a chance at success but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.

Keep on catching those bronze battlers..

  4. Wow! Great article. I had totally given up on ever catching a carp on a fly here in Northern California as I have never seen carp tailing or feeding in any way other than surface but it's tough to try and catch a carp with a bread fly before first hooking a duck. I have seen what I think were "mud blooms" so maybe there's hope yet. Thanks a bunch for posting the article.clap.gif

  5. There's probably a fair chance that the fish could have lived after being weighed but at least you know for sure the fish was alive when you released it. Seems worth the loss of $75 bucks just for the peace of mind. Too bad everyone doesn't think like you. Well done!!!

  6. Don't know how you guys do it ! Around here the carp aren't as big but are super hard to catch I'm good caster and i'm lucky if I can catch one a day and they don't chase the fly at all you almost have to put in their mouth for them take it :bonk:

At least you have a chance at them with a fly. I have never seen any feeding carp anywhere in Northern California except for surface feeding induced by feeding bread to ducks. If I were to try for the surface feeders, I would be way more likely to catch a duck unless I'm really fast at jerking the fly away from them.

Most waters in this area have no more than 4 or 5 feet visibility and usually less. We see a lot of bubbles that indicate carp feeding on the bottom but we can't see the carp so there's no way to sight fish for them. I assume you folks catch all your fish by sight fishing since I'm pretty sure a carp would spit out a fly before we knew we were being bit. I would love to catch just one carp on a fly before I die but I don't see it happeninmg in this area. I have caught many carp into the low 20's with 6 weight fly gear baited with corn and it's a great thrill fighting them on the fly tackle. Sorry for rambling on, I'm getting quite senile these days.~8
