  1. Daniel,

Ashima hooks are tried and tested. Personally I stick to 3 patterns for most of my fishing. The Longshank hooks (C900) are my favorite pattern and I use them with a blow-back rig (with micro ring). They are strong enough to fish in weed but in really snaggy conditions I favor the heavier patterns (Goliath and Heavy Carp). They've not let me down yet and I rarely get hook pulls. The looped leaders and snag leader (revenge) are other products I would highly recommend if you are fishing weedy or snaggy waters.

  2. New video footage of a few short sessions on the River. Managed a few nice commons in difficult conditions with the river in flood and running very high with all of the snow melt coming from the mountains.

Spring is finally here and I am looking forward to getting out onto some of my favorite waters in the near future.

  4. I've been pretty happy with my recent articles (International Carper and NACA) and am very glad I got involved with BC Tackle as it has allowed me to get back into writing, which I really do love.

Having caught some awesome fish in the last few years I am always keen to promote the wonderful fishing we have available to us in America and I recently got the chance to do this on a new up and coming European website that has some excellent content. If anyones interested the website is:

  5. From multiples experiences I no longer equate jumping/leaping carp with feeding behavior! It does tell you where they are, but in my opinion this is not a feeding behavior. You may catch fish, but if the fish are head and shouldering or rolling then odds are you'll catch many. many more. Frustrating to watch them, I know!!

  6. We had some great entree's this month and as the weather warms up we are expecting the competition to become much more competitive!

Congratulations to this months winner Marcin and his fantastic 39lb+ Chicago River Record

  8. With the official start of spring starting tomorrow (March 20th) I decided to get out for 4 hours to see if I could finish the winter on style.

It was a tricky session with the weather dropping to low 30's and the fish were just not active. However, I kept on working the area and changed over a few things to see if I could trigger a few takes. After landing a few smaller fish I decided to use a 10mm Fluro Robin Red boilie to top my snowman rig. I have hammered these fish on fluro's the last few years and they are very wary of yellow and white but this is a new color and a little less blatant!

It worked and I ended the session with 11 fish and landed a couple of low doubles that definitely made the session worthwhile. Here's a short little video as I didn't take any pictures.

  9. great vid is there a pool with slower moving water that you cast to?

the way the river is flowing seems like all the method will just go down stream

The area I am fishing is just off a fast bend of the river and forms a big pool (more like a back eddy). If you fish it from the other side it's a nightmare to hold bottom and keep baits in position, but if you take the trouble to walk around to the other side, you can hold bottom with 1oz of lead. With it being a back eddy any bait you put it usually ends up in roughly the same area, you just have to work out where that area is on the day, dependent on the flow of the river.

  10. With the rivers in flood at the moment, here's a session from last week when the river was fishable. Interesting session as I lost my net, landed a hybrid and finished with a nice scaley low double, the best of around a dozen fish. This is what winter fishing is about to me; braving the elements and getting lots of bites, all be it with smaller fish. Having said that, I CANNOT wait until the spring really starts!

  11. After 'losing' my 42 inch Landing Net to the river yesterday I decided to get creative.

Firstly, I got my old pan net out of storage and made a slight repair.

Secondly, I had an old 42" mesh so with a $5 investment in some PVC piping I fashioned a 36 inch net. Still have a few upgrades to do on it, such as add another larger handle (to fit over the smaller one, telescopically) and add some camo duct tape. Also want to reinforce the handle with an insert so it doesn't flex. A wooden dowel might be good as it will also float so I don't lose it!!

These should do me until the ice melts and then I'll need to spend some money :(

  12. Well done Brian. I bet the fish were close to shore the day before due to the wind. On big bodies of water the wind can have a big effect and you won't go far wrong fishing into the teeth of it. It might not be very pleasant, but who cares when you are catching fish! Hope to see more pics and reports over the coming weeks

  13. With a storm system dropping over 2 feet of snow on Friday I couldn't resist getting out for a few hours to try for what I hope will be the last snow carp of the winter! It was a balmy 58 degrees in Massachusetts yesterday and today it got up to the mid 40's so I decided a morning on the Blackstone River would be better than sitting at home watching soccer!

I had baited up with a 1/2 kilo of boilies 3 days ago, at the end of my last session and it was immediately obvious the fish were eating them as the only pick-ups I could get were on boilies as opposed to the fake maize I was catching on previously. Lots of action with a dozen fish landed and this scraper double made up for a lost landing net! I had the net balanced and a gust of wind blew it into the margins when I was turned the other way tying a rig. I didn't even see where it went and although I cast around repeatedly in was nowhere to be found. Oh well, at least I have an excuse to go back this week to see if I can retrieve it!
