  1. Looks good. Maybe your next purchase will be another bank stick, another buzz bar and 2 rod butt holders. That way your rods can sit horizontal and it will keep your rod butts off the ground.

  2. Field & Stream's April 2013 issue has a troubling blurb regarding carp. The headline is called "Snitchin' Fish"...

Minnesota researchers are radio-tagging common carp and turning them loose in lakes. The tagged carp seek out their comrades, allowing researchers to net the whole school. Hopefully the "Judas Fish" tactic can be utilized on Asian carp.

They say that is why they are doing it, but I bet if it works other states will use it to round up and slaughter "evasive" common carp.

  3. Countdown until someone gets on their soapbox and begins a diatribe about how you never need PVA if you use paylaker techniques, in 3,2,1

You can use sweet corn in PVA if you drain the juice off and add salt to the bare kernels and let them sit for a few hours. You can use crushed boilies, pellets of choice, any oils and dips/glugs that specify that they are PVA friendly. I hope that helps. I haven't used PVA much but that's what I know off hand.

  4. If you've spent any time fishing you know there are humorous things that happen. Please share your funny fishing stories. I'll start...

Several years ago I was wading the South Branch of the Potomac River fishing for whatever would bite really. I was using nightcrawlers most of the time and 2" plastic twister tail grubs when the mood struck me. I was using a 5' Ultra light spinning outfit, and had caught dozens of different sunfish varieties, a few Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, and a few River Chubs and Fallfish as well. I was in water past my waist but not up to my chest when I got a good strike and set the hook. It was a nice Fallfish about 14" long. It fought strongly in the current and then it made a run behind me and ran head first into my butt cheek. :o It startled me for a second, then I realized it had got the hook stuck in my shorts! The fallfish was spanking me with his tail trying to free himself. I had to wade into shallower water, turn my shorts around so I could get to the hook and remove it with a pair of forceps, and remove the hook from the fish as well. I laughed for a good while about it. I have passed this story onto many fishing buddies and they all got a good laugh about it.

  5. If you've fished any length of time, you have had a fish spit the hook, had a hook pull, lost one to a snag, had one break your line etc. I thought it would make for some interesting reading to have folks relate their "the one that got away" stories. I'll start...

Last year while fishing for carp at my swim, I lost a fish I never saw and quite honestly was only hooked up with for 10 seconds top. I was using some flavor of oatmeal doughball (can't remember the flavor for sure but it was either Scopex, Peanut Butter or Orange Cream) and it was a one tone screaming run. I picked up my rod, disengaged the baitrunner and reeled down to the fish and raised the rod. The rod tip remained at nearly the same spot from when the line tightened and the rod bent heavily. The fish ran to the right, then ran to the left and shook it's head so hard the tip of my rod quaked several times and the line went slack. I wondered if he ran me across a sharp rock and cut me off or spit the hook, hell I wondered if it was a carp at all. I reeled in to see that my hook was still there, so either it spit the hook or the hook pulled. I never gained on that fish he just pulled drag. I know it was not a submerged log floating down river, both from the head shake and the change of directions. I still wonder how big it was. I caught 4 over 20 that year and that one felt considerably bigger, but it's hard to judge in 10 seconds of fury!

  6. I was watching a fishing show on TV the other day and the host said something to the effect of if a fish is bleeding get it back in the water as soon as possible. He said that water is a natural coagulant to fish, and the longer you keep them out of water when they are bleeding the better the chance the fish will be weakened or will die.

  7. When I camp out I always break my list of things to bring into 2 lists of 4 things. A "need list" and a "want list" of the following...

    Food & Drink

    Fishing Bait & Tackle

    Comfort

    Entertainment

I just think about bare essentials for the needs and luxury for the wants. I usually end up with all the needs and a few wants added on. IMO The first 3 categories are most important. Entertainment can be as simple as a radio and a pair of binoculars. Binoculars are a must. Good for wildlife viewing and peeping on pretty ladies in bikinis riding by in canoes or tubing. jaw-dropping.gif

  8. Are you saying the Asian Carp she shot are like the common carp we fish for? If that's the case, statements like that only help bowfisherman justify what they do. Jimmy Houston and Babe Winkleman aren't that hot either but they put out some pretty good programming and have been successful, I think we should support other carpers when they try to feature carp as a sportfish instead of trolling on forums with irrelevent criticisms.

I was thinking along the same lines.

  9. Boilies will always be the best carp bait, but you have to give them some free feeds and get them seeing it as a natural food source. That approach works better than just one on the hook. Trouble is some people buy a kilo of boiles and it lasts theme all season. Once they are on the boilies the bites will come thick and fast. Also just use one boilie type and keep putting it in. No point feeding different favors then how do you know which they prefer? It can take time but its worth it.

    I beg to differ.

  10. Always good to see a youngun getting a fish on. Nice catfish! I bet he told his friends in school about it and they didn't believe him. I remember being a little feller and catching nice fish with my Dad and Grandpa. Some of the best times in my life.

  11. I like the challenge after a while it gets old fishing with the same thing.

That's understandable, but catching fish never gets old! ;) I want to make sure no one saw my post as an attack on any company. I was just stating that for example a Scopex boilie in my swim will not get a nudge while a Scopex doughball gets hammered.
