  1. I fondly remember years ago when we never prebaited. We went to the river and used canned sweet corn or a jello/shredded wheat dough ball directly on the hook and caught decent numbers. Just get out there and have fun. :party0012icon:

  2. Cheap hooks will cause you heartache. Don't skimp when it comes to hooks. Nothing worse than getting a good run and straightening or breaking a hook. I use Owner hooks for pack & puff work, and Wacker Curve Shanks or Fox S4 XS Kuro's for everything else. Hooks need to be sharp and strong.

  3. I don't know how long a period of time you're looking for, but here's my packbait recipe I posted before...

    42 oz Steam Rolled oats

    1 can Cream Style Corn

1/2 cup of Spring/river/lake water (not chlorinated tap water)

2 TBSP Flavoring (usually R&W or One On!)

    2 TBSP Wacker Compulsion

1 TBSP Sea/Kosher Salt (not iodized table salt)

1 TBSP Wacker AAMaize (usually Natural Corn flavor, but sometimes French Vanilla)

Put oats in a bucket or huge bowl, add half the can of cream style corn, add flavoring,Compulsion, salt, and AAMaize to the remaining half can of cream style corn and stir well. Add this to the oats and mix well. Add 1/2 cup of water to the empty can and swirl around or stir to get all the flavor/corn pieces etc mixed in, and add to the oats. Mix well. Put lid on bucket or transfer to a gallon ziploc bag. Wet your hands and pack around pickup/lifter or lead. I know this strays from conventional pack bait recipes, but it works for me.

I use the second type of lead you linked too and that recipe holds on them just fine.

  4. If you plan to use different hookbaits, then a little of each of what you plan to use as a hookbait can go into your spod mix. Maize, corn, chopped up boilies and tigers would work. When I spod (spomb actually) I use a dry mix of chicken feed, sweet feed, calf manna, and a little rock salt (water softener grade not ice melting stuff).

As for using pack while spoding, it kinda defeats the purpose IMO. I'm an either or kinda guy.

  5. OWNER SSW BAIT HOOKS SZ 1 (51 PCS) 5311-101 or Owner SSW Bait Hook SZ 1/0 (46 PCS) 5311-111

are what I use for puff fishing and I believe what mc is referring to.

For puff fishing I never ever set the hook. They always scream off with it and I just reel tight and hold on. They are most likely already hooked when they swim off and if not, reeling the line tight as they run will hook them tight without the chance of pulling a hook from tearing their mouth. Different strokes for different folks I reckon.

  6. I make it into one chunk at home, by that I mean one big piece. I use spring water either from a tap if you have spring water or from a bottle of spring water. I make the doughball entirely at home but a little on the dry side, then I break off a piece to make the ball, add a little river / lake water to make it the right consistency, then mold it around the hook/bead. I hope this clarifies it, because I'm running out of ways to explain it. :P

  7. Yes a standard sliding sinker/running rig is fine. Same basic rig as a paylake rig, but smaller hair rigged hook. Make sure the #6 hook you are using is strong enough. I know from experience a 20+ will straighten a #6 Mustad sproat hook. If it's a strong hook, there's no need to go bigger than a #6. I always make my doughball as a chunk ahead of time and use river/lake water to make it the perfect consistency as I make each doughball as I need it. I make it a little on the dry side at home using spring water, not city water.

  8. Do not use a treble hook. A single hook is plenty.

You can cover the hook with the doughball. That's how it was done for years and years and caught thousnads of fish. It would be better to tie a hair rig and tie on 6mm or bigger bead and mold the dough around the bead. That leaves the hook exposed, giving you a better chance of hooking up. If you want to try that look at youtube for hair rig tying videos. Just use whatever line you have, you don't need expensive coated braid. Experiment a bit and see how it goes. Peanut Butter Oat doughballs do rock!!

  9. Well, I wasn't going to brag, but if no one else will talk about the fish caught, ..... Here goes.

Mmmmm, seems the number of runs matched the number of fish caught.

Any other requests about the 2013 Spring DC Fish in?

So no one caught anything or got any runs? I know a fish in is about the people not the fish, aren't there some pics of you guys relaxing and having a meal or something?
