There are alot of 50's and a couple 60's in a state owned lake here in southwest VA and I only know of less than a handful of pepole fish for them I am getting these number's from the va department of game and inland fisheries site I have fished there and I have to say its the cleanest and clearest lake I have ever fished you can see the bottom at 20ft and the lake is well over 1400 acers and it averages a depth of 28ft and drops off to 128ft in places so god only knows what is sucking on the bottom but I do know that the new state record is. Back on topic that is a real Gigantica Mirror 92lbs thats amazing yeah the only way we will see a carp like that in my opinion will be from a private body of water were someone feeds them on a day to day basis I love seeing stories like these I wonder if they got it on film
-
I might try some green lipped mussel boilies or crayfish next spring
-
Thank you
-
Yeah there are 5 small springs that feed into this lake and they are loaded with crayfish.

Man thank you so much you cant see it on film the big one had a orange belly first one I ever caught that way it was almost neon orange pretty cool thanks man

CARP FISHING OXBOW LAKE ST. PAUL VIRGINIA

I am using a 6-8'' hooklink with korda kaptor kurv shank #6-84-6inch max
-
I am using korda kaptor kurv shank mainly I have used every hook korda makes in #6-8As far as hooks go I have had very good success on wacker curve shanks.
-
I am using about a 8'' hooklink korda soft-n-trap and korda kaptor kurv shank and wide gape #8Hands down without a doubt these are the best big carp hooks I have ever used , I seldom get hook pulls with these and almost a 90% hook up ratio. http://www.bigcarpta...&cat=377&page=2

I have about1-3mm gap from hook bend to bait I tie it on starting on the off side of the weld then I loop it down 7xs then I loop up the shank 1 full turn and pull it thru on the same side I started on then I pin it all in place with a bit of tubing I am going to try a shorter hair and see how that works out for me thank you
-
I most certinly will the shorter the hooklink the more money I save lol I will give it a goI mostly use 4" to 8" hook lengths; you might try that.

I never use anything bigger than 15ml I have a theroy I look at it like trying to through a basketball threw 2 different holes the ball is going to have more trouble going threw the smaller hole than the bigger one with my hooks turning so fast I dont think they are catching inside I think they are catching on the outer edge just a thought"infinity's with 2lb tc with 12lb subline"....NICE !!! Yea for Winter I step down to lighter Test Curves in cold water since I rarely fish method feeders or heavy weights . I used to use 2.25 and 2.50TC 12'ers , but the smaller swims I fish in Winter , the short 9' stalkers in 2.25 up to 3.00TC work very well for me.
Give it a go, I bet you will see results very fast. Anytime you start to have hook pulls , check your hook to make sure its super sharp and that the point is not bent , sharpen as needed with a small sharpening stone...if that end is good , retie a few rigs with shorter hooklinks and smaller hooks and scale down the bait in cold water . If its warm water , sometimes going with a bigger hook and longer hooklink is best, specially if using larger hookbaits like 18mm + boilies.
Good luck.

I agree with you I think were my hooks are turnig so fast, The smaller fish have smaller mouths so ther isnt that much room for them to spit it out quick enough as with the larger fish there mouths are bigger I look at it like throwing a basket ball threw 2 different holes the smaller the hole the more trouble the ball is going to have finding a way threwMaybe, I just think with the water getting colder each day , those fish are just not feeding hard and sometimes they just mouth the bait instead of suck it in all the way to "taste" it...the reason the scream off is because the hook has pricked them and they sensed danger and bolted (the mechanics behind that rig) , problem is the hook did not go in far enough and when it stuck in , there was not enough meat to keep a good hold.
I would certainly try a shorter link and smaller hook. Those smaller fish seem to stay a bit more active as their smaller body weights tend to warm up faster in the mid-day sun than the larger fish . the bigger fish seem to really slow down their movements and feeding and dont warm up and get as active , maybe because with the more weight , the more warmth it takes to really get their body temps up enough to feed more aggressive ? Heck I dont know, just going on personal Winter fishing experience.....going on my 10th year of fishing year round for carp.
-
I keep a loose drag I have never had this problem til I fished this water I think the bait is not going in deep enought cause my hooks turn fast so the bigger the mouth the larger the area as with the smaller mouth not as much area so eaiser for the hook to prick a smaller mouthI agree Bob, in warmer months if I have a hook pull its due to either dull hook or operator error with heavy gear (13' 3.50TC and a tight clutch).
-
I dont horse them in I play them very cautiously in witer for the fact that they dont feed as they do in warmer weather I have infinity's with 2lb tc with 12lb subline I only use a coated hooklink never use braid to hard to pin downHook pulls can also be caused too heavy/stiff rod...especially when in close to the bank....braided fishing line also compounds the problem as there is no give. Attempting to bring a big fish in tooo fast (horsing) also causes hook pulls.
-
What if I use korda super natural with a #8 wide gape or a fluro hookink
-
And I know they are getting hooked good I get some screaming runs I dont try and powere them in I let them wear themselfs out I have never had this problem before
-
how long are you using or should I say how shortShorter hooklinks had made a world of a difference to me
-
I am using sweet corn no more than two pieces at a time mid 30's it doesnt make sense I set the hook and play the fish for a few seconds and the line just falls slack and I have my drag set right this has happend with the koteinental korda hook as well I figured if I shortend the hooklink the would get pricked soonerHow big do you think the carp you are losing are? If they are less than 30 lbs, then you can shorten your hooklink a few inches. If they are 30-50 lbs, then personally I wouldn't shorten it. Actually, on second thought, it also depends on how big your bait is. If it's just a couple kernals of maize, then you can probably shorten it.
-
I am fishing a hard bottom I am using a 3oz korda square pear on a running rig and on lead clip with same resultsHow large of a lead are you using as well? I noitced when I am going after larger fish that sometimes a larger lead helps the hookset a lot more.
-
These are wide gape they have a curve shank so the hook cathes hold as soon as there is pressure on the hookIt may be that the design of the hook is not giving you enough of a bite , if that is the right term. A hook with a wider gape may be the answer.

On a recent outing I noticed that I was catching smaller fish with ease but eveytime I hooked a larger carp they would come off I am using about a 12'' hooklink and #6 korda kaptor kurv shank do you think maybe the hook is to small or I should shorten my hooklink I have my hair long enough for the bait to barely touch the bend of the hook I am using corn for bait
THANK YOU
