Just a few pics from the Red River CAG Fish-In at Hominy, Oklahoma. A beautiful little lake and beautiful scenery.
Before I forget it, a big thanks to David Moore from Big Carp Tackle for not only hosting the event but pre-baiting beforehand. And to Joshua's wife Melanie for making the Pizza run into town TWICE because we're pigs!
We have a picture of Joshua demonstrating the latest Euro-style rod grip. Felt sorry for him though. Saturday morning he was sitting with Neil and I about 20 yards from his pod, which was just around the corner and over a small rise from ours. All the sudden he jumps up running because he had a screaming run. Following him over the rise, I get there just in time to see him stripping his shirt off, and in the lake he dives. I look out and sure enough, his rod is tearing off across the lake being pulled by what could only have been a huge fully-scaled linear leather mirror koi. Funny thing about his Black Phantom rods. They float! Having swam about 50 feet, he decides he's not winning this race before hypothermia sets in, so he swims back. Out in the middle of the lake his rod is still leaving a wake. About two-thirds of the way across, it stops and just starts to drift around with the wind. David got out a spare rod and almost succeeded in snagging it. That boy can cast, as the rod was almost 100 yards out. But he finally gave up as the wind made the rod drift til it pointed directly at us, impossible to snag. About 4 or 5 hours later, the rod was still there, which led me to believe the line and/or fish was snagged and couldn't go anywhere. About that time we manage to flag down someone in a boat, who is happy to take Joshua out to his rod. Sure enough, the fish is still on! After it getting free and snagged again, the line finally broke. But at least he had his rod back.
We also see Neil's "Insectopod", his new 150# behemoth pod made from 1/8" plate steel. Very tarty though. Gloss black with purple accents. Also sporting the
Flazjar,Faljar,Flaseree,Falgar... Those new SOLAR-POWERED bite alarms with the impossible-to-pronounce name.We also have Dave landing his 15.8# mirror and Neil hogging the spotlight. Neil's hoping the ability to catch a mirror will rub off on him.
And I can't close this post without at least a couple of rod pod pics. Can't wait to do it again. Only next time maybe a little closer to the Red River! That 6 hour drive sucks.

Picture? Always love seeing those mirrors, even if not on the end of my line.
-
We call it the "Insectopod". Looks like some big-ass insect. Weighs a ton. Laser-cut out of plate steel. Should be EXTREMELY stable.

There's a Lake Hominy, a Lower Lake Hominy and a larger Municipal Lake just outside the Hominy city limits. Which one? I'm assuming the larger Municipal Lake?
-
Dave, is the lake on the Osage Indian Reservation? If so, any special permits or rules? Number of rods, chumming, etc.? I know some of the reservations have some weird rules.
-
Seeing as how Neil doesn't have to buy a non-resident fishing license for Oklahoma and I do, my rods might just end up in the lake overnight (actually my bait, hopefully not my rods, unless I catch a koi before Neil does). I'll gladly wake up for a fish!

That's why we use MY net. Of course, I did lose a nice fish of his at the net a couple of weeks ago. He still swears it was a 40# fully-scaled linear leather mirror ghostie koi.
-
It would make my weekend if he'd just net my koi and mirror.

I remember an old article in one of the NACAs about a mirror caught so often during a single session they nicknamed it "Mug" because it like to have it's picture taken!

I'll pick up plates, napkins, silverware...

Anyone catch tilapia out of there. I'm a tilapia eating machine lol.
How far from warm water discharge will we be
We'll be on the opposite side of the lake. It's the only public access area on the lake. But really nice bank access. No trees to get in the way of casting. You can literally drive to the water. But no restrooms. That's why Joe's been working on a porta-potty.
-
Up to everyone else. We can grill between breaks in the rain, or do it earlier in the day. Supposedly it's not supposed to rain until late afternoon or evening. And if you buy meat, I'll help out with a little cash.
-
We can bring grills and charcoal. What else are we needing? Some things someone can run into Waco for if need be. I'll watch their rods... ;-)

Daniel. never thought of that,,,,let's see...if I buy all the team slots, that will run me about 4 grand,,,,,, HMMMMM??????? it sure would guarantee a trophy
Do you still win if you buy all 25 slots and still don't catch a fish?

For some reason Neil's balking at me chaining a grill on the hood of his truck. Some dribble about not being able to see and scratching the paint...
-
Have fished the ATC three times (6 days fishing) and still haven't drawn a peg north of the I-35 bridge. Still not sure if the lake really goes north of there... Maybe just an urban legend. I have basically been able to stand at any one peg I've fished and seen all 5 other spots from there. Luck of the draw...
-
Neil and I have no room in our truck for a grill, but if someone were to bring one, we'd gladly pitch in whatever is needed...
-
Did someone mention something about grilling? I'd be willing to pitch in some money on food, propane, charcoal, whatever.

Try a Spomb. It dumps on impact, faster than a regular spod, and when retrieved quickly, literally "glides" across the top of the water.
Dave at Big Carp can set you up with one:

Corn Puffs

The puff will get soggy, but it'll stay on the hook as long as it isn't disturbed. If you pull in your rig after an hour or two, there probably wont' be a puff on it, but it most likely came off when you retrieved it. I've caught lots of fish on puffs that I swore were long gone.
